З палеогеографических етапів голоцену найбільш нестійкі і найбільш контрастні зміни природних умов припадають на суббореальний період (4,6-2,6 років тому). Вони були настільки значними, що приводили до зміні господарської діяльності - падіння значення землеробства і зростанню ролі скотарства. Інтерес до цих подій зріс останнім часом. І хоча до сих пір немає однозначної думки щодо впливу на природні процеси господарської діяльності людини, залишається безсумнівним, що знання умов минулого дає ключ до прогнозування подій майбутнього.
