Marine Ecological JournalРезюме: | The basic achievements within the recent years regarding the study of deep-water areas with hypoxia and anoxia of the Mediterranean and Black seas, Cariaco Basin and also some another areas of the World ocean have been systematized and analyzed. Description of the oxygen-deficient habitats with inhabiting them microaerophilic benthic and plankton communities and characteristics of anoxic habitats are given in a form of discussion. It was shown that hypoxia and anoxia are fundamentally different states of marine environment, defining the various strategies of life or survival of eukaryotic organisms. At the same time, definite contradictions and ambiguity have been revealed for the current estimates of possibility of the strict anaerobic existence of aquatic eukaryotes. Selected problematic questions of using the available methods for studying marine redox-systems have been analyzed. |
