description The effective integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the power grid largely depends on energy storage systems, where second-life batteries are playing an increasingly important role. In this paper, the features of controlling the charging processes of used lithiumion batteries are considered, for which traditional constant current and constant voltage (CC-CV) charging methods are ineffective and accelerate their degradation. The development and proposal of an adaptive charging algorithm based on fuzzy logic are presented. This approach allows optimizing the charging process by taking into account dynamic changes in battery characteristics, such as voltage, current, temperature, state of charge (SoC), battery health (SoH) and state of functioning (SoF). It is shown that the proposed algorithm increases efficiency, safety and significantly increases the service life of batteries compared to traditional methods, adapting to their condition in real time.

Адаптивні алгоритми можна класифікувати за мето- дами, які використовуються для прийняття рішень про адаптацію: алгоритми, що базуються на правилах та по- рогових значеннях (Rule-Based / Threshold-Based); ана- лізі профілів напруги / струму (Profile Analysis-Based); моделюванні (Model-Based Algorithms); даних / ма- шинне навчання (Data-Driven / Machine Learning - ML); імпульсне адаптивне заряджання (Adaptive Pulsed Charging). The effective integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the power grid largely depends on energy storage systems, where second-life batteries are playing an increasingly important role. Keywords: lithium-ion batteries, battery charging, adaptive algorithms, fuzzy logic, used batteries, battery degradation, control systems. Introduction. According to data from the International En- ergy Agency [1], the share of electric vehicles (EVs) in the global automotive market more than doubled (from 4 % to 10 %) between 2021 and 2023. In the first quarter of 2024, EV sales increased by approximately 25 % compared to the first quarter of 2023. A Bloomberg NEF report indicates that global investments in the energy sector exceeded $2 trillion for the first time in 2024 [2]. A significant portion of these investments is directed towards the development of battery energy storage systems (BESS), which are a key element for grid stabilization and the effective integration of renewable energy sources. Concurrently, substantial funds are being in- vested in the electrification of transport, which is also part of the global transformation of the energy sector. These data demonstrate that global demand for electric transport is steadily increasing, driving an increase in the number of end-of-life (EOL) batteries. Battery disposal is a high-cost and technologically complex process that has a significant impact on the environment throughout its lifecy- cle. Firstly, the extraction of raw materials (lithium, cobalt, nickel) is associated with the depletion of natural resources and pollution. Secondly, if spent batteries are improperly disposed of, their components form toxic compounds that migrate into the soil and water, creating a long-term threat to the environment. Most global electric vehicle manufacturers recommend re- placing batteries when their capacity falls below 80 %. How- ever, these battery packs remain suitable for second-life re- use in energy storage and accumulation systems, both in industry and in households. The reuse of batteries allows for a reduction in the capital costs associated with creating and updating energy storage systems while simultaneously providing the necessary power and duration of autono- mous operation. Given the constant growth in demand for electric transport and, consequently, the increasing number of used batteries suitable for reuse in energy storage systems, the topic of de- veloping methods that allow for their efficient and safe charg- ing is crucial and relevant. The traditional CC-CV (Constant Cur- rent-Constant Voltage) charging protocol is not optimal for second-hand batteries and can accelerate their degradation. Therefore, a critical task is the creation of an adaptive control system for the lithium-ion battery charging process that takes into account the dynamic changes in their characteristics and optimizes charging parameters in real-time to increase the ser- vice life, enhance operational safety, and improve the effi- ciency of using second-hand lithium-ion batteries. The objective of this work is to substantiate and develop an adaptive control algorithm for a charging system of second- hand lithium-ion batteries using fuzzy logic. 