Zusammenfassung:CH4 concentration data and rates of microbial processes of carbon and sulfur assimilation occurring in bottom sediments samples from Sevastopol coastal area (Black Sea) are presented. Cold gas seepages in the Sevastopol Bay caused by penetration of the methane bubbles from the deep sedimentary layers into the subsurface horizons. Concentration of methane dissolved in near-bottom and pore waters at this station as well as CH4 oxidation rates in bottom sediments were statistically higher than at the background areas. It was showed that methanogenesis processes occurring in the underlying organic-rich sediments were account for high content of dissolved methane in subsurface sediments at Streletskaya Bay, that evidenced by a high contribution to the methane production from acetoclastic methanogens. In all investigated sediment columns methane oxidation rates exceed intensity of bacterial methanogenesis. The highest sulfate reduction rates detected in the oxidized subsurface sediment layers of Sevastopol coastal area.
