| description | The increase in the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources (RES) in the balance of the electric power system (EPS) makes the problem of determining power and energy losses in electrical networks caused by electricity flows from RES particularly relevant. This issue is especially significant for balancing groups formed on the basis of RES, as well as for their gradual transformation into aggregated groups and for individual RES units acting as aggregators.
Tracing electricity flows from RES and assessing their consequences (including energy losses, impact on power quality, transmission line capacity, etc.) constitute an essential component of the interactions between aggregators and other participants of aggregated groups, including consumers who are motivated by guarantees of origin of electricity.
The paper proposes a method for determining the component of power and energy losses attributable to RES within the total losses of electrical networks. The method is based on a matrix mathematical model of the electrical network, which enables the determination of power flows in network branches and the associated losses. A matrix of current distribution coefficients in network branches from nodes with RES, as well as nodal voltages, is determined. As a result, a matrix of power loss distribution coefficients in the network branches and branch power flows is formed as a function of nodal power injections.
It is shown that the values of energy losses in electrical networks caused by RES can be used in the operational planning of electricity balances in the EPS. Since these losses are addressable, their cost can be appropriately considered in the financial settlements between aggregators.
The paper presents the results of steady-state calculations for the IEEE 14-bus test system with two voltage levels and multiple energy sources, including RES. To verify the adequacy of the proposed method, steady-state calculations were also performed using the PowerFactory software package. The obtained results confirm the validity and adequacy of the developed method. |

S = 3 ×U M × Iв дΣд Σ (4)
спричинений потужністю вузлів з ВДЕ;
тужностей вузлів, що відповідають вузлам схеми з ВДЕ;
вузла;

ΔS = V SΣвi i (7)
де
-1
i t Σi i дV =(U M )C U .
вi i j j
iÎθ jÎθН ВД
ΔS = V S = v s + v sΣ i i (8)

Power Factory.

Abstract. The increase in the share of electricity generated
from renewable energy sources (RES) in the balance of the
electric power system (EPS) makes the problem of determin-
ing power and energy losses in electrical networks caused by
electricity flows from RES particularly relevant. This issue is
especially significant for balancing groups formed on the ba-
sis of RES, as well as for their gradual transformation into
aggregated groups and for individual RES units acting as ag-
gregators.
Tracing electricity flows from RES and assessing their consequences (including energy losses, impact on power
quality, transmission line capacity, etc.) constitute an essential component of the interactions between aggrega-
tors and other participants of aggregated groups, including consumers who are motivated by guarantees of origin
of electricity.
The paper proposes a method for determining the component of power and energy losses attributable to RES
within the total losses of electrical networks. The method is based on a matrix mathematical model of the electrical
network, which enables the determination of power flows in network branches and the associated losses. A matrix
of current distribution coefficients in network branches from nodes with RES, as well as nodal voltages, is deter-
mined. As a result, a matrix of power loss distribution coefficients in the network branches and branch power flows
is formed as a function of nodal power injections.
It is shown that the values of energy losses in electrical networks caused by RES can be used in the operational
planning of electricity balances in the EPS. Since these losses are addressable, their cost can be appropriately con-
sidered in the financial settlements between aggregators.
The paper presents the results of steady-state calculations for the IEEE 14-bus test system with two voltage levels
and multiple energy sources, including RES. To verify the adequacy of the proposed method, steady-state calcula-
tions were also performed using the PowerFactory software package. The obtained results confirm the validity
and adequacy of the developed method.

Introduction and Problem Statement
The intensive integration of renewable energy sources
(RES) into the Integrated Power System of Ukraine (IPS of
Ukraine) poses new challenges. These challenges are pri-
marily associated with the insufficient adaptability of elec-
trical networks within the electric power system (EPS) to
the operation of power plants based on renewable energy
sources characterized by intermittent generation, as well as
with the inadequate level of network automation.
On the other hand, the variability of RES generation, caused
by its dependence on natural conditions, leads to a de-
crease in the operational efficiency of electrical networks
and deterioration in the quality of electricity supply ser-
vices provided to consumers. The variability of operating
modes of photovoltaic power plants (PVPPs), as well as
wind power plants (WPPs), negatively affects the balancing
reliability of the power system and its overall stability.
Ensuring the balance of power and electrical energy within
the power system is possible through the integrated

