Description
Summary:The paper analyzes the influence of chemical correction of the primary coolant and secondary environment of WWER and PWR NPPs on the amount of generated liquid radioactive waste and radiation safety. It is established that ammonium-potassium water chemistry of the primary coolant used at Ukrainian NPPs causes generation of a larger amount of liquid radioactive waste (approximately thirtyfold increase) in comparison with the hydrogen-lithium one. Long-lived β–active isotopes К-40 and С-14, which are generated from components of the primary coolant such as ammonium and potassium solutions, are potentially dangerous for human health and the environment. Chemical correction of the secondary operating environment at European NPPs is based on considerable increasing of pH value in order to reduce corrosion of the condensate feedwater system equipment. This may be possible at Ukrainian NPPs only if copper-containing equipment is replaced.
