Chemistry, Physics and Technology of Surface| Zusammenfassung: |  Lime production is one of least studied fields of craftsmanship in Ancient Rus. Owing to the recent years’ excavations in the central part of potters’ posad at ancient Vyshhorod, two stoves for lime burning were studied. Ceramic material found in them can be dated mainly by the 12th century. The authors managed to establish after a thorough analysis of archival materials that one more similar object was discovered nearby in 1936.
Lime in the largest number was necessary in Ancient Rus city for the needs in monumental stone building. The construction of the Sts. Borys and Hlib church and burial vault with which the discovered stoves should be related was finished at this very time in Vyshhorod. After the building was finished, one of the objects described seized its functioning, while two other were adapted into potter’s furnaces. A series of features allow the authors to suggest that craft of the population of posad in Vyshhorod was of votchyna nature. |