utilization of available flexible generation capacities, in par-
ticular, thermal and hydroelectric power plants. However,
due to various factors—both natural and those related to
the destruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by the
Russian Federation—the available flexible capacity is cur-
rently insufficient.
As for modern technological solutions (electrochemical en-
ergy storage systems, hydrogen technologies, biogas tech-
nologies, coordination of generation and consumption
schedules, etc.), they remain largely prospective and are at
different stages of development and implementation
within electric power systems.
It is necessary to create favorable conditions not only for
the further development of renewable energy sources
(RES) within electrical networks of the power system, but
also for their optimal operation, while minimizing their neg-
ative impact on the technical and economic performance
indicators of the power system.
Depending on the point of RES connection to electrical net-
works and their installed capacity, reductions in electricity
transmission losses may be achieved; reliability indices
such as SAIFI and SAIDI may be improved; and significant
enhancements in power quality, as well as in the overall en-
ergy efficiency of the electricity supply system, may be at-
tained [1–4].
However, the potential of RES to improve the technical and
economic performance of the power system is offset or
substantially reduced by the necessity of maintaining costly
reserve capacity within the power system to compensate
for the variability of electricity generation from solar and
wind power plants.
During the operation of renewable energy sources (RES)
within the electric power system (EPS), the problem of bal-
ancing electricity consumption and generation is ad-
dressed, taking into account all energy sources in the sys-
tem. The complexity of this task lies in the probabilistic
nature of both consumption and generation within the EPS.
In the case of RES, when forecasting the day-ahead hourly
generation schedule, it is also necessary to account for the
variability in their power output depending on time and
meteorological conditions.
The participation of RES in EPS balancing is further compli-
cated by the fact that, despite their relatively small individ-
ual capacities, they are geographically dispersed across all
regions of the country, characterized by different meteoro-
logical conditions. Their number amounts to thousands and
continues to increase. Therefore, in order to ensure effec-
tive management of this process, RES are grouped into sep-
arate balancing groups, for which aggregated forecasted
hourly generation schedules are determined and submitted
to the State Enterprise «Guaranteed Buyer» [5, 6].
This approach proved effective for several years; however,
it currently requires further improvement. This necessity is
associated with the transition in RES generation planning
from the «feed-in tariff» mechanism to their participation
in the EPS through auction-based mechanisms
To enhance the efficiency of RES integration into electrical
networks under the new market conditions, a number of
challenges must be addressed. A fundamental shift is re-
quired away from the incentive mechanism based on re-
ducing discrepancies between forecasted and actual hourly
RES generation schedules through penalty sanctions im-
posed by the Guaranteed Buyer. The cost of forecast errors
may reach 20% or more of the revenue obtained under the
feed-in tariff scheme.
Therefore, a new mechanism for supporting RES within the
electric power system is required. Such a mechanism can
be effective only if accompanied by improvements in pro-
prietary forecasting methods and the establishment of effi-
cient balancing groups. One such form is an aggregated
group, defined as an association of small-scale producers,
energy storage units, active consumers, and other decen-
tralized energy resources for joint participation in the elec-
tricity market.
Participants in an aggregated group may include consumers
capable of adapting their loads in response to aggregator
decisions, thereby contributing to system balancing
through peak load reduction or load shifting. Energy stor-
age systems may also act as participants, providing ancillary
services to the Distribution System Operator (DSO), partic-
ipating in system balancing, and supporting network oper-
ation. Other decentralized energy resources, including hy-
brid systems (generation + storage + consumption), electric
vehicle charging stations, and similar assets, may also be in-
tegrated into aggregated groups.
Thus, in order to enhance the efficiency of RES in electrical
networks under new operating conditions, it is necessary
to: determine appropriate methods and means for reserv-
ing their generation; improve forecasting techniques for es-
timating electricity output volumes of RES-based balancing
groups and develop a methodology for determining the op-
timal composition of balancing aggregated groups of RES
producers; establish local electric power systems (LEPS)
and microgrids based on RES as a means of decentralizing
electricity generation; and develop intelligent control sys-
tems for LEPS (microgrids) capable of self-restoration of
power supply.
These tasks are inherently optimization problems and re-
quire comparative assessment of alternative solutions
based on technical and economic performance indicators.
Since RES utilize general-purpose electrical networks, the
primary evaluation criteria include their impact on network
operating parameters, such as the transmission capacity of
individual power lines and interconnection transformers, as
well as the overall energy efficiency of networks integrated
with RES (including reliability, technical electricity losses,
and power quality).
To assess the operational performance of electrical net-
works with RES, including LEPS and microgrids, an integral
indicator has been proposed, enabling comparative evalu-
ation of different electricity transmission and distribution
system configurations with the determination of general-
ized technical and economic indicators [7].
However, for a number of specific tasks—such as ensuring
guarantees of origin of electricity for consumers in the con-
text of decarbonization, as well as securing successful par-
ticipation of RES in auction-based mechanisms—it is
19

