| description | The operation of a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) plant under periodic grid outages, when the sys-tem functions as a backup power source, has been investigated. The capability to support the load de-pends on the daily energy deficit determined by the balance between generation, consumption, and the discharge of the battery energy storage system (BESS). This deficit is typically compensated by the grid, but its ability to supply energy is limited by the duration and frequency of daily power interruptions, char-acterized by the outage density (OD) parameter. Based on monitoring data, a linear relationship between the energy deficit covered by the grid and the outage density has been established. Using the daily energy balance equations that describe energy exchange between the system components (PV modules, BESS, load) and the grid, the dependence of the required BESS capacity on OD was obtained for various battery charging power levels. It is shown that as OD increases, the required battery capacity must grow following an approximately exponential dependence. To optimize BESS capacity selection, a procedure is proposed to configure a reliable power supply for consumers under various outage conditions by adjusting the bat-tery charging process. A family of control characteristics was obtained, representing the dependence of charging power on OD for batteries with different nominal energies. |

Huawei SUN2000-5KTL-
Battery
Monitoring System (BMS),
Huawei SmartGuard-63A-S0 Backup

it i t= , ( )i id d t= .
вання on off = + .

PV grid bat load selfP P P P P+ + = + , (3)
(State of Charge)
, 0, 0PV load self grid batP P P P P + = (4)
, 0PV load self gridP P P P + (5)
, 0, 0PV load self bat gridP P P P P + = (6)
, 0, 0PV load self bat gridP P P P P + = (6)

( , ) 1 ( ) ( , ) ( , )grid self PV bat deficite n D e e n e n D e n D = + − − = . (11)

Abstract. The operation of a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV)
plant under periodic grid outages, when the sys-tem functions
as a backup power source, has been investigated. The
capability to support the load de-pends on the daily energy
deficit determined by the balance between generation,
consumption, and the discharge of the battery energy storage
system (BESS). This deficit is typically compensated by the grid,
but its ability to supply energy is limited by the duration and
frequency of daily power interruptions, char-acterized by the outage density (OD) parameter. Based on monitoring
data, a linear relationship between the energy deficit covered by the grid and the outage density has been
established. Using the daily energy balance equations that describe energy exchange between the system
components (PV modules, BESS, load) and the grid, the dependence of the required BESS capacity on OD was
obtained for various battery charging power levels. It is shown that as OD increases, the required battery capacity
must grow following an approximately exponential dependence. To optimize BESS capacity selection, a procedure
is proposed to configure a reliable power supply for consumers under various outage conditions by adjusting the
bat-tery charging process. A family of control characteristics was obtained, representing the dependence of
charging power on OD for batteries with different nominal energies.

Introduction and Problem Statement.
Power outages from electrical grids represent a serious and
widespread problem affecting many sectors of modern so-
ciety — including large-scale industry, small enterprises,
households, and critical infrastructure such as healthcare
facilities, transport systems, and communications networks
[1–4]. Planned and unplanned regular disconnections of
consumers from the grid have become systematic in
Ukraine during wartime conditions, when military attacks
are directed against critical energy infrastructure. Conse-
quently, there is an urgent need for the development and
deployment of backup power generation systems based on
renewable energy sources to ensure electricity supply
during outage periods. A promising approach involves the
creation of backup photovoltaic power plants (BPVPs) de-
signed to provide local consumers with energy at a suffi-
ciently reliable level.
To date, various aspects of this topic have been studied.
The main factor complicating the search for optimal solu-
tions for BPVPs is the stochastic nature of temporal varia-
tions in the input parameters — such as solar radiation,
hourly energy consumption profiles, and grid outage pat-
terns. Forecasting solar irradiance and load profiles, as well
as optimizing BPVPs under power outage conditions, was
addressed in [5]. In that study, the dimensions of the BPVP
were determined using the particle swarm optimization
(PSO) method, which balances generation, storage, and

