Marine Ecological Journal| Zusammenfassung: | A short survey concerned the estimation of biological surface area, relative (related to body mass) to surface area and surface area index in plant systems of different kind and level of organization (individuals, populations, societies) was carried out. The equations, used by different authors, for the estimation of above mentioned characters were described. Based on the data from some aquatic systems, numerical comparisons of calculated surface parameters, evaluated by algorithms of authors of this paper, and by those of Dr. G. G. Minicheva, were done. It was shown that in all cases considered, algorithms by Minicheva resulted in miscalculations. The source of miscalculations was mentioned. The size of mistakes in different situations varies broadly and appears unpredictable, but generally it depends on relative surface area diversity in the object. The main usage of surface area parameters in agroecological and hydroecological modeling is discussed. |