necessary to determine optimal transmission paths (power
flow tracing) for delivering electricity generated by RES
with acceptable technical losses of energy and voltage.
The objective of this paper is to establish the conditions for
the optimal integration of renewable energy sources (RES)
into aggregated balancing groups. To this end, the network
branches that supply electricity generated by RES to con-
sumers are identified, and the corresponding power and
energy losses in the electrical network are determined.
Optimal Control of Power and Energy Balance in Electrical
Networks within a Balancing Group Framework. Today, it
is particularly relevant to optimize the operating modes of
renewable energy sources (RES) in order to minimize devi-
ations from the day-ahead hourly schedule of aggregated
generation for the balancing group РRES(t), subject to speci-
fied constraints on primary energy resources and the tech-
nical characteristics of RES:

units and gas turbine units).
As the share of RES capacity and electricity generation in
the electric power system (EPS) increases, their responsibil-
ity for imbalances also increases [5, 6]. In particular, this
concerns the formation of day-ahead hourly RES
generation schedules with reduced forecast errors.
For this purpose, in (3), Pi(t) is determined taking into ac-
count the degradation of RES equipment [7–9], and optimal
electricity flows from RES and energy storage systems (ESS)
with minimal losses in the electrical network are identified
[10–12]. As a component of the overall balance equation,
losses caused by electricity flows from RES and ESS are de-
termined [13].
In general, Fig. 2 presents the conditions for regulating re-
sponsibility for electricity imbalances within the EPS, high-
lighting the need to improve RES participation in the system
balancing framework.
The following section demonstrates how, in the process of
EPS balancing, the distribution of RES power across the
branches of the electrical network is determined and how
the corresponding losses due to RES power flows are calcu-
lated.

Power Distribution Coefficients of Network Nodes Across
Electrical Network Branches and Power Loss Distribution
of RES Generation in Network Branches. The value of ap-
parent power at the beginning and at the end of each net-
work branch is determined by the following expression:
nb ΣD Σ DS = 3 ×U M × I (4)
where UΣD – the diagonal matrix of nodal voltages, includ-
ing the balancing nodes; ΣM – the branch-to-node inci-
dence matrix, including the balancing (slack) nodes; DI –
the diagonal matrix of branch currents (hereinafter, the su-
perscript denotes the complex conjugate of a matrix or
vector).
In [11], the components of power in the electrical network
branches attributable to nodal power injections are deter-
mined:
NB RES RESS =DS (5)
where NBRESS – the vector of branch power flows caused
by the power injections at nodes with RES; RESS – the vector
of nodal powers corresponding to the network nodes with
RES; -1D = (U M )CUD Σ D – the matrix of coefficients indicat-
ing the share of the total power in each branch caused by
the power flow from each node;
-1 -1 -1
NB Σt Σ NB ΣtC=z M (M z M )
– the matrix of distribution of injected currents at the nodes
Jacross the network branches; NBz – the diagonal matrix
of complex impedances of the network branches;
Accordingly, the vector of total losses in the electrical net-
work branches can be written as follows [13]:
NB ΣΔS = V × S (6)
where -1
t Σ DV =(U M )CU – the matrix of power loss distribu-
tion coefficients in the network branches as a function of
nodal power injections; t t ΣDU =n U – the transposed vec-
tor of nodal voltages, including the balancing (slack) nodes;
nt – the transposed unit vector;
The expression for power losses in a given i-th branch from
(6) can be rewritten as follows:
NBi i ΣΔS = V S (7)
where
-1
i t Σi i DV =(U M )C U .
Together with the determination of the magnitude and
origin of electricity flows in the network branches calcu-
lated according to (5), the power losses in a given branch
(or branches) of the electrical network caused by the flow
of electricity from RES are determined using (7). For this
purpose, the row vector Vi of the loss distribution matrix V
is computed, with nodal voltages refined in accordance
with the corresponding nodal power values in the network,
and the individual components of power losses are deter-
mined. Losses are calculated separately for load power and
generation power:
NBi i j j
iÎθ jÎθL RES
ΔS = V S = v s + v sΣ i i (8)
where v – the elements of the row vector iV ; s – the ele-
ments of the nodal power vector ΣS ; Lθ і RESθ – the sets
of load nodes and RES nodes, respectively. The set of RES
nodes RESθ may consist of one or several nodes, depending
on whether the losses in a given branch are determined for
a single RES unit or for a group of RES units.
Power and Energy Losses from RES Flows in an Aggregated
Balancing Group. For the gradual transition of RES to ag-
gregated balancing groups, as well as for individual RES
units acting as aggregators, certain conditions must be ful-
filled. In order to participate in auctions, the declared elec-
tricity generation schedules must take into account net-
work losses, since consumers motivated by guarantees of
21

