The concept of «cultural-historical epochs», used by scientist to explain the change in cultural styles, is analyzed. Special attention is paid to Chyzhevsky’s «History of Ukrainian Literature», its main ideas and problems, as well as the reception of this fundamental work by the then Ukrainian critics (in particular, the reviews and opinions of Yuri Sherekh, Olexander Biletsky, Ihor Kostetsky, Sviatoslav Hordynsky and others are considered). A review of Chyzhevsky’s works devoted to the literary heritage of the Ukrainian baroque, is carried out, his understanding of the baroque as a style and epoch, as well as his view of the phenomenon of «baroque human» is determined. Chyzhevsky’s contribution to the study of the artistic and philosophical heritage of Hryhoriy Skovoroda as the last representative of the baroque tradition, his ideas about the connection of the Ukrainian thinker with medieval theologians, Slavic and German mystics is summed up. У статті розглянуто наукові напрацювання Дмитра Чижевського, зокрема ті аспекти його діяльності, які засвідчують увагу до історії української літератури. Проаналізовано концепцію «культурно-історичних епох», застосовану Д. Чижевським до пояснення зміни культурних стилів. Особливу увагу приділено «Історії української літератури» Д. Чижевського, її основним ідеям і проблемам, а також рецепції цієї фундаментальної праці тогочасною українською критикою. Здійснено огляд праць Д. Чижевського, присвячених літературній спадщині українського бароко, з’ясовано розуміння ним бароко як стилю та епохи, а також його погляд на феномен «людини бароко». Підсумовано внесок Д. Чижевського в дослідження художньо-філософської спадщини Григорія Сковороди як останнього репрезентанта барокової традиції, його ідеї про зв’язок українського мислителя із середньовічними теологами, слов’янськими та німецькими містиками.
