Результати багаторічних досліджень ІнБПМ біорізноманітності основних ланок біоти Чорного моря (на шельфі Кримського п-ова) дозволяє вважати, що пік деградації морської біоти, найбільшого збіднення її видового багатства припадає на період з кінця 1980-х до середини 1990-х рр. Після 1995 – 1998 рр. були зареєстровані ознаки оздоровлення екосистем, які торкаються усіх ланок як пелагічних, так і донних угруповань. Поліпшення стану біоти та збільшення кількості видів, які зустрічаються на кримському шельфі і навіть в Севастопольських бухтах триває до сьогодення. Наведенні відповідні приклади з різних таксономічних та екологічних групп, включно з планктоном, фіто- і зообентосом, рибами і дельфінами. Обговорюються супроводжуючі зміни абіотичних факторів.