origin will require assurances not only regarding the origin
of electricity but also its delivered quantity. The optimiza-
tion of electricity losses is closely related to the problem of
tracing RES power flows while considering transmission line
capacity constraints and power quality requirements.
When determining the power output and electricity losses
from renewable energy sources (RES), it is necessary to
take into account the specific operational characteristics of
RES in electrical networks and the variability of their gener-
ation. Due to their dependence on natural conditions
throughout the day, RES power output varies over a wide
range—from zero to installed capacity. Photovoltaic power
plants (PVPPs) operate only during daylight hours and fol-
low a non-uniform generation profile. The output of wind
turbines depends on wind speed, which also continuously
varies (see the generation profile in Fig. 3). Consequently,
the electricity supplied and the associated losses caused by
power flows from PVPPs and wind power plants (WPPs) in
electrical networks also vary over time. This variability must
be considered when assessing the forecast error of electric-
ity generation and consumption. As illustrated in Fig. 3, an
example of a daily forecast profile Ppv is shown, which rep-
resents the expected power delivery from the WPP as as-
sumed by the consumer. In practice, the consumer receives
an actual power Pav from the WPP according to metering
data. The forecast error for the consumer is defined as: Pav-
Ppv. If transmission losses in the electrical network associ-
ated with delivering Ppv to the consumer are taken into ac-
count, the error is adjusted accordingly. If the electricity
consumer is an active participant (active consumer), such a
reduction in the forecast error is significant, similar to its
importance for an aggregator.

over all network operating modes during the considered

where ΔP(t) – the approximated profile of power loss var-
iation over the time period T; iΔP – power losses assumed
to be constant over time iΔt ; n – the number of intervals
into which the loss variation profile is divided ΔP(t) (if
iΔt = Δt = const , then n = T / Δt ).
The choice of which expression in (9) is applied depends on
the problem formulation and data availability. In this study,
we consider the day-ahead electricity balancing problem
for EPS operating modes, assuming that remote measure-
ments of operating-state parameters are available for all
nodes of the electrical network. In this case, the RES gener-
ation profiles are forecasted and known RESS (t) and the ac-
tual values of RES electricity generation are also available
from the commercial metering system (AMR/ASCAE) for
the time intervals Δt. The values of ΔP(t) are determined
based on the forecasted profiles of active and reactive
power P(t) and Q(t) at the RES nodes. For example, for the
i-th wind power plant (see Fig. 3), the electrical energy
losses are determined as follows:

