| description | This study analyzes and compares existing methods for regulating reactive power in a low-voltage microgrid (MV) model characterized by a predominance of the active component of transmission line resistances and connected to a medium-voltage distribution network (MV), utilizing reactive power from renewable energy sources (RES) and energy storage systems (ESS) with inverters. Special attention is given to the local reactive power regulation mode at the output of the distribution transformer, particularly the compensation of reactive power for loads. A key aspect of the study is the in-depth analysis and classification of reactive power parameters in low-voltage microgrids, which are characterized by significant variability in power consumption and a limited number of loads. For the first time, results of the autocorrelation function calculation are presented for this type of microgrid with 10-second quantization intervals for 8 residential houses, revealing the dynamics of reactive power. High autocorrelation (in the range of [0.889, 1.0]) was established over a short interval of 4 cycles, while low autocorrelation was observed over intervals of 15 cycles. The reactive power of the load was classified as a process with "short memory." Based on the findings regarding consumption properties derived from empirical data, a new method of CIIR4 reactive power regulation for the studied network is justified and developed, using a 4th order recursive filter (IIR – Infinite Impulse Response) in a control system with a delay of 1 cycle. The use of "memory" of the filter to a depth of 4 cycles of the previous input signal, adapted to the characteristic properties of the autocorrelation function of the regulated signal, is proposed. During optimization, the stability criterion of the control system was taken into account. An important aspect of the obtained novelty is the optimization of filter parameters by minimizing the mean square error, specifically the reactive power at the output of the distribution transformer. This ensures high compensation efficiency for the specific consumption dynamics of low-voltage microgrids. The method is implemented under conditions of limited information transmission speed regarding the magnitude of the error. The study utilized real data on load fluctuations from a group of residential buildings, collected over weekly time intervals in an operational network with 10-second quantization intervals. An example of the results of optimizing the parameters of the IIR regulator, obtained by minimizing the mean square error in the time domain, is presented. The analysis of the obtained results confirms a high level of reactive power compensation for the loads of low-voltage microgrids and stability of the proposed control system. |

IIR-Infinite impulse response.

Smart Grid [1].
Cos φ, P(U), Cos φ(P) [12],
(IIR – Infinite impulse

Plegma Labs, National Technical University of Athens
(https://pleg.ma) and University of Strathclyde [27] та збе-

Bilinear Transform Method [34].
𝑏0 = 𝐾𝑝 +
𝐾𝐼𝑇
2
+
2𝐾𝐷
𝑇
𝑏1 = 𝐾𝐼𝑇 −
4𝐾𝐷
𝑇
𝑏2 = −𝐾𝑃 +
𝐾𝐼𝑇
2
+
2𝐾𝐷
𝑇
𝑏𝑧 = [𝑏0, 𝑏1, 𝑏2]
𝑎0 = 1, 𝑎1 = 0, 𝑎2 = −1.
𝑎𝑧 = [𝑎0, 𝑎1, 𝑎2]
𝐺𝑜𝑝(𝑧) = 𝑡𝑓(𝑏𝑧, 𝑎𝑧)
𝐺(𝑧) = 𝑡𝑓(𝑏𝑧, 𝑎𝑧)
IIR (Infinite

CIIR4 (control IIT 4)
𝑚𝑠𝑒 = √1/𝑁 ∑ 𝜀2𝑁
1
𝐹 = 𝐾𝑚𝑠𝑒 · 𝑚𝑠𝑒 + 𝐾𝑝𝑜𝑙 · 𝑝𝑜𝑙,
SHGO (simplicial homology global optimization) [39],
(Training-Testing Split).
𝑎𝑧 = [0.9458 , −0.8431 , −0.5137 ,0.0152 , 0.4017],
𝑏z = [0.6404 , 0.0142 ,−0.0891 ,−0.2449,−0.0712].
Gcl_delay = feedback(G, Delay_z,Ts), Ts=1.
max(abs(poles(Glc_delay)))= 0.8315 <1.

