У Чорному морі в лютому – квітні існує середній кореляційний зв'язок (R=0.64) між біолюмінесценцією і загальною чисельністю фітопланктону i менший (R=0.53) між  біолюмінесценцією і чисельністю свiтнi фітопланктону. Можна зробити припущення, що навесні, у біолюмінесцентне поле роблять внесок дрібні форми фітопланктону, що не враховуються в даній роботі, та/чи світні бактерії.
