Проведено аналіз вирішення в Україні та за кордоном проблеми класифікації джерел енергії, що не належать до традиційних. Цю проблему спричинено подальшим ростом їх використання, який забезпечується створенням пільг згідно з чинним законодавством і положеннями Кіотського протоколу. За результатами аналізу автор пропонує проводити розподіл енергоресурсів з урахуванням екологічного ефекту їх використання і поділяти енергетичні системи на традиційні та альтернативні. Останні, своєї черги, поділити на такі, що використовують або поновлювані джерела енергії, або нетрадиційні (вторинні) чи альтернативні види палива.