1 Cand. of Tech. After diagnostics, operational cells with similar characteristics are selected, grouped, and as- sembled into new battery packs. Typically, the following key characteristics are checked: capacity, internal re- sistance, voltage, and self-discharge. When assembling sec- tions from used battery cells, it's crucial to group cells that are closest in capacity and internal resistance. Even a slight difference in these parameter values leads to a voltage var- iation among individual cells during operation, causing the Battery Management System (BMS) to disconnect the group of cells or the entire battery pack. We will examine battery characteristics that can be used to assess their current state and suitability for reuse. One such indicator is the battery State of Health (SoH), expressed as a percentage and reflecting the battery's current condition relative to its initial state. The next indicator is the State of Charge (SoC), also expressed as a percentage, which shows how much energy remains in the battery relative to its full initial capacity. However, assessing SoH and SoC is insufficient for second- hand batteries, as a comprehensive evaluation of the State of Function (SoF) is required to ensure the battery is suita- ble for reuse and can perform its functions safely and relia- bly. The SoF indicator is not a strictly defined concept but is generally defined as the battery's ability to maintain its functions for a specific application. SoF can take into ac- count other indicators such as SoC and SoH, as well as op- erating temperature, charge/discharge history, presence of faults (overvoltage, overload, sharp temperature increase), concentration of flammable gases, and so on [3]. There are several methods for SoF estimation [4]. The bat- tery State of Function (SoF) assessment can be performed using the Power Demand Based method. This method ana- lyzes the battery's ability to operate under the current load. To do this, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) is first deter- mined using the relationship between voltage and charge level (the VOC−SOC curve). Knowing the maximum voltage change and the battery's current capacity at a given time, one can calculate the battery's instantaneous deliverable power. Based on this calculation, the battery is assigned an operational status: SoF=1 (suitable) or SoF=0 (unsuitable). In [3], SoF is defined based on the formula: SoF=(P−Pdemands)/(Pmax−Pdemands), where P is the power the battery can provide, P demands is the load power, and Pmax is the maximum possible battery power. Another method is the Terminal Voltage-Based Technique. SoF assessment is performed based on historical infor- mation and measured current data (voltage, SoH, maxi- mum voltage). This method can determine the battery's ability to sustain operation under the required load. SoH is an important indicator when using this method, as it deter- mines the rate of battery voltage drop. Battery Charging Stages. Сharging a lithium-ion battery most often occurs in three stages: the initial Pre-charge / Trickle Charge, the main CC (Constant Current), and the fi- nal CV (Constant Voltage). This ensures efficient and safe charging of the battery, generally in the traditional use case of new batteries. The Pre-charge stage is used for batteries that are deeply discharged, with the voltage across their terminals drop- ping below the permissible level. The key objective of this phase is to gradually restore the voltage to a level that al- lows for a safe transition to the main Constant Current (CC) charging stage. For this purpose, a small constant current is applied to the battery (e.g., 1/10th of the nominal current of the CC stage). This approach is a precaution that pre- vents damage to the internal structure of the battery, which could occur if a significant current were applied to deeply discharged cells. The Constant Current (CC) charging stage is the main and most prolonged stage. This stage allows the battery to be charged to approximately 80-90 % of its nominal capacity. The CC stage concludes when the battery voltage reaches the limit set by the manufacturer (e.g., 4.2 V for most types of lithium-ion batteries). The final stage uses the Constant Voltage (CV) mode, which prevents dangerous overcharging while ensuring the bat- tery is fully charged. In this stage, the voltage across the battery is maintained at the maximum permissible level specified by the manufacturer, while the charging current gradually decreases. As soon as the current drops to ap- proximately 3-5 % of the current used in the CC stage, the charging process automatically terminates. The CC-CV (Constant Current-Constant Voltage) charging protocol is effective for charging new batteries; however, for second-hand batteries, this method is suboptimal and may accelerate further degradation. This is due to several characteristic changes that occur in the battery over time: This is due to several characteristic changes that occur in the battery over time: 1. Increased Internal Resistance. The internal resistance of the battery increases over time, which is a consequence of two processes: the thickening of the Solid Electrolyte Inter- phase (SEI) layer on the anode and degradation changes in the structure of the electrodes themselves. 2. Premature Transition to CV Mode. Due to the elevated resistance, the voltage at the battery terminals reaches its upper limit much earlier during Constant Current (CC) charging. This causes the main charging phase to shorten, and the system switches to Constant Voltage (CV) mode when the battery hasn't yet reached the State of Charge (SoC) level a new one would have. 3. Prolongation of the CV Stage. Since the Constant Current (CC) phase becomes shorter, a larger portion of the charge accumulates during the Constant Voltage (CV) stage, signif- icantly increasing its duration. This prolonged exposure to maximum voltage is a severe stress factor for the battery. It not only accelerates cathode degradation but also stimu- lates the further growth of the SEI layer on the anode, which is particularly detrimental to second-hand batteries. 