Abstract. This study analyzes and compares existing methods
for regulating reactive power in a low-voltage microgrid (MV)
model characterized by a predominance of the active
component of transmission line resistances and connected to a
medium-voltage distribution network (MV), utilizing reactive power from renewable energy sources (RES) and
energy storage systems (ESS) with inverters. Special attention is given to the local reactive power regulation mode
at the output of the distribution transformer, particularly the compensation of reactive power for loads.
A key aspect of the study is the in-depth analysis and classification of reactive power parameters in low-voltage
microgrids, which are characterized by significant variability in power consumption and a limited number of loads.
For the first time, results of the autocorrelation function calculation are presented for this type of microgrid with
10-second quantization intervals for 8 residential houses, revealing the dynamics of reactive power. High
autocorrelation (in the range of [0.889, 1.0]) was established over a short interval of 4 cycles, while low
autocorrelation was observed over intervals of 15 cycles. The reactive power of the load was classified as a process
with "short memory."
Based on the findings regarding consumption properties derived from empirical data, a new method of CIIR4
reactive power regulation for the studied network is justified and developed, using a 4th order recursive filter (IIR
– Infinite Impulse Response) in a control system with a delay of 1 cycle. The use of "memory" of the filter to a depth
of 4 cycles of the previous input signal, adapted to the characteristic properties of the autocorrelation function of
the regulated signal, is proposed. During optimization, the stability criterion of the control system was taken into
account. An important aspect of the obtained novelty is the optimization of filter parameters by minimizing the
mean square error, specifically the reactive power at the output of the distribution transformer. This ensures high
compensation efficiency for the specific consumption dynamics of low-voltage microgrids. The method is
implemented under conditions of limited information transmission speed regarding the magnitude of the error.
The study utilized real data on load fluctuations from a group of residential buildings, collected over weekly time
intervals in an operational network with 10-second quantization intervals. An example of the results of optimizing
the parameters of the IIR regulator, obtained by minimizing the mean square error in the time domain, is
presented. The analysis of the obtained results confirms a high level of reactive power compensation for the loads
of low-voltage microgrids and stability of the proposed control system.

Introduction
The current stage of development in the electric power in-
dustry, particularly distributed generation, is characterized
by a rapid increase in the share of microgrids (MG) as a
Smart Grid technology [1]. Such systems are formed as local
electric power systems and consist of groups of distributed
loads, generation, particularly from renewable energy
sources (RES), energy storage systems (ESS), and corre-
sponding control systems [2]. Standard terminology in the

