Description
Summary:The history and the resuts of expeditions to the Black Sea Eastern coast, organized by the Kyiv Society of Naturalists in 1872 and 1874, for the study of marine invertebrate fauna are described. The important role of professor A. O. Kovalevsky in the organization of these expeditions, as well as in the selection of researcher – Nicholas Alexandrovich Krichagin, the Kiev University Zoological Cabinet conservator, are noted. During the first expedition the reconnaissance of the Eastern coast of the Kerch Strait to the Sukhum-Kale was carried out by Krichagin; in the second expedition of the efforts of the researcher were focused on the study of the Novorossiysk Bay - the most promising target finded. The basic scientific results of Krichagin’s expeditions – new species of crustaceans and conclusions about the richness and originality of the fauna of the Black sea – are described. The possible causes of the termination of the Black sea expeditions of the Kiev society of naturalists after 1874, and caring N. A. Krichagin from Kiev University are listed.