4. Increased Heat Generation. Higher values of internal re- sistance lead to greater heat dissipation during the flow of charging current, especially in the main CC phase. Conse- quently, the temperature rises, which is the starting point for many degradation processes [5]. The Constant Current-Constant Voltage (CC-CV) charging method is unable to adapt to the dynamic changes in bat- tery characteristics over the course of its operational life [6]. Therefore, it is appropriate to apply adaptive algo- rithms for charging second-hand batteries, as they account for these specific features and are capable of optimizing battery utilization. Such charging algorithms can modify charging parameters in real-time based on the measure- ment of current battery parameters and the use of histori- cal data, which helps to increase battery lifespan and en- hance operational safety [7]. Adaptive algorithms can be classified according to the methods used for adaptation decision-making: Rule- Based/Threshold-Based algorithms; Profile Analysis-Based (voltage/current profiles); Model-Based Algorithms; Data- Driven / Machine Learning (ML); and Adaptive Pulsed Charging. Algorithms operating on the Threshold-Based principle rely on predefined rules. Their logic involves the system moni- toring key parameters (voltage, current, temperature, etc.) and changing the charging conditions as soon as one or a group of parameters reach a specific limit. A typical rule is, for example, limiting the charging current or voltage upon overheating, or completely stopping the process when a dangerous temperature is reached [8, 9]. The algorithm can also be adapted to limit the maximum charging current de- pending on the battery capacity or its internal resistance. If the capacity has decreased or the resistance has increased, the maximum charging current can be reduced to prevent battery overheating [10]. Fuzzy Logic-based systems can be categorized under these algorithms. Algorithms that analyze the dynamics of voltage and cur- rent values operate by identifying key features on the graphs of these parameters using pre-known profiles. These characteristic points or features are associated with the battery's current state during the charging process. Based on the results of such analysis, the system intro- duces corrections to the charge parameters, for example, using the rate of voltage change (dU/dt) or the accelera- tion of voltage change (d2U/dt2) to determine the transi- tion points between charging stages [11]. These points can shift depending on the SoH. There are also algorithms that involve measuring internal resistance during charg- ing, and this information is used to adapt the charging process. Model-Based Algorithms utilize a mathematical model of the battery pack to predict the battery's behavior during charging. Battery state estimation (SoC, SoH, temperature, etc.) can be performed using state filters, such as the Kal- man filter. The model can adapt to battery aging through periodic parameter correction. Data-Driven Algorithms, including machine learning meth- ods, use accumulated information about charging cycles to dynamically adjust parameters. For instance, charging pa- rameters are optimized using neural networks or other models based on current battery state measurements [12]. Adaptive Pulsed Charging involves short current pulses whose parameters (amplitude, duration, frequency, and pause) change according to the battery's state. This method aims to reduce polarization—the deviation of the terminal voltage from the Open Circuit Voltage (Voc) during current flow—which potentially lessens cell degradation. This voltage deviation occurs due to internal processes within the battery that slow down the current flow and en- ergy conversion. In practice, hybrid methods that use elements from several algorithms are often applied. The goal of such a combina- tion is to increase the overall performance, reliability, and robustness of the system. For example, a Coulomb count- ing mechanism can be combined with voltage and temper- ature correction mechanisms. Another common example is the use of a Kalman filter for accurate battery state estima- tion, complemented by algorithms that make decisions based on rules or optimization models. Justification for the Selection of the Adaptive Charging Al- gorithm. Fuzzy Logic (FL) can effectively manage nonlinear systems without requiring a precise mathematical model [13]. For complex systems, such as lithium-ion batteries, where accurate modeling can be complicated, the applica- tion of fuzzy logic offers advantages. It allows for the inte- gration of linguistic variables and fuzzy sets, obtained ex- perimentally, into the automated control system [14]. Fuzzy logic controllers are generally robust against changes in system parameters and operating conditions. The use of symbolic fuzzy logic rules allows for the construction