field of MG is presented, for example, in [3]. The implemen-
tation of MG ensures increased resilience of the power sys-
tem, significant economic advantages, and expanded func-
tional capabilities by integrating a group of loads,
distributed generation, and RES [4, 5] into a single, effec-
tively managed local entity. An important feature of MG is
their ability to operate both in connection with the main
electric power distribution system [6] and in an isolated (is-
land) mode [7, 8]. One of the key advantages of MG is the
localization of generation and consumption of electric en-
ergy, which significantly reduces losses associated with its
distribution [4, 9], which in Ukraine vary for distribution
systems but reach significantly higher values than in Euro-
pean countries [10]. The impact of MG modes on improving
the efficiency of electricity supply is presented, for exam-
ple, in [5].
The use of centralized control allows for a relatively simple
way to deploy and monitor the entire system in real-time.
Within the framework of centralized control, a single central
controller performs the functions of the main management
system [11, 12]. In the context of ensuring power balance,
one of the important tasks in MG is effective management of
electric energy generation [13]. This includes regulation us-
ing Smart Grid technologies [14] for both active and reactive
power from MG sources, taking into account consumption
dynamics, which becomes particularly relevant during the in-
tegration of RES and ESS with inverters.
The development of methods and models for regulating re-
active power at the input of MG, especially using reactive
power from MG sources, primarily RES, is a relevant scien-
tific and practical task for the further development of MG,
as well as for improving the quality parameters of electric
energy in distribution systems [9].
Today in Europe and worldwide, requirements for inverters
are standardized, through which modern RES stations, pri-
marily wind and solar stations, are connected to electrical
networks. Such requirements relate to limitations on the
permissible ratio of reactive to active power generation
[15]. For example, in section 4.7.2.3.1, it is stated that the
generating station must be capable of operating in one of
the control modes, with only one mode being implemented
at a time, namely: P(Q), Cos φ, P(U), Cos φ(P) [12], for which
corresponding technical solutions are proposed [15]. One
such mode is the reactive power setpoint mode (Q). The
standard requires renewable energy producers with invert-
ers to be capable of generating reactive power components
during periods of no solar or wind energy production, par-
ticularly during nighttime intervals for solar power plants
(IEC TS 62898-3-3, Section 6.3.3.2). Additionally, the stand-
ard defines requirements for the permissible ratio between
reactive and active power generation [15].
The relevance and necessity of developing effective meth-
ods for controlling reactive power in specific, variable loads
form the foundation of the presented study.
Problem Statement
The aim of the study is to develop a method for local regu-
lation of reactive power in a low-voltage microgrid under
conditions of limited data transmission speed in the control
system. To achieve this goal, it is proposed to utilize reac-
tive power from renewable energy sources (RES) and en-
ergy storage systems (ESS) with inverters, and to imple-
ment regulation using a 4th order recursive filter (IIR -
Infinite Impulse Response) (hereinafter referred to as IIR 4).
For the construction of the control system, it is necessary
to investigate the properties of the autocorrelation func-
tion of reactive power consumption, the transfer function
of the low-voltage microgrid (MV), the transfer function of
the system with negative feedback and a signal delay of 1
cycle, which corresponds to the actual capabilities of regu-
lation systems using most inverters available on the market
with a capacity of 50-150 kW. It is assumed that the man-
agement of the regulation system is assigned to the central
controller of the microgrid in accordance with the require-
ments of standard IEC 62898-3-1, section 6.3.4 [11], which
implements the specified function by controlling the oper-
ation of the inverter.
Properties of the Transfer Function of Low-Voltage Mi-
crogrids. For effective modeling of the reactive power reg-
ulation system, it is necessary to consider the transfer char-
acteristics of the low-voltage microgrid. Various software
packages are proposed for the study of microgrids, specifi-
cally for residential, industrial, commercial [17], urban, and
rural networks [18], [19], [20], [21], [22].
According to [11], the main features of low-voltage mi-
crogrids include: short lengths and low resistances of feed-
ers, low X/R ratios due to the use of cable lines with a pre-
dominance of the active component, as well as the
operation of microgrids both connected to the distribution
system and in isolation.
The calculation of reactive power losses in transmission
lines is described in detail, for example, in [23].

The analysis of the calculation results based on the above
expression using data from a real object allowed for the for-
mation of a hypothesis that, when calculating the flow of
reactive power in low-voltage microgrids, reactive power

losses can be neglected due to their small values. To verify
this hypothesis, an analysis of reactive power losses in var-
ious standard low-voltage networks connected to common
networks was conducted. The calculation of the ratio of to-
tal reactive power losses to the total reactive power of the
loads for several test networks is presented in Table 1. It
should be noted that when considering daily variations in
load power, power losses will decrease. Since the values
presented in Table 1 indicate small reactive power losses in
low-voltage microgrids, within the scope of this study, it
was assumed that these losses can be neglected during the
development of reactive power control methods for LV mi-
crogrids. An overview of analysis capabilities for microgrids
is provided in [24].

