Description
Summary:The sound – scattering layers (SSL) spatial-temporary variability and the composition of hydrobionts inhabiting these SSL have been investigated as a result of analysis of acoustic and corresponding biological parameters data base (1979 – 1999). The Mediterranean basin was divided into regions, which have different hydrological, ecological and biological parameters. The region with the most vertical SSL stratification is the west region (Alboran Sea) and the region with the most daily SSL vertical migrations range is the central region (Ionian Sea). The high daily dynamics of subsurface layer acoustic scattering parameters is typical for the Black and the Aegean seas.
