Surface| Summary: | A procedure has been developed for synthesis of new polysiloxane xerogels with propionic and butyric acid-type groups. The procedure is based on the sol-gel method and involves the conversion of 2-cyanoethyItriethoxysilane (or 4-(triethoxysilyl)butyronitrile) to an ester with its subsequent hydrolytic polycondensation reaction. The conversion proceeds under mild conditions and requires a gaseous HCl and the presence of tetraethoxysilane, Si(OCjHs)4. The IR and I3C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy studies showed that some carboxylic groups were converted to an ester as ^fti(CHi)2 or sC(0)0C2Hs using this procedure. Nitrogen adsorption analysis indicated that the resulting samples possessed pores on the borderline between micro- and mesopores (average micropore width was equal to 2.1-2.2 nm) and exhibited high BET specific surface areas (370-680 m2/g). |