consumption of energy while accounting for technical and
economic constraints.
The study [6] proposed an approach for optimizing the sizes
of photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems
(BESS) in a DC microgrid. In this case, load profile forecast-
ing based on historical data employed a deep learning
model with a long short-term memory (LSTM). In [7], a
method for determining the size of a BPVP during periodic
consumer disconnections from the grid was developed us-
ing generation–storage–consumption balance equations
for the most unfavorable calendar period. That study also
provided estimates of the loss-of-load probability (LOLP)
parameter as a function of outage density.
The use of BPVPs for a reliable household energy and hot-
water supply was discussed in [4], where forecasting,
power flow control, and hot-water temperature regulation
under unplanned grid outages were implemented using an
intelligent controller.
A considerable amount of research on BPVPs focuses on
the economic aspects of system design and operation. For
instance, [8] proposed an optimization method considering
the trade-off between total system cost and operational re-
silience under grid outage conditions. In [9], an optimiza-
tion method for the component composition of PV–BESS
backup systems was developed to minimize both capital ex-
penditures and electricity bills. The approach uses charac-
teristic outage and consumption profiles along with time-
of-use tariffs and real-time pricing, with the optimization
performed via mixed-integer linear programming (MILP).
The work [10] investigated the minimization of total system
cost over a 20-year operational period using real meteoro-
logical data, realistic residential load profiles, and grid out-
age schedules.
A significant portion of the total BPVP system cost is asso-
ciated with the battery energy storage system (BESS),
which compensates for mismatches between power gener-
ation and consumption while taking into account the oper-
ating characteristics of power sources (the BPVP and the
grid) and the nature of consumer loads [3, 5, 6, 8, 11]. Op-
timization of the total cost can be performed under the
constraint of maintaining a required level of supply reliabil-
ity [12, 13]. A detailed review of various BESS optimization
frameworks — accounting for stochasticity, computational
efficiency, and the dimensionality of the objective space —
is presented in [14].
It should be noted that a grid-connected PV system, when
also used as a backup power source, requires a thorough
analysis of its operating modes and an optimal configura-
tion of its components. This distinguishes it from simpler
backup solutions such as diesel generator (DG) units, which
operate in a single mode — activation during a power defi-
cit. The main advantage of a BPVP in such cases is the ab-
sence of fuel costs, since solar energy is a free renewable
resource, while the price of diesel fuel and the resulting
electricity is relatively high. This factor becomes especially
significant during prolonged grid outages. In addition, PV-
based systems meet environmental standards and require
minimal maintenance compared to DG units. However, de-
spite the disadvantages of DG systems, they are still
frequently integrated into hybrid PV–DG configurations to
ensure power supply during extended outages (especially
during blackouts) when the BESS is depleted and PV gener-
ation is insufficient to meet the load demand [15, 16]. To
reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, hybrid PV–DG sys-
tems often employ energy management strategies such as
load-following and cyclic battery charging, which also re-
duce the levelized cost of electricity [17].
In this work, the operation of a grid-connected BPVP is ex-
perimentally studied under conditions of forced, periodic
disconnections from the distribution network according to a
predefined schedule. This setup simulates grid failures under
planned outages, typically determined by the regional grid
operator. The research was conducted for various outage
densities (OD) and solar irradiance levels. The system’s load
was resistive and constant throughout all experiments to fa-
cilitate a clearer analysis of the relationship between three
output variables: the daily solar energy input, the required
BESS capacity, and the permissible outage density ensuring a
predefined reliability level of power supply.
Structure of the Backup Photovoltaic System
The general configuration of the investigated backup PV
power supply system is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The
system consists of the following major components:
1. Four bifacial photovoltaic modules (JA Solar JAM72D30-
555/GB, 555 Wt each) capable of generating electricity
from both the front and rear surfaces. This innovative de-
sign increases the overall photovoltaic conversion effi-
ciency by 10–20%, depending on installation specifics and
the reflectivity of the underlying surface.
2. Huawei SUN2000-450W-P optimizers for each PV mod-
ule, which track the maximum power point to improve the
efficiency of the entire PV array. The optimizers also pro-
vide protection in case of a malfunction and transmit real-
time performance data to the monitoring system.
3. Hybrid single-phase inverter (Huawei SUN2000-5KTL-L1,
rated at 5 kW) that integrates DC-DC and DC-AC converters,
high-frequency noise and EMI filters, and an output LCL filter.
It also includes surge protection devices against overvoltage.
The inverter’s internal monitoring system continuously ana-
lyzes the performance of all station components, their oper-
ating states, power flow between subsystems, cumulative
energy generation and consumption, and the state of charge
(SOC) of the battery. The inverter is equipped with multiple
protective features, including reverse-polarity, arc-fault,
overvoltage, and short-circuit protection.
4. Battery Monitoring System (BMS), integrated into each
storage unit, controls the charge/discharge processes and
communicates with the inverter via the CAN interface.
5. Two battery energy storage units (BESS) based on the
lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) chemistry (Huawei
LUNA2000-10-S0). These batteries accumulate surplus en-
ergy from the grid or the PV ar-ray. The total installed stor-
age capacity used during experiments was 10 kWh, with a
nominal volt-age of 450 V. Each unit consists of LiFePO₄
cells capable of operating within a wide temperature range
(–20 °C to +55 °C) and maintaining stable electrochemical