It has been concluded that the transfer function of the low-
voltage microgrid (MG) in the z-domain can be represented
as an amplifier with a gain of 𝐺(𝑧)=1.0, which forms the
basis for the developed method of reactive power regula-
tion in the microgrid.
Properties of Loads in Low-Voltage Microgrids
For effective regulation, it is crucial to consider the dynamic
characteristics of reactive power consumption by the loads
in low-voltage microgrids. The study examines the reactive
power consumption of a group of 8 residential houses over
a week with a sampling interval of 10 seconds. According to
classification, this microgrid falls under small microgrids
with a capacity of up to 10 MW [25],[26]. The consumption
data is created and maintained by Plegma Labs, National
Technical University of Athens (https://pleg.ma), and the
University of Strathclyde [27], and is stored in the Plegma
package [28, 29]. The data has high resolution with meas-
urement intervals of 10 seconds and records over several
years. For this study, consumption data for a limited inter-
val of 1 week was used: from August 16, 2023, to August
26, 2023.
The calculated autocorrelation function (ACF) 𝑎𝑢𝑡𝑜𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑟 of
the total reactive power consumption is presented in Fig. 1.
It is shown for the first time that the autocorrelation func-
tion of reactive power consumption has values in the range
of [0.889, 1.0] over an interval of 4 cycles. Thus, a significant
autocorrelation dependence is obtained over the interval
of 4 cycles. Another feature is that 𝑎𝑢𝑡𝑜𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑟<0.75 over
intervals greater than 15 cycles, indicating a decrease in de-
pendence. The generation of reactive power by the load
can be classified as a process with "short memory." The
findings are used in further decisions regarding the method
of reactive power regulation in low-voltage microgrids un-
der limited information transmission speed.
Methods for regulating reactive power in electrical net-
works [9] are used to reduce active losses and are applied
considering that the transfer function has a quadratic form.
However, for low-voltage microgrids, the results obtained
for the dependence of reactive power at the beginning of
the feeder section have significant differences due to the
small values of reactive power losses. This has been used to
construct the transfer function of low-voltage microgrids in
the development of the reactive power regulation method.
It should be noted that one of the well-known methods for
regulating reactive power in electrical networks is the use
of a PID controller, the parameter tuning of which has been
studied, for example, in [30].
Fig. 1. Autocorrelation function of reactive power of loads
Let’s consider the implementation of known methods and
determine the number of previous memory cycles required
for their implementation. The transfer function of a stand-
ard PID controller has the form:
𝐺(𝑠) = 𝑃 +
𝑃
𝐼 · 𝑠
+ 𝑃 · 𝐷 · 𝑠
After transformation:
𝐺(𝑠) =
𝑃 · 𝐷 · 𝑠2 +· 𝑃 · 𝑠 +
𝑃
𝐼
𝑠
The digital implementation of the PID controller using bilin-
ear transformation requires memory for two previous cy-
cles. The improvement of regulation through adaptive pa-
rameter changes of the PID, as suggested in [30], implies
using memory for two previous cycles. To suppress the in-
fluence of high-frequency components, a configuration
with the series connection of G(s) and a low-pass filter is
used 𝐿(𝑠) = 𝐾
𝑊
𝑠+𝑊
. [31]. The digital implementation of
the filter requires memory of the three previous time steps.
For regulating reactive power, other methods are also
used, in which digital implementation requires one or two
54

