Description
Summary:The wetting properties of the flat Au(111) surface modified by alkanethiols with different functional groups (–СH3, –OH, –COOH) and dithiols with different chain lengths have been studied aiming to achieve a certain degree of hydrophilicity of the carrier. The contact angle on the water/support interface was sensitive to the type of terminal groups of molecules self-assembled on the gold surface. We observed decrease of contact angle value with increasing of the polarity of terminal groups from 104° for –СH3 to 22° for –COOH. Also we have revealed that the wetting angle of the surface can be varied as dependent on the morphology of monolayer adsorbed on gold surface. In case of short 1,4-butanediol molecules, as evidenced by STM, the monolayer on Au(111) surface has a low level of self-organization leading to lowering of contact angle in comparison with the monolayer formed by 1,9-nonanditiol molecules.
