Викладені основні особливості океанографічного режиму Керченської протоки, у тому числі вітрового хвилювання, коливань рівня моря, системи течій та водообміну, льодового режиму, гідрохімічних умов, транспорту наносів. Виділені існуючі та потенційні екологічні проблеми, пов’язані із зарегулюванням водообміну через протоку. Це дає основу для попереднього якісного аналізу можливих наслідків антропогенного втручання у складну морську екосистему, зокрема – будівництва дамби у Тузлинській промоїні.