of fuzzy microcontroller structures with a human-like deci- sion-making process [15]. Unlike microcontrollers based on sharp/crisp rules (microcontrollers with hard logic) [16], this structure makes it easy not only to adapt the control system to specific requirements but also to successfully combine it with traditional control methods [17, 18]. The main advantages of using Fuzzy Logic (FL) for battery charging are: 1. Increased Efficiency and Reduced Charging Time. A fuzzy logic-based controller can optimize charging profiles, po- tentially reducing charging time compared to traditional methods while maintaining or improving efficiency. For ex- ample, [19] notes that fuzzy logic-based control can shorten charging time while achieving higher efficiency and lower temperature rise. 2. Extended Battery Lifespan. By managing charging param- eters such as current and temperature, a fuzzy logic-based controller can minimize stress on the battery, leading to an increase in its cycle life. 3. Enhanced Safety. A fuzzy logic-based control system can incorporate safety-critical rules to prevent overcharging, 72 Відновлювана енергетика. Overcharging can dam- age physical components, and even a single minute of over- charging can lead to battery failure. 4. Adaptability. Fuzzy logic-based systems can be designed to adapt to changes in the battery's state and environmen- tal conditions. [20] mentions that a fuzzy battery controller successfully achieves its charging and cell-balancing goals with high adaptability simply by adjusting the membership functions. All key battery parameters—voltage, current, temperature, and SoC—are interdependent. During the constant current phase, for instance, voltage increases along with SoC. Fur- thermore, the efficiency of the battery's charge absorption changes depending on its temperature and current state of charge. Therefore, for effective control, a fuzzy logic-based system must evaluate the parameters not individually, but collectively, considering all existing interrelationships. Thus, due to its flexibility and relative ease of understand- ing, which is based on ordinary human language, fuzzy logic is one of the most effective methods for controlling the charging process of second-hand lithium-ion batteries. Un- like currently known charging methods, fuzzy logic allows for the use of uncertain input data, can solve and combine contradictory tasks and goals, while also taking into ac- count the experience of expert systems and being based on classical control laws. Key Factors Affecting Battery Lifespan During Charging. The service life of lithium-ion batteries heavily depends on the charging conditions. Voltage, current, temperature, and State of Charge (SoC) play a critical role in the rate of deg- radation. Charging a battery to a high voltage (e.g., 4.2 V per cell) al- lows for maximum capacity utilization, but simultaneously places significant stress on the battery components. The cathode material is particularly sensitive to high voltage, where degradation processes such as metal dissolution, structural changes, and other transformations accelerate [21]. High voltage also promotes the oxidation of the elec- trolyte on the cathode surface [22]. Maximum voltage is, in fact, one of the key factors determining the rate of cathode degradation. Many studies show a direct correlation between maximum charging voltage and cycle life. Reducing the voltage even by a small amount can significantly extend the lifespan. For example, lowering the voltage from 4.2 V to 4.1 V per cell can double the number of cycles, and a further reduction to 4.0 V can double it again [23]. Research confirms accel- erated degradation at voltages above 4.0 V for certain bat- tery chemistries. The voltage considered optimal from the perspective of minimizing stress is around 3.90–3.92 V per cell, although this significantly limits the available capacity. For every battery type, there are critical voltage thresholds, and exceeding them is a key factor in the nonlinear nature of degradation. As soon as the voltage crosses this bound- ary, destructive processes, such as intensive dissolution of cathode metals or accelerated electrolyte oxidation, are significantly amplified. This is related to the electrochemi- cal properties of the materials. When the applied voltage exceeds a certain threshold, irreversible changes begin to occur in the battery. Therefore, maintaining the voltage be- low these critical values can extend the battery's lifespan. Influence of Charging Current. Although using high currents significantly reduces charging time, this approach carries risks that negatively affect the battery's longevity. Key is- sues include: 1. Lithium Plating. At high currents, the rate of lithium-ion influx to the anode can exceed the rate of their intercala- tion into the anode structure, especially at low tempera- tures, leading to the deposition of metallic lithium [24]. 2. Increased Temperature. The flow of high current through the battery's internal resistance causes significant heat generation, which can lead to overheating and the acceler- ation of other degradation mechanisms [25]. 