previous cycles. In these cases, a cascade implementation
of low-order filters with local memory is utilized. For exam-
ple, a single-neuron adaptive PID controller [32] addresses
efficiency issues in dynamic short-circuit conditions. The
device has three previous cycles. Thus, in all the mentioned
methods, the regulator requires memory for one or two
previous cycles.
To regulate reactive power of sinusoidal signals, it is sug-
gested to use IIR filters of 8th to 10th order [33], which im-
plement a Butterworth bandpass filter with a central fre-
quency of 50 Hz and a specified amplitude-frequency
characteristic. Such filters have memory for 8 to 10 previ-
ous cycles. The well-known Bilinear Transform Method [34]
was used for filter tuning. This solution cannot be used for
local reactive power regulation due to the limitations on
the speed of instantaneous current value transmission dur-
ing information exchange in the control system.
An overview of methods for selecting an IIR filter for sinus-
oidal signals is presented in [34]. It should be noted that the
choice of a specific standard type of IIR filter does not guar-
antee optimal reactive power compensation for specified
objects, such as low-voltage microgrids (MG).
The discussed modernized PID controllers [35] can be im-
plemented with a 2nd order IIR (Infinite Impulse Response)
filter, which is equivalent to difference equations. The pa-
rameters of the PID controller are 𝐾𝑃,𝐾𝐼, 𝐾𝐷. The transfer
function 𝐺(𝑧) of the filter has parameters:
𝑏0 = 𝐾𝑝 +
𝐾𝐼𝑇
2
+
2𝐾𝐷
𝑇
𝑏1 = 𝐾𝐼𝑇 −
4𝐾𝐷
𝑇
𝑏2 = −𝐾𝑃 +
𝐾𝐼𝑇
2
+
2𝐾𝐷
𝑇
𝑏𝑧 = [𝑏0, 𝑏1, 𝑏2]
𝑎0 = 1, 𝑎1 = 0, 𝑎2 = −1.
𝑎𝑧 = [𝑎0, 𝑎1, 𝑎2]
𝐺𝑜𝑝(𝑧) = 𝑡𝑓(𝑏𝑧, 𝑎𝑧)
𝐺(𝑧) = 𝑡𝑓(𝑏𝑧, 𝑎𝑧)
This transformation allows representing the control system
with a 2nd order IIR filter using 2 previous input data points:
𝐺𝐼𝐼𝑅2(𝑧) =
𝑏(1) · 𝑧2 + 𝑏(2) · 𝑧 + 𝑏(3)
𝑎(1) · 𝑧2 + 𝑎(2) · 𝑧 + 𝑎(3)
Thus, the presented implementation of the well-known
control system with a 2nd order IIR filter (hereinafter re-
ferred to as IIR 2) uses 2 previous values of the input signal.
Reactive Power Regulation Method CIIR4 (Control IIR 4 Or-
der). Based on the properties of the autocorrelation func-
tion of the reactive power of loads in low-voltage mi-
crogrids, the proposed CIIR4 method is developed
considering defined criteria for efficiency and stability. The
method is based on the application of a 4th order recursive
IIR filter (hereinafter referred to as IIR 4), which is charac-
terized by an infinite impulse response and uses four previ-
ous values of the input signal and four feedback values to
calculate the current output value, meaning the filter has a
"memory" of four previous cycles.
The method features the optimization of the mean square
error of the IIR filter parameters calculated over time inter-
vals, where an increase in regulation efficiency means min-
imizing such deviation.
The choice of filter order and optimal filter parameters over
significant time intervals was influenced by several factors:
first, the investigated autocorrelation function of the reac-
tive power of loads in low-voltage microgrids considering
system stability requirements; second, the investigated and
constructed transfer function of low-voltage microgrids in
the form of a unit transfer coefficient; and finally, the con-
sideration of a 1-cycle signal delay in the control system.
The proposed method involves the implementation of the
following stages: analysis of the autocorrelation function of
the reactive power of loads, optimization of the parameters
of the 4th order IIR filter considering the mean square error
criterion and stability, as well as calculating the response of
the control system on training and testing samples. The
main purpose is to regulate reactive power in microgrids in
the presence of a "short memory" load power process. Lo-
cal regulation is carried out in accordance with the mi-
crogrid standard [11], with remote measurement of reac-
tive power at the output of the distribution transformer
and under conditions of limited data transmission rate.