performance with low degradation (up to 6000 charge/dis-
charge cycles).
6. An intelligent backup switchboard (Huawei Smart-
Guard-63A-S0 Backup Box) supplies priority loads during
grid outages. Its built-in energy management controller au-
tomatically switches power from the grid to the battery and
maintains power to preselected essential equipment. The
switchboard collects data from meters, sensors, and cur-
rent transformers, compiles it into monitoring data, and
transmits it to the inverter via the RS485 interface. During
a grid outage, the transfer to backup power occurs within
20 ms, ensuring uninterrupted power to consumers.
7-8. Protective switchboards. The DC switchboard (7) is
manual switching device used to disconnect the circuit be-
tween the inverter and the PV system. The AC switchboard
(8) is intended for connecting and protecting the BPVP
equipment along the AC line. This switchboard houses the
switches for the grid input (1) and the load output (2), re-
spectively. These switches are designed for manual or au-
tomatic connection/disconnection and provide equipment
protection in cases of overvoltage, short circuits, or voltage
surges that may occur due to various switching operations
or natural factors such as lightning.
9. Wi-Fi socket for remote control of load connection to
the system.
10. Constant resistive load of 0.955 kW maintained
throughout the experiments to ensure stable conditions.
11. Smart single-phase Wi-Fi circuit breaker (TOMZN TOB9-
VAP 1-63A 1P) with real-time monitoring of power, voltage,
and current, enabling remote control of grid connection via
the Smart Life application.

where each interval on and off represents either the
availability of grid power supply or the disconnection of the
BPVP from the grid.
To analyze the experimental data, it is more convenient to
use discrete values denoted as di, representing the grid
state at the moment ti of each data record. These
monitoring data points, referred to as samples, were col-
lected at 5-minute intervals t =5, resulting in N=288 data
points per day. Numbering these five-minute samples with
the index i=1,2,…,N, we obtain: it i t= , ( )i id d t= .
The monitoring system FusionSolar of the studied BPVP
provides discrete averaged values of power flows and en-
ergy exchange between system components at each sam-
pling interval. During the experiments, the grid disconnec-
tions were programmed with constant duration and
periodicity throughout the day, characterized by the pa-
rameter OD and the corresponding period between inter-
ruptions on off = + . These parameters define the ratio

In all operating modes, the power balance of BPVP can be
described by the equality between the total supply and
consumption:
PV grid bat load selfP P P P P+ + = + . (3)
The supply side includes the PV generation, power ex-
change with the grid, and BESS, while the consumption side
consists of the load and the internal power needs of the
system. The relationship between these components is de-
scribed by the following balance equation:
PV grid bat load selfP P P P P+ + = + . (3)
The left-hand side of this equation represents the energy-sup-
plying components, while the right-hand side corresponds to
the consuming components. In (3) the following notations are
introduced: PPV is PV power, Pgrid and Pbat are power exchange
with the grid and the battery, respectively, Pload and Pself are
the load power and the system’s self-consumption power, re-
spectively. Furthermore, it is assumed that Pgrid > 0 and Pbat >
0 when the corresponding power flows are directed toward
the load, whereas Pgrid < 0 indicates power delivery to the grid,
and Pbat < 0 corresponds to battery charging. The battery’s
state of charge is denoted by the variable SOC (State of
Charge), expressed as a percentage.
Let us first consider the operating modes when the grid is
available (d = 0). Two main operating modes are observed:
Surplus generation mode. Under high solar irradiance,
when the PV power PPV exceeds the load demand Pload but
the batteries are not yet fully charged (SOC < 100%), the
surplus power is used to charge the battery. Any remaining
excess energy is exported to the grid. Under this operating
mode, the following conditions hold:
, 0, 0PV load self grid batP P P P P + = (4)
If the battery is fully charged, the surplus photovoltaic
power is supplied to the electrical grid, which corresponds
to 0, 0grid batP P = in equation (3).
Deficit compensation mode. When PPV is insufficient to
cover the load Pload, the power deficit is compensated by
importing electricity from the grid:
, 0PV load self gridP P P P + (5)
In this case, battery charging (Pbat ≤ 0) is also possible if it is
not fully charged.
Let us assume that the electrical grid is disconnected (d=1),
then the following modes will occur.
PV-supported charging mode. Under high solar radiation,
when the generated PV power exceeds the consumption of
the load and system electronics, the surplus is used to
charge the batteries if SOC < 100%:
, 0, 0PV load self bat gridP P P P P + = . (6)
Battery discharge mode. When photovoltaic power is lower
than the total demand of the load and system, the deficit is
supplied by the BESS, provided the state of charge remains
above the minimum allowable level. Once the battery is
fully discharged, the load can only be supported by real-
time PV generation, which limits the reliability of power
supply during extended outages.
These operating conditions were recorded and analyzed over
a full 24-hour cycle, including alternating periods of grid avail-
ability and disconnection. Fig. 2 illustrates the temporal dy-
namics of the power generation PPV (blue), the load consump-
tion Pload + Pself (red), the grid exchange Pgrid (orange) as well
as the state of charge when SOC < 100% (green).

