Nuclear and Radiation SafetyРезюме: | With the aim of improving the regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety of nuclear installations, regulatory document “Requirements for Safety Assessment of Nuclear Power Plants Regarding Natural External Hazards. NP 306.2.232-2021” (hereinafter referred to as the Requirements) was developed by State Enterprise “State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety” (SSTC NRS) together with State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU). This regulatory document was entered into force in accordance with SNRIU Order No. 263 dated 30 April 2021. This article presents an overview of the current Ukrainian standards and rules on nuclear and radiation safety in terms of taking into account possible natural external hazards to NPPs and considers in details the requirements of NP 306.2.232-2021 with the emphasis on new provisions for selection of natural hazards for further in-depth analysis, as well as for taking into account of design and beyond design natural hazards that should be considered during the analysis of design extension conditions including combinations of hazards. The aim of the article is to:
provide information to design, operation and safety analysis experts regarding up-to-date requirements for safety assessment of nuclear power plants to withstand external natural hazards;
highlight the main challenges faced by the Operator regarding the necessity to consider possible extraordinary natural disasters, including the lessons learned from the Fukushima-Daiichi accident caused by the impact of the earthquake and tsunami, which exceeded the design levels. |
