Description
Summary:The work is aimed at studying and summarizing the results of investigations of the elastic properties and plasticity characteristics of a number of commercially available cutting composites based on cBN and high-purity polycrystals produced by various methods at high pressures and temperatures. A total of 15 different types of superhard materials (SHM) based on cBN have been studied. Experimental work was based on the use of ultrasonic pulse testing methods in determining the shear moduli (G), Young (E), bulk elasticity (B), and Poisson’s ratio (h). The values of h and Vickers hardness (HV) for all the materials studied were used to evaluate the plasticity characteristics of (dH) within the framework of the concept proposed by Yu. V. Milman et al. It has been established that in the coordinates of h vs G/B the data array for the 15 studied samples corresponds well to the theoretical dependence for spatially homogeneous isotropic solids. In coordinates dH vs (1–h–2h2)×HV/E, the samples are accurately distributed along a linear dependence in which a region of relatively low plasticity (cBN polycrystals) and increased plasticity (cBN-based composite materials) stand out. Estimates of dH for SHM based on cBN are performed for the first time. The obtained data are of considerable interest for instrumental materials science of cubic boron nitride.
