Zusammenfassung:Estimation of current state of Black Sea sprat population in water areas of the Ukraine is based on the analysis of literary data and results of our fishery and biological investigations. Prospect of its further exploitation is considered. For the last few years (2000 - 2002 in different areas) the degradation features of sprat population state have been registered. These are an increase of the recruitment (yearlings) share and decrease of the mean size of fishes in the trawl catches, as well as the reduction of total landings and catch per effort at fishery intensification. Listed parameters testify to overfishing. Thus, it is necessary to reconsider the traditional point of view concerning underfishing of sprat stock in waters of Ukraine and appeals to further escalating of its fishery. Urgent steps should be undertaken to restrict sprat fisheries at least for 2 - 3 years and to change existing rules of fishery. Simultaneously, the population researches are important to be developed for the definition of separate unit stocks as independent objects of exploitation and management.