The implementation of the control system based on the
proposed method will practically ensure a reduction in the
value of reactive power at the output of the distribution
transformer. In the study, the signal sampling has intervals
of 10 seconds and corresponds to a limited speed of infor-
mation transmission regarding the current error value.
The obtained IIR filter can be characterized as an optimized
filter with arbitrary amplitude-frequency characteristics,
unlike classical types, as it is designed to minimize the error
in the time domain rather than conform to specific tem-
plate frequency characteristics. Figure 2 presents the block
diagram of the CIIR4 (control IIR 4) reactive power regula-
tion method. The IIR represents a cascade implementation
of a 4th order filter with local memory.
The process of optimizing the filter parameters 𝑎 , 𝑏 aims
to minimize the error between the output of the microgrid
𝑞𝑡𝑟, which represents the reactive power at the output of
the distribution transformer 𝑇𝑟 and the specified reference
𝑅𝑒𝑓. Considering previous conclusions regarding the ne-
glect of reactive power losses, the transfer function of the
low-voltage microgrid 𝐺𝑔𝑟𝑖𝑑=1. In the case of choosing
Ref=0, that is, when aiming to achieve a zero value of reac-
tive power at the output of the distribution transformer,
the error represents the reactive power at the output of the
distribution transformer 𝜀 = −𝑞𝑡𝑟.
The transfer function of the open-loop system, represented
in Figure 2, has the form of a 4th order IIR filter:
𝑆𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛(𝑧) =
𝑏(1)·𝑧4+𝑏(2)·𝑧3+𝑏(3)·𝑧2+𝑏(4)·𝑧+𝑏(5)
𝑎(1)·𝑧4+𝑎(2)·𝑧3+𝑎(3)·𝑧2+𝑎(4)·𝑧+𝑎(5)
Let’s compare the control system with the 4th order IIR fil-
ter to the previously discussed 2nd order IIR filter with local
memory of 2 cycles. This contrasts with the 4th order IIR
filter, which can use 4 previous input and output data cycles
in its internal calculations, allowing it to model significantly
more complex dynamics due to the consideration of the re-
active power consumption properties of the low-voltage
microgrid, namely substantial autocorrelation over an in-
terval of 4 cycles and the presence of a short memory pro-
cess.
Selection of Optimal Parameters 𝑎, 𝑏 for the Filter. In se-
lecting the filter parameters, the first criterion used was the
optimization of the mean squared error (Mean Squared Er-
ror - MSE) [37] in the time domain:
𝑚𝑠𝑒 = √1/𝑁 ∑ 𝜀2𝑁
1
As a second criterion 𝑝𝑜𝑙 was chosen as the deviation of the
modulus of the maximum value of the closed-loop system
pole from 0.95, which allows for obtaining a stable system
[37]:
𝑖𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑙 > 0.95, 𝑝𝑜𝑙 = max (𝑎𝑏𝑠 (𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠(𝐺𝑐𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑦))) ,
𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑙 = 0
The multi-criteria objective function for optimization has
the form:
𝐹 = 𝐾𝑚𝑠𝑒 · 𝑚𝑠𝑒 + 𝐾𝑝𝑜𝑙 · 𝑝𝑜𝑙,
where 𝐾𝑚𝑠𝑒 , 𝐾𝑝𝑜𝑙- are weighting coefficients.
The optimization of the objective function of the system
showed that optimal results 𝐹 were obtained when 𝑝𝑜𝑙 ≤
0.95, i.e., for a stable system.
At the end of the optimization process, the coefficient of
reactive power compensation is evaluated:
𝐾𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝 =
√1/𝑁 ∑ 𝜀2𝑁
1
√1/𝑁 ∑ 𝑄𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑
2𝑁
1
=
√1/𝑁 ∑ 𝑞𝑡𝑟2𝑁
1
√1/𝑁 ∑ 𝑄𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑
2𝑁
1
where 𝑁 - is the number of measurements, 𝑞𝑡𝑟 is the reac-
tive power on the low side of the transformer., 𝑄𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑 – total
reactive power of MM loads.
The coefficient 𝐾𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝 – is the ratio of the root mean
square (RMS) error, i.e., the reactive power at the output
of the distribution transformer, to the RMS value of the re-
active power of the MM loads.
At each iteration, the system is tested for dynamic stability,
i.e., its ability to maintain normal operating conditions un-
der significant disturbances. The stability requirement is
that for every pole of the closed-loop system,
𝑎𝑏𝑠(𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠)) < 1, where poles are the poles of the closed-
loop system. At the final stage of parameter selection, the
stability margin is verified [38].
To address the formulated optimization problem, the Sim-
plicial Homology Global Optimization (SHGO) method [39]
was employed. This approach enabled the determination of
the optimal parameter values az and bz for the fourth-or-
der Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter. In order to validate
the obtained parameters of the control system, the input
signal dataset was partitioned into training and testing sub-
sets using a Training-Testing Split strategy, ensuring an ob-
jective evaluation of the model’s performance.
An example of modeling the CIIR4 method for reactive
power regulation in Low-Voltage Microgrids (LV MG) is pre-
sented. As the object of study, reactive power consumption
data from the Plegma project were used, covering 8 residen-
tial buildings [28]. The dataset includes the total reactive
power over a one-week period from August 19 to 26, 2023,
with a sampling interval of 10 seconds. The control of the
regulation system is implemented via an inverter, which
serves as the central controller of the microgrid in accord-
ance with the requirements of IEC 62898-1, Section 6.2.1.
In the first stage, optimization of the transfer function pa-
rameters of the system 𝑆(𝑧), (illustrated in Fig. 3) was car-
ried out, resulting in the identification of the optimal pa-
rameters az and bz of the 4th-order IIR filter:
𝑎𝑧 = [0.9458 , −0.8431 , −0.5137 ,0.0152 , 0.4017],
𝑏z = [0.6404 , 0.0142 ,−0.0891 ,−0.2449,−0.0712].
To assess the stability of the system, a closed-loop model
was constructed incorporating a one-step delay between
56

