«Biopolymers and Cell » journal is 30 years old! Du-
ring this period there have been over 2.200 publica-
tions, including about 260 reviews, 1.670 articles and
160 short communications, the rest being updates,
information about scientifi c events, reviews of books
and textbooks, creative portraits of scientists, etc.
The journal was founded by full member of NAS
of Ukraine, Professor Gennadiy Kharlam pie vych
Matsuka and his team; it was due to his professional
contacts, organizational skills and outstanding per-
sonal qualities that the very fi rst issues of
«Биополимеры и клетка» drew well-known scien-
tists from many renowned scientifi c centers of the
Soviet Union to the circle of editors, reviewers, and
authors, thus high quality and interesting publica-
tions could capture the attention of vast readership.
During these 30 years the journal has publi shed
the works, written by scientists of 45 countries of the
world: Ukraine, Russia, France, the USA, the United
Kingdom, Sweden, Belarus, Poland, Aust ria, Germa-
ny, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Swit zerland, Turkey, India,
Pakistan, SAR, Italy, Latvia, Brazil, the Netherlands,
Romania, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bosnia
and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Hungary, Serbia, Geor-
gia, Greece, Finland, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam,
Lebanon, Moldova, Puerto-Rico, Lithuania, Estonia,
Bulgaria, Japan, Belgium, Taiwan, Australia.
Since 2003 Professor A.V. El’skaya, full member
of NAS of Ukraine, has been the editor-in-chief of the
journal; it was her initiative and persistent work that
drove the creation of the journal website in English in
2006, where the original publications in Ukrainian and
Russian were placed alongside their English transla-
tions. In 2008 the journal accepted the suggestion of
Google Inc. to digitize the whole full-text archive of the
journal, starting with the fi rst issue of 1985, and it was
gradually added to the website for free access.
At present one of the main places of searching for
scientifi c information is Internet, but, taking into ac-
count the abundance of various, sometimes not reli-
able sources of information therein, scientists are de-
termined to work with «verifi ed» aggregates of scien-
tifi c literature, which are committed to responsible
selection of the indexed publications. That is why it is
so important for a journal to be present in some scien-
tometric and reference databases. As of now, the jour-
nal is indexed in Scopus, Elibrary, Goo g le Scholar,
DOAJ, Medical Jo urnal Links, EBSCO, HI NARI, Ul-
rich’s Periodicals Directory, Dzhe relo, VINITI. The
nearest plans are to have the journal en listed in MED-
LINE and to obtain Impact Factor from Thomson
Reuters. Currently we have had a good index of Cites
per Doc. 2013 (2y) = 0.417, estimated by SCImago
Journal & Country Rank with the formula of the im-
pact factorTM (Thomson Reuters) using the Sco pus-
indexed materials. Taking in to account the fact that
Scopus covers about 22 thousand publications, while
Thomson Reuters – only 12.500, it may be considered
that Cites per Doc is a more precisely estimated index
compared to Impact Fac torTM. There are many diffi -
culties concerning the citation of Cyrillic publications,
especially when their titles offi cially are only in Ukrai-
nian (or Russian) with no offi cial ISSN-attributed
names in English. While citing, readers often translit-
erate the title in their own discretion which makes it
completely impossible to calculate the number of cita-
tions. For instance, until 2009 the journal had fi ve
variants of names: two offi cial names according to the
registration certifi cate in Russian and Ukrainian –
Био полимеры и клетка, Біо по лі ме ри і клітина –
and three mo re: two transliterations from Russian and
Ukrainian: Biopolimery i klet ka, Biopolimery i klity-
na, and a translation: Biopolymers and Cell – gener-
ated by the authors. Certainly, there is no database,
required to determine the number of citations of such
an amount of name variants of one single journal.
Therefore, in 2009 the journal was offi cially re-regis-
tered as Biopolymers and Cell with the offi cial abbre-

viation of Biopolym. Cell. Taking the opportunity, we
would like to turn the attention of our authors to the
requirement of using this very name while citing.
Respecting the demands of some international
databases, since 2009 the reference list at the end of
the article is printed in English only, with translitera-
tion used in some cases.
In 2012 the collaboration agreement with Cross Ref
was signed and during 2013 all the articles, published in
the journal for all these years, were given the digital ob-
ject identifi er (doi) which allows fi nding the electronic
document even if the website has been restructured and
the hyperlink to it has changed. Since 2014 there has
been a new website of the journal in three languages
which expanded the readership of the journal consider-
ably, reaching over 50.000 site visitors.
Many disputes of the editorial meetings were
related to the issue of the most appropriate language
to publish the articles. Taking into consideration the
fact that English is the common language of the
world science, gradually the share of articles, pub-
lished in English, has been increasing, and sin ce
2014 all the articles are published in English only. It
has ensured the increase in the number of both au-
thors and readers; it also allowed inviting outstand-
ing scientists of other countries to the editorial board.
Now half of editorial board members are specialists,
working in the scientifi c institutions of France, the
USA, Poland, Japan, the United Kingdom, Latvia,
Belarus and the Russian Federation.
All the materials, submitted for reviewing, are
considered either at the editorial board meetings or
by the editor, responsible for a specifi c section, and
there are two appointed independent reviewers, who
are professionals in this sphere. Taking into account
their recommendations and remarks, the article is either
sent for follow-up revision, or rejected; also the third
reviewer may be appointed in ambiguous cases. We
gradually transfer from the single-blind scheme of re-
viewing (when the reviewer has a possibility to fi nd out
the name of the author and the institution, where the
work has been conducted, but the authors are not in-
formed as to who reviews their work) to the double-
blind scheme (neither authors nor reviewers are dis-
closed). The fi nalized variant of the manuscript, recom-
mended by reviewers for print and checked for the ab-
sence of any plagiarism, is considered by the editorial
board and approved for print in the specifi c issue. The
journal follows the international standards of format-
ting our publications: since 2010 a structured abstract is
required for experimental articles, and since 2014 the
reference list is formalized using Vancouver reference
style. We are committed to adhering to the bioethical
norms of conducting experiments and legal require-
ments concerning the copyright. We use modern tech-
nologies to prepare, issue, distribute and advertise the
journal. The latest interesting feature is the possibility
to subscribe to the direct e-mail notifi cation about the
content of new issues. It allows readers to be the fi rst to
read the materials of the issue as soon as it is on the
website for free access. Since 2015 we have started our
cooperation with Akamedperiodyka Publishing House,
so we expect the improvement of the print quality of
our issues. On the occasion of our 30th anniversary we
would like to thank everyone who has been giving his
or her intellect, time and inspiration to develop «Biopo-
lymers and Cell» during these years!
