The Croatian ethnology and in folklore studies have arised and function as a part of two institutes – the Croatian Academy of sciences and arts and Маtica Croatian. The perfect structures of Academy and Маtica wake developed and provided the first substantial rise in the forming of the Croatian ethnology and folklore studies, the Department of ethnology of the Philosophical faculty in Zagreb, the former Institute of researches of folk lore, presently the Institute of ethnology and in folklore studies in Zagreb, ethnographic museums and collections, and also other important institutes of humanitarian and social disciplines. The breaking points in their development lies in the last fourth of XIXth century, when both institutes one of their major tasks – to collect as many ethnologic and folk issues as possible. Hrvatska etnologija i folkloristika rođene su u okrilju dviju institucija, Hrvatske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti i Matice hrvatske. Razvijeni institucijski okviri Akademije i Matice omogućili su prvotni znanstveni uzlet hrvatske etnologije i folkloristike, ali se težište strukovnog razvoja tijekom 20. stoljeća premjestilo u druge znanstvene ustanove, današnji Odsjek za etnologiju Filozofskog fakulteta u Zagrebu, Institut za etnologiju i folkloristiku u Zagrebu), etnografske muzeje i zbirke i druge institucije humanističkih i društvenih disciplina. Prijelomni trenutci u njihovu razvoju odvijali su se u zadnjoj četvrti 19. stoljeća kada su ove institucije postavile kao jedan od svojih važnih zadataka prikupljanje što veće količine etnološkog i folklorističkog gradiva.
