Throughout his extensive scientific career, which was consistently linked to the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IP NASU), Petro Tomchuk worked on a diverse range of problems spanning various domains of theoretical physics. The main areas of his research concerned the physics of semiconductors, metal island films and nanoparticles, liquid crystals and colloids, and molecular structures with hydrogen bonds. Those studies had a common feature: they dealt with non-equilibrium processes and systems, which Petro Mykhailovych was interested in. Kinetic theory, distribution function, fluctuations, microscopic approach, density matrix – these are basic concepts that P.M. Tomchuk most often operated with. Петро Михайлович Томчук – взiрцевий український фiзик-теоретик, для якого наука була кредом життя. Упродовж своєї тривалої наукової дiяльностi, яку вiн незмiнно проводив в Iнститутi фiзики НАН України, Петро Томчук працював над рiзноманiтним спектром задач, розвиваючи теоретичну фiзику у багатьох напрямах. Основнi напрями його дослiджень стосувалися фiзики напiвпровiдникiв, металевих острiвцевих плiвок i наночастинок, рiдинних кристалiв i колоїдiв, молекулярних структур з водневими зв’язками. У Петра Михайловича завжди викликали iнтерес нерiвноважнi процеси i системи, на дослiдженнi яких вiн зосередив свої зусилля. Кiнетична теорiя, функцiя розподiлу, флуктуацiї, мiкроскопiчний пiдхiд, матриця густини – це тi основнi поняття, якими найчастiше оперував П.М. Томчук.
