The need for energy security and power supply reliability in Ukraine requires up-to-date, reliable and safe electricity sources, taking into account the requirements to mitigate the effects of global climate changes and environmental constraints. Under these conditions, nuclear power plays a key role, which should be preserved in the long term in combination with renewable electricity sources. The development of nuclear power in Ukraine, particularly in the long term, faces a unique challenge due to the lack of national reactor construction. This situation necessitates the adoption of foreign designs, which are often based on regulatory requirements that significantly differ from national standards. Some of the main issues Ukraine will encounter in the regulation and licensing of new and replacement power units are considered taking into account this factor.