3. Mechanical Stress. Rapid lithium intercalation into the electrode material creates internal pressure that can dam- age the electrodes or make them less elastic. Lower charging currents are often recommended to extend service life [26]. Studies identify charging current as a stress factor. The primary damage from high charging currents may be related not so much to the current flow itself under ideal conditions, but to its consequences, namely the tem- perature increase. Therefore, maintaining a safe tempera- ture and current range during fast charging is important for minimizing their negative impact. Influence of Temperature. Charging at elevated tempera- tures (above 30∘C, and especially above 60∘C) is one of the most damaging factors for lithium-ion batteries. High tem- perature sharply accelerates almost all undesirable chemi- cal reactions inside the cell: SEI (Solid Electrolyte Inter- phase) growth, electrolyte decomposition, and cathode degradation (including metal dissolution) [27]. Charging at low temperatures (below 0∘C) is also harmful. At low temperatures, the battery's internal resistance in- creases significantly, charging efficiency decreases, and the risk of metallic lithium plating on the anode sharply rises [28, 29]. The best charging conditions are a temperature range close to room temperature (20–25∘C). Charging within approxi- mately 5∘C to 35∘C is generally considered acceptable. Since both high and low temperatures accelerate degradation during charging, effective battery thermal management is critically important [30]. Influence of SoC Range. The way the battery's capacity is used significantly impacts its service life. Repeated cycles with full discharge (from 100 % to 0 % SoC) are more stress- ful for the battery than partial cycles within a narrow SoC range, especially if extreme values are avoided. Research shows that decreasing the depth of discharge ex- ponentially increases the cycle life. For example, using only 73 Відновлювана енергетика. 30 % of the capacity can increase the number of cycles by four times or more compared to 100 %. Limiting the maxi- mum SoC to 50 % can increase the expected lifespan by 44– 130 %. Charging in the extreme SoC ranges (e.g., 0–20 % or 80–100 %) can accelerate specific degradation mechanisms: imped- ance growth at low SoC and capacity loss at high SoC (espe- cially for NMC (Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt-Oxide) chemistry) compared to charging in the mid-range (e.g., 40–60 % SoC). High SoC is associated with high voltage, which stresses the cathode and accelerates electrolyte oxi- dation. Therefore, minimizing the time spent at high SoC levels is a beneficial strategy. Very low SoC can lead to over- discharge, which is also detrimental to the electrodes. Op- erating in the mid-SoC range avoids these extreme condi- tions. LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate, LiFePO4) batteries are less sensitive to being at 100 % charge. The stress on the cath- ode at full charge is much lower than in NMC. However, the 20–80 % charging strategy is useful for prolonging the ser- vice life of any type of lithium-ion battery. It is also recom- mended to periodically charge LFP batteries to 100 %. This allows the Battery Management System (BMS) to accu- rately calibrate the readings and correctly determine the state of charge. Adaptive Battery Charging Algorithm. The adaptive battery charging algorithm based on fuzzy logic includes the follow- ing main steps: problem definition; definition of linguistic variables and the fuzzy set, including its behavior; definition of the fuzzy inference mechanism; construction of the con- trol system itself and its verification; as well as the tuning process and determination of operational capability. The flexibility and adequate re- sponse of the system will depend on the external factors affecting its behavior, meaning the correlation between the linguistic variables and the physical base parameters. Small negative values may oc- cur during normal transitions between stages, while larger negative values may indicate malfunctions. 3. Current Charging Current: Measurement is necessary for feedback and for implementing the Pre-charge, CC, and CV modes. 4. Temperature: Critical for the battery's safety and health. Charging outside the permissible limits is harmful. 5. State of Charge (SoC): Determines how much charge is needed and influences the permissible current. 6. State of Health (SoH): SoH is an important variable, es- pecially for second-hand batteries, directly indicating the degree of degradation. A battery with low SoH may require lower maximum currents, a lower maximum voltage, or more cautious temperature management during charging. SoH estimation can be obtained using methods based on capacity measurement, internal resistance, or more com- plex algorithms. 7. State of Function (SoF): The state of function reflects an assessment of how well and safely the battery is able to perform its intended functions at the current time. 8. SoC Limitation Mode: The SoC limitation mode allows setting the upper and lower bounds of the SoC range. For example, to use the battery within 20–80 % of its capacity. This approach can significantly extend the battery's service life. 9. Time from Start of Charging: Tracking the time from the start of charging acts as a safeguard that limits the maxi- mum duration of the process. This time can also serve as a backup mechanism for switching between charge stages in case primary indicators (such as voltage or current) are mal- functioning. 