Example
To illustrate the proposed method for determining RES
electricity flows in network branches and the associated
losses, the IEEE 14-bus test system is used. This system
comprises two voltage levels, 230 kV and 110 kV (see Fig.
4). Photovoltaic and wind power plants with installed ca-
pacities of 15 MW and 20 MW, respectively, as well as an
energy storage system (ESS), are integrated at buses 6 and
8. In accordance with the proposed algorithm [13], a data
set was formed and the matrices of nodal power distribu-
tion coefficients across the electrical network branches, D,
and the matrices of RES generation power loss distribution
in the network branches, V, were calculated. In addition,
the electrical energy losses in the network branches caused
by power flows from the photovoltaic power plant (PVPP)
and wind power plant (WPP) were determined.
As an example of a consumer interested in electricity gen-
erated from RES, the load connected at bus No. 9 was se-
lected.
Fig. 4. Electrical Network Scheme
23
For comparison, steady-state calculations of the network
were performed both without RES and with RES at 12:00,
considering the corresponding load and generation levels.
The total power losses without RES amount to 10.12 MW.
For the consumer connected at bus No. 9, with a load of
27.95 MW, the power flows in the branches incident to this
bus were determined as follows: P4-9 = 27.53 MW, P7-9 =
10.99 MW, P9-10 = -3.20 MW, P9-14 = -7.36 MW. Figure 5 pre-
sents the matrix of nodal power distribution coefficients
across the electrical network branches, D, according to
which, based on (5), power flows were recalculated for the
same nodal loads with RES generation enabled (P6 =15 MW,
P8 =20 MW) In particular, the power flows in the branches
incident to bus No. 9 are: P4-9 = 22.71 MW, P7-9 = 15.27 MW,
P9- 10 = - 2,88 MW, P9-14 = -7.16 MW.
As a result of RES generation, the power flows in the net-
work branches have changed. The power contributions in
the branches supplying the consumer at bus No. 9 have also
been modified. No power from the photovoltaic power
plant (PVPP) is delivered to the consumer at bus No. 9,
whereas 15.27 MW, or 54.6%, is supplied from the wind
power plant (WPP).
Figure 6 presents the matrix of RES generation power loss
distribution coefficients in the electrical network branches,
V. Based on this coefficient matrix and according to (6), the
power losses at 12:00 were determined to be 6.59 MW, and
a diagram of network losses without and with RES was con-
structed (see Fig. 7). At 12:00, the power losses in the net-
work with RES decreased by 10.12 −6.59=3.53 MW, which
corresponds to a reduction of 34.88%. According to the di-
agram in Fig. 7, assuming that 3.53 MW represents the
maximum loss reduction and that the period of maximum
losses lasts 6–7 hours, the daily reduction in electrical en-
ergy losses due to RES generation amounts to approxi-
mately 23 MWh.
With regard to the consumer at bus No. 9 and other con-
sumers motivated to receive electricity generated from
RES, it is evident that the hourly day-ahead generation
schedules of RES and the electricity consumption schedules
must be mutually coordinated.
In order to minimize the discrepancy between forecasted
generation and consumption profiles and their actual val-
ues, it is necessary to account for electricity losses during
transmission. For this purpose, a loss diagram similar to
that shown in Fig. 7 is calculated.
As illustrated in Fig. 3, the deviation between forecasted
and actual profiles may be minimal. Under conditions of ris-
ing energy resource prices and energy shortages, the mini-
mization of losses and accurate accounting of addressed
(traceable) electricity consumption acquire strategic im-
portance.
Therefore, the application of the proposed algorithm for
determining electricity losses and the implementation of
intelligent power flow control systems in distribution net-
works with RES are essential for the justified commerciali-
zation of the electricity supply process.

Conclusion
The increasing share of electricity generated from renewa-
ble energy sources (RES) within the electric power system
(EPS) makes their utilization in EPS balancing processes par-
ticularly relevant. This is caused by factors such as the de-
pendence of RES power generation on natural conditions,
the insufficient availability of flexible generation capacity in
the EPS to compensate for RES generation variability during
balancing, the transition in the electricity market from
feed-in tariff schemes to auction-based participation, and
the shift from balancing groups operating under the Guar-
anteed Buyer framework with penalty mechanisms to ag-
gregated balancing groups and independent aggregators.
Improving the energy efficiency of RES utilization within the
electric power system requires a more thorough
25

assessment of their impact on the technical and economic
parameters of electrical networks.
One of the key indicators characterizing the impact of RES
on the economic efficiency of electrical network operation
is the level of electricity losses, in particular, the losses
caused by power flows from RES, which are taken into ac-
count when selecting participants of aggregated groups.
The feasibility of applying a method for determining net-
work losses based on a mathematical model utilizing a ma-
trix of RES generation power loss distribution coefficients
in electrical network branches has been demonstrated. The
values of electricity losses in electrical networks caused by
RES can be used in operational planning of the electricity
balance in the EPS. Since these losses are addressable, their
cost can be appropriately compensated by aggregators,
which makes their further commercialization feasible and
economically justified.
Determining the volume of electricity received by consum-
ers from RES is necessary to confirm its origin, thereby en-
hancing consumer attractiveness and enabling the produc-
tion of goods with green labeling. According to the
proposed method, the share of electricity consumption of
a specific consumer supplied from a renewable energy
source connected to the electrical network is determined.
The method is based on a mathematical model for calculat-
ing the power distribution coefficients of renewable energy
sources in electrical network branches. The performed cal-
culations and the analysis of their results confirm the posi-
tive impact of RES on the operating conditions of the distri-
bution electrical network under predefined conditions. The
obtained results were validated using the IEEE 14-bus test
system through a matrix-based method and confirmed by
computer simulations performed in the PowerFactory soft-
ware environment.

Styskal, T. renewable energy sources, electricity flows, electrical energy losses, balancing group, aggregation. The increase in the share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources (RES) in the balance of the electric power system (EPS) makes the problem of determining power and energy losses in electrical networks caused by electricity flows from RES particularly relevant.
