The typical defects of XLPE insulation which result from the production, design, laying and operation of the cables are shown and explained. The causes of damages and defects of the insulation are analyzed. The significance of electrical operating conditions of the cable and the need to use non-destructive testing methods for the long service life of XLPE insulation are revealed. References 49, figures 7, tables 3. Наведено фактори та механізми старіння зшито-поліетиленової ізоляції силових кабелів, мультифізичні процеси та явища, що супроводжують деградацію і призводять до пробою ізоляції. Представлено характерні дефекти ізоляції, які виникають при виробництві, проектуванні, прокладанні та експлуатації кабелів. Проаналізовано причини виникнення дефектів і ушкоджень ізоляції. Показано роль електричних режимів роботи кабелів і переваги використання неруйнуючих методів їх випробування для тривалого терміну служби ізоляції. Бібл. 49, рис. 7, табл. 3.