where the following notations are introduced for the en-

the BPVP during the i-th time interval; Egrid,I— the energy
exchanged with the grid (Egrid,I > 0 for power consumption
from the grid); Ebat,I — the energy supplied to the load
from the battery (Ebat,I > 0) or the energy used for battery
charging (Ebat,I < 0), Eload,i and Ebat,i — the energies con-
sumed by the load and by the system equipment, respec-
tively.
Let us proceed to the dimensionless energy variables by di-

,

This implies the scaling of the calculation to any ratio of

equation is obtained in the following form:

The variable PVe does not depend on the grid operation
mode (the set of parameters { }id ). The consumption com-
ponent selfe , in a first approximation, can also be consid-
ered independent of di. The two components on the left-
hand side of equation (9), ( ({ })bat ie d і ({ })grid ie d , are
significantly dependent on { }id . The right-hand side of
equation (9) represents the total daily energy deficit (or
surplus). When the energy generated by the BPVP does not
cover the consumption demand (right-hand side < 1), the
deficit is compensated by the centralized electrical grid
(term ({ })grid ie d ). If the grid is “absent,” the energy is
supplied by the battery (term ({ })bat ie d ). At the end of
the day, the battery returns to the same state as at the be-
ginning of the day, provided that ({ }) 0bat ie d = . Thus,
the lack of energy in the system for PVe <1, which may oc-
cur over the course of a day, is compensated by the grid (
({ }) 0grid ie d ). However, the magnitude of gride
strongly depends on the disconnection mode, i.e., on the
set of parameters{ }id , and naturally on the OD: the
greater the value of D, the less energy can be supplied by
the grid.
Experimental Conditions
Measurements and calculations of all components of the
energy balance equation (9) were carried out for the stud-
ied BPVP at various values of the outage density D. Each ex-
perimental day began with a scheduled grid disconnection
interval. The connection-disconnection periods were rela-
tively short (two hours), so the influence of their placement
(yellow bars in Fig. 2) relative to the local maxima of gener-
ated power was considered negligible. The analysis of the
experimental data was performed using an energy balance
model in which the full set of system parameters { }id was
reduced to a single variable — the outage density D. This
allowed the energy balance at the end of the n-th day to be
expressed in a simplified form
( , ) 1 ( ) ( , ) ( , )grid self PV bat deficite n D e e n e n D e n D = + − − = . (11)
The left-hand term of this balance represents the amount
of energy drawn from the grid to meet the consumer de-
mand ( 0gride ) or, conversely, delivered to the grid
( 0gride ). This quantity compensates for the deficit
caused by insufficient photovoltaic generation and bat-
tery discharge and is denoted as the deficit energy
( , )deficite n D .
By solving the balance equation (11), the relationship be-
tween the possible outage density and the given energy
deficit for the load was determined. It is more convenient
to establish this relationship graphically (see Fig. 3), based
on monitoring data obtained from the BPVP inverter. Each
data pair ( , )deficitD e corresponds to one experimental day
with a specific value of D. A linear regression (blue line) fit-
ted to the experimental points demonstrates good agree-
ment, characterized by a root mean square error (RMSE) of
0.057 and a coefficient of determination R² = 0.814.