the input signal 𝑠𝑝 and the control signal 𝑝𝑣 . The transfer
function of the delay is given by:
𝐷𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑧 =
1
𝑧
.
The system is closed through the LV Microgrid model
Grid(z) and includes a one-step delay. The parameters of
the closed-loop system are computed using a dedicated
function and are required for stability verification at each
iteration of the parameter optimization process 𝑎𝑧, 𝑏𝑧:
Gcl_delay = feedback(G, Delay_z,Ts), Ts=1.
The system is considered stable, as it satisfies the following
condition:
max(abs(poles(Glc_delay)))= 0.8315 <1.
Figure 3 illustrates the reactive power of the loads and the
inverter (shown in blue and green, respectively) over a one-
week interval, where N denotes the control time step.
Figures 4a and 4b present selected fragments of the control
process over different time intervals corresponding to var-

also include the results obtained from a control system em-
ploying a 2nd-order IIR filter.
Table 2 summarizes the control performance of the system
with a 4th-order IIR filter in comparison with a 2nd-order IIR

The analysis of the data presented in Table 2 demonstrates
an improvement in the effectiveness of using the 4th-order
IIR filter for reactive power control in low-voltage mi-
crogrids (LV MG). The compensation coefficient for reactive
power improved by 5.1%.
In the second stage of the study, to further validate the ef-
fectiveness of the proposed method, the dataset was di-
vided into training and testing subsets (Training-Testing
Split). The results for both the training and testing sets are
presented in Table 3.
The obtained results confirm the enhanced efficiency of the
control process, as evidenced by the low value of the com-
pensation coefficient Kcomp, while simultaneously satisfy-
ing the stability requirements of the control system.

Сonclusions. Based on the analysis of actual reactive power
profiles for a low-voltage microgrid (LV MG) serving a group
of residential buildings with a sampling interval of 10 sec-
onds, an autocorrelation function was obtained. This func-
tion shows values close to 1 within a 4-step interval and
drops below 0.75 beyond a 15-step interval. This allowed
the classification of reactive power variation in the LV MG
loads as a short-memory process.
A novel method for reactive power control in LV MG loads,
incorporating renewable energy sources and energy stor-
age systems, has been developed. The method involves:
analysis of the autocorrelation function of reactive power
in LV MG loads; multi-parameter optimization of the root
mean square error in the control system, considering the
stability criterion; computation of the system response for
both training and testing datasets over a one-week interval.
The proposed method is based on the implementation of a
fourth-order recursive IIR filter within the control system,
incorporating a one-step delay.
The analysis of the obtained results confirmed the effec-
tiveness of utilizing the memory of the 4th-order IIR filter
with a depth of four previous input steps for LV microgrids
characterized by loads exhibiting short-memory process
properties. The proposed method adapts to the established
characteristics of the regulated signal and takes into ac-
count the high autocorrelation over short intervals.
The filter parameters were derived by minimizing the root
mean square deviation in the time domain while satisfying
the system stability criterion. The paper presents the opti-
mization results of the IIR controller parameters as well as
the outcomes of local reactive power regulation in the LV
microgrid under the constraint of limited data transmission
rate regarding the error signal — based on real-world data.
The study confirms a high level of reactive power compen-
sation for LV microgrid loads when applying the developed
method on testing datasets. The obtained results provide a
foundation for the further implementation and testing of
the reactive power control system in LV microgrids.

Trach, I. Miroshnyk , V. voltage control, reactive power, load, microgrid, recursive filter, IIR – Infinite Impulse Response. IIR-Infinite impulse response. This study analyzes and compares existing methods for regulating reactive power in a low-voltage microgrid (MV) model characterized by a predominance of the active component of transmission line resistances and connected to a medium-voltage distribution network (MV), utilizing reactive power from renewable energy sources (RES) and energy storage systems (ESS) with inverters.
