Autorul încearcă să surprindă reprezentările corporale aşa cum sunt ele structurate în două comunităţi rurale şi în una urbana. Este o cercetare calitativă care urmăreşte un set de problematici, între care amintim: topografia externă a corpului uman; materiile corporale; excreţiile. În plus, lucrarea are ambiţia de a pune în contact, pe problematicile amintite mai sus, discursul ţăranesc (a doua jumătate a secolului al XIX-lea) tocmai pentru a evidenţia cum interacţionează cele două culturi.