Fig. 3. Dependence of the energy deficit required to meet the load demand ( , )deficite n D on the outage density for differ-
ent observation days (n) at a battery charging power of 1 kW
The analysis of the obtained graph (Fig. 3) shows that more
frequent or longer grid outages are acceptable when a
smaller energy deficit is observed at the consumer side. In-
deed, the greater the PV generation and the capacity of the
BESS that supply the load, the less energy is required from
the grid. Therefore, the dependence presented in Fig. 3 can
be interpreted as follows: as D increases (i.e., as the grid
connection time decreases), the portion of the load de-
mand covered by the grid becomes smaller. Thus, the linear
relationship shown in Fig. 3 reflects both the consumer’s
energy demand from the grid and the grid’s ability to satisfy
that demand during the day.
Statistical properties of daily generation
The daily energy deficit that must be compensated by the
backup system depends on the ratio of cumulative PV gen-
eration to daily consumption. Therefore, to model and de-
sign a BPVP, it is essential to know the statistical character-
istics of its power output during the daytime generation
period. As an example, the distribution function (DF) and
the probability density function (PDF) of PV power output
variation during the day were obtained for the summer pe-
riod based on monitoring data recorded at 5-minute inter-
vals (Fig. 4). The interval estimation was carried out over
0.079 kW segments.
It should be noted that the shapes of these functions differ
from those of solar irradiance due to the hardware limita-
tion of the inverter’s maximum output power (1.74 kW2,
right side of the graph) and due to a reduction in power
generation at low solar altitudes caused by partial shading
from nearby buildings (in this case, a neighboring university
facility). The latter effect corresponds to the left-hand side
of the graphs. As a result, higher PDF values occur both at
low BPVP power outputs and near the upper power limit of
the inverter.
Fig. 4. Cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probabil-
ity density function (PDF) of PV power (PPV) during the
summer observation period. Dots represent interval esti-
mates based on 5-minute monitoring data
The energy stored in the battery must be sufficient to meet
consumer needs during periods of low solar irradiance.
Therefore, when determining the required BESS capacity,
one must take into account potential decreases in solar ra-
diation and energy production lasting several days. In this
work, these effects were evaluated using the Moving Aver-
age (MA) to capture the trend in daily energy generation
over periods ranging from three days to one week. So, we
used the expression various data averaging windows:

The moving-average profiles (MA3, MA5, and MA7) are
shown in Fig. 5. As the averaging window increases, the MA
curves become smoother, while the estimates over longer
intervals become statistically more reliable. In capacity as-
sessments, the weekly moving average (MA7) was taken as
the reference (red line in Fig. 5).

Calculation of the parameters and charging mode of the
battery
The daily MA7 profile was further used to model the daily
generation values ePV,i, through which the daily changes in
the battery energy were calculated as follows:

pch — battery charging power from the grid (in units of
Pload); Pch — charging power, kW; Ich — charging current, A;
Vbat — battery voltage, V.
During unfavorable periods, the total energy supplied by
the BESS — initially fully charged — should not exceed the
energy corresponding to its maximum allowable depth of
discharge. A graphical illustration of this process is
shown in Fig. 6, where the maximum discharge period is
indicated by shading. The position of the zero-energy
line ( 0bate = ) depends on the outage density D and the
charging power pch.
Fig. 6. Smoothed variation curve (MA7) of battery energy over the observation period. The shaded area indicates the in-
terval of maximum battery discharge ( 0bate ). The zero level ( 0bate = ) corresponds to D = 0.4, pch = 1
The lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) battery pack used in
the study had a nominal voltage of 450 V and a total en-
ergy capacity of 10 kWh (22.2 Ah). According to the man-
ufacturer’s specifications, the maximum recommended
charging current does not exceed 0.5C. Therefore, the
charging current can be regulated via the battery manage-
ment system (BMS) within a wide range — up to approxi-
mately 11 A, corresponding to a maximum charging power
of 5 kW.
The total energy of the longest discharge period makes it pos-

