He was an outstanding scientist, Doctor of Chemical Sciences (1974), Professor (1983), member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1992) and the Social Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine (1991), laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine (1995), Honored Scientist and Engineer of Ukraine (1998), laureate of the L.A. Chugaev Prize of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1976), L.V. Pisarzhevsky Prize of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences (1983), A.I. Brodsky Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2001), awarded by the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (2004), the Gold Medal of the USSR Exhibition of National Economy Achievements (1977), the Jubilee Medal of I.I. Chernyaev (1985), the Medal “Veteran of Labor” (1987) and others. He is known to the scientific community for his research in the fields of high-temperature and heterogeneous-heterophase coordination chemistry and physico-inorganic chemistry.
S.V. Volkov is the author and co-author of more than 1440 works, including 16 monographs and 112 inventions. His life is an example of selfless service to science, a role model for young scientists. Among his students are 11 doctors of science and 29 candidates of science, some of whom still work at their native Institute, while others have found their destiny in other scientific, educational, or industrial institutions in Ukraine and the world. In the memory of his colleagues and students, he will forever remain a talented, creative person with a kind heart, bubbling energy, and a sharp mind.
