Surface| Summary: | A calculation has been carried out of the electric field created by the orientation-structured monolayer of polar molecules near the surface. The square lattice of dipoles oriented like the CO/NaCl(100) structure is examined as an example. A substantial difference is shown between the electric fields of a dipole monolayer and a single polar molecule: the electric field of a monolayer decreases exponentially when the distance from the surface increases, while the field of a single molecule decreases by a power law. The results obtained may be used for an analysis of the adsorption interactions screened by a monolayer of polar molecules, and for the calculations of spectroscopic characteristics of the adsorbates taking into account polarization effects in the substrate. |
