Nuclear and Radiation Safety| Резюме: | The division of radioactive waste into classes in accordance with the new proposed classification is analyzed. This classification has been developed within INSC Project U4.01/08-C “Improvement of Classification of Radioactive Waste in Ukraine” to promote effectiveness in radioactive waste disposal. The main difference between the old and new classification is expanded options for radioactive waste disposal: six classes of waste that can be disposed of in one of the four types of repositories are introduced instead of two types of radioactive waste in the current classification. The implementation of the new classification will lead to noticeable reduction in costs for radioactive waste disposal, if strict compliance with safety objectives is ensured. The new classification involves improvement of methods for sorting and characterization of waste streams on sites and a number of changes in the existing legal and regulatory documents. |