kW∙h is calculated as , ,bat nom bat nom loadE e E= . In Fig. 7, the
results of the BESS capacity calculations according to (15)
for different charging rates pch are shown.
Fig. 7. Family of curves showing the dependence of the required nominal battery energy on the outage density for differ-
ent charging power levels: 1 − pch = 1; 2 − pch =1.2; 3 − pch =1.4; 4 − pch =1.6;
5 − pch =1.8; 6 − pch =2.0
The required battery capacity increases approximately ex-
ponentially with the outage density D. The slope of the
curves in Fig. 7 depends on the charging power pch: with
higher charging power, the curves
, ( )bat nome D become
steeper. Moreover, the higher the charging power, the
greater the outage density at which the system can still sup-
ply the consumer with electricity. For the experimental load
of about 1 kW, the charging power should range from 1 to
2 kW for the curves labeled 1–6. Thus, by adjusting the
charging current, it is possible to ensure a reliable power
supply under varying outage conditions.
Based on the experimental data, a quantitative depend-
ence ( )chp D was derived, allowing the construction of
control characteristics for the battery charging process
(Fig. 8). Each curve in the graph corresponds to a specific
battery capacity (expressed in units of daily energy con-
sumption) and indicates how the charging power should be
adjusted depending on the grid outage regime.
For example, suppose the nominal battery energy equals
half of the daily load (ebat, nom = 0.5), and the system is con-
figured for an outage mode of D = 0.4, i.e., for charging with
pch = 1. In the case of transitioning to a mode with D = 0.7,
an energy deficit for load supply will occur, which can be
compensated by increasing the charging power to pch = 2,
according to the graph in Fig. 8 (green curve).
Discussion and Conclusion
A study was carried out on the operation of a grid-con-
nected backup photovoltaic power plant (BPVP) with an in-
stalled capacity of 2.2 kW in order to assess the feasibility
of using the system as a backup power source during regu-
lar outages of the centralized power grid. The experiments
were conducted under different modes of periodic discon-
nections during the summer months, characterized by the
outage density parameter in the range of D = 0.45 – 0.68.
Throughout the experiments, a constant resistive load of
0.955 kW was maintained. Analysis of the collected data in
terms of the energy exchange balance among the system
components at 5-minute intervals allows the following ob-
servations and conclusions to be made.
Fig. 8. Family of control characteristics pch(D) for the bat-
tery-charging process with different nominal battery ca-
pacities (expressed in units of daily energy consumption)
When the daily energy generation of the BPVP is lower than
the daily electrical load, an energy deficit edeficit (n, D) oc-
curs, which is compensated by energy supplied from the
grid. However, the grid’s ability to cover this deficit is lim-
ited by the frequency and duration of outages (defined by
the parameter D). The smaller the energy deficit, the higher
the value of D at which the system can reliably support the
load. For example, when the relative energy deficit equals
0.9, the BPVP can operate reliably at D = 0.46; when the
deficit decreases twofold, to 0.45, the load can be sus-
tained even at D = 0.68. This relationship of edeficit (n, D) fol-
lows a linear regression, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
To ensure more stable operation of the BPVP under high lev-
els of solar irradiance, the inverter’s maximum AC output
power was limited to 1.74 kW. Consequently, the distribu-
tion function of inverter power differs from that of solar irra-
diance. Based on 5-minute monitoring data, the cumulative

distribution function (CDF) and probability density function
(PDF) of photovoltaic power generation (PPV) were deter-
mined (see Fig. 4). During the summer operational period, a
higher probability of both low and high PPV values was ob-
served — near the boundaries of the (0; 1.7) kW interval.
The required parameters of the BESS were calculated as a
function of grid outage density. The daily energy generation
was modeled using a moving-average smoothing of cumu-
lative monitoring data (ePV, Fig. 5). A family of curves was
obtained showing the dependence of the required nominal
battery energy ebat, nom(D) on the outage density for differ-
ent battery charging power levels (Fig. 7). It was demon-
strated that ebat, nom increases approximately exponentially
with increasing D.
It has been shown that reliable operation of the BPVP under
various outage regimes (parameter D) can be ensured by ad-
justing the charging power (or current) of the BESS through
the BMS. The following input data are required for this ad-
justment: a weekly moving-average profile of daily PV gener-
ation, the daily load profile, the daily outage density, and the
specified BESS parameters (nominal capacity and depth of
discharge). The study also presents a method for deriving the
corresponding control characteristics, illustrated in Fig. 8.

The operation of a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) plant under periodic grid outages, when the sys-tem functions as a backup power source, has been investigated.