10. Battery Type: Key charging characteristics depend on the battery chemistry: maximum charging voltage (LFP−3.6/3.65 V per cell, NMC−4.2 V), charging current (LFP−0.5–1C, NMC−0.5–0.7C), optimal SoC range (LFP−10- 100 %, NMC−20-80 %). 11. Final Charging Voltage: The fuzzy controller can adapt the final charging voltage to reduce stress on the battery and extend its service life. 12. Charging Current: The fuzzy controller modifies the maximum current depending on SoH, SoC, SoF, and tem- perature to optimize speed and safety. The minimum cur- rent in the Pre-charge and CV stages, upon reaching which the transition to the CV stage or the termination of charging occurs, is also considered. 13. Operating Mode: The fuzzy controller makes decisions regarding switching between different charging stages based on the combination of input variables. Description of the Adaptive Battery Charging Algorithm. The algorithm utilizes a Fuzzy Logic system to control the charging process. At each stage, 10 input parameters are determined: Battery Voltage; Voltage Change (dU/dt); Cur- rent Charging Current; Temperature; SoC; SoH; SoF; SoC Limitation Mode; Time from Start of Charging; and Battery Type. Based on this data and the fuzzy logic rule base, the con- troller determines the optimal values for three output con- trol variables: Final Charging Voltage; Charging Current; and Operating Mode (Pre-charge, CC, CV, Pause, Error). The charging process includes the following phases: Phase 1: Initialization. The system is activated after the battery is connected to the charger. An initial reading of all input parameters is performed, or the last known values are used. Safety Check: Temperature: If the temperature is "Critically Cold" (e.g., below 0∘C) or "Critically Hot" (e.g., above 40∘C), charging does not start until the temperature normalizes. The con- troller switches to "Error" mode. Voltage: If the initial battery voltage is "Critically High" (e.g., 4.2 V or higher per cell), this may indicate an error or that the battery is already charged. SoH/SoF: If the SoH is "Very Low" or the SoF is "Low", the controller limits the maximum charging current or issues a message about the need for additional diagnostics. After initialization, the controller determines the operating mode based on the initial conditions. Phase 2: Pre-charge. Phase Entry Condition: The charger enters the "Pre-charge" mode if the battery voltage is de- fined as "Critically Low" (e.g., below 3.0 V per cell). The charging current is set to a "Very Low" level (3 % of the cur- rent in the CC phase). The controller continuously monitors cell voltage, temperature, and dU/dt. Phase Exit Condition: The controller switches the system from "Pre-charge" to "CC" mode when the cell voltage reaches the "Low" level (e.g., 3.0–3.2 V), and the tempera- ture remains within safe limits ("Optimal" or "Cold"). Phase 3: Constant Current Charging (CC - Constant Cur- rent). Phase Entry Condition: The system transitions to "CC" mode from the "Pre-charge" phase, or immediately af- ter initialization if the cell voltage was not "Critically Low". The Optimal Charging Current is a dynamic value calculated by the controller based on a combination of parameters. For new batteries (High SoH) and under optimal tempera- ture, the system selects a High Current (0.5C−1.0C). How- ever, it is reduced if the temperature becomes too high or too low, or if the battery shows signs of wear (low SoH). The State of Charge (SoC) also influences the decision: the cur- rent may be higher at the beginning of the CC phase. Con- currently, the State of Function (SoF) acts as a priority lim- iting factor, forcibly reducing the current if indicators are low. At the same time, the controller determines the Target Final Voltage (e.g., 4.2 V), which may be lowered for sec- ond-hand batteries. Throughout this time, the system con- tinuously monitors voltage, current, temperature, SoC, dU/dt, and process duration. Phase Exit Condition: The controller concludes the Con- stant Current (CC) phase and transitions to the Constant 75 Відновлювана енергетика. Voltage (CV) phase when one of the key conditions is met. The first is the cell voltage reaching its Target Value ("High", 4.2 V). The second, alternative condition is a significant slowing of voltage rise (dU/dt approaches zero), which in- dicates battery saturation. There are also auxiliary factors, such as the temperature approaching the "Hot" state or the SoF dropping to "Low", which may accelerate this transi- tion. Phase 4: Constant Voltage Charging (CV - Constant Volt- age). Phase Entry Condition: The entry conditions for this phase coincide with the system's exit conditions from the CC phase. The controller maintains the cell voltage at the level determined by the controller as the "Final Charging Voltage". The charging current begins to decrease as the battery's internal resistance increases. The main task of the controller in the Constant Voltage (CV) stage is to maintain the set voltage level, although it can also set an upper cur- rent limit for safety, if necessary. Continuous monitoring in- cludes: charging current (decreasing), cell voltage (main- tained at the set level), dU/dt (approaching "Zero"), temperature, SoC (approaching "Very High"), and charging time. Phase Exit Condition: The controller switches the system from the Constant Voltage (CV) mode to "Pause" mode, sig- naling the completion of charging, when one of several con- ditions is met. This transition occurs when the charging cur- rent drops to a very low level (usually 3–5 % of the nominal current), the rate of voltage change (dU/dt) approaches zero, the State of Charge (SoC) reaches 95–100 %, or when the charging time becomes excessively long and other pa- rameters indicate completion. This approach prevents in- definite charging, which may occur due to battery peculiar- ities, and ensures an effective and safe cycle completion. Charging Completion / Pause. Phase Entry Condition: 1. The system enters this mode from the "CV" phase after the completion conditions are met. 2. It may also transition from any phase if the controller determines the need for a temporary stop. The controller sets the "Charging Current" to "Zero" and the "Operating Mode" to "Pause" and contin- ues to measure cell voltage and temperature in standby mode. The controller may also apply short-term top-up charging if the voltage drops below a certain level (e.g., 4.2 V/cell). Phase Exit Condition: 1. Battery disconnection. 2. User com- mand to continue/start a new cycle. 3. If the pause was temporary (e.g., due to temperature), the controller can automatically resume charging when conditions normalize, returning to the appropriate phase. Error. The controller initiates an emergency charging stop, switching the system to "Error" mode, under any critical conditions. These conditions include battery overheating (above 45–50∘C) or a voltage spike above a safe value (e.g., 4.25–4.3 V). The emergency mode is also triggered if the rate of voltage change (dU/dt) remains significantly nega- tive for a prolonged period, which may indicate a serious malfunction. Furthermore, an error is recorded if charging lasts too long without a proper increase in State of Charge (SoC) and voltage, indicating a defect in the battery or the charger itself. At every phase (especially CC and CV), the controller con- stantly evaluates the degrees of membership of all input parameters in their fuzzy sets (e.g., temperature may be 60 % "Optimal" and 40 % "Hot"). Based on this and the rule base, the controller generates the current and voltage out- put signals. This allows for a more accurate reaction to changes in the battery's state than traditional charging al- gorithms with fixed thresholds. For example, the current reduction due to a temperature increase will not be sharp but gradual, corresponding to how close the temperature is to the critical point. The figure presents the functional diagram of the adaptive battery charging algorithm. Conclusions. It is expedient to apply adaptive algorithms for charging second-hand batteries, as they take into ac- count their peculiarities, optimize utilization, and extend their service life. Such algorithms can modify charging pa- rameters (current, voltage) in real-time based on current battery parameter measurements and historical data. This helps to extend its lifespan. The application of Fuzzy Logic for developing adaptive con- trol algorithms for charging lithium-ion batteries is highly effective. Key advantages include: increased efficiency and reduced charging time, extended battery lifespan by mini- mizing stress, enhanced safety through the prevention of overcharging and overheating, and high adaptability to changes in battery state and environmental conditions. The developed adaptive algorithm using fuzzy logic incor- porates an optimization strategy for the charging process of used lithium-ion batteries. Charging to a high voltage ac- celerates degradation, and lowering the final charging volt- age can significantly extend the battery's service life. High currents can lead to increased temperature and acceler- ated degradation. Both high and low temperatures signifi- cantly accelerate degradation processes. The optimal tem- perature range is 20–25°C. Partial cycles within the mid- range are less stressful and significantly prolong the cycle life compared to a full discharge. Therefore, a useful strat- egy is to operate the battery within the optimal SoC range, such as 20–80 %, or, for instance, 40–70 % in situations where the full battery capacity is not required. The developed charging algorithm allows for a significant improvement in the efficiency, safety, and durability of sec- ond-hand lithium-ion batteries, which promotes their wider application in energy storage systems, including in re- newable energy, and contributes to a reduction in overall costs and a positive impact on the environment by decreas- ing the number of spent cells. The effective integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the power grid largely depends on energy storage systems, where second-life batteries are playing an increasingly important role.
