Summary:The generalized curves, characterizing change with depth of macrobenthos biomass and meiobenthos abundance in the Black Sea and which were received by putting together and averaging the data of different surveys have been analyzed. The peak of macrobenthos is located at the depth where Chamelea community dominates, and after getting to maximum biomass smoothly decreases to zero. Abundance of meiobenthos has the main maximum at 120 m depth and second peak at 160 m. These peaks are connected with peculiarities in nematodes distribution, while small polychaeta attributed to the hypoxic zone also contributed considerably to appearance of the second peak. The peak at the 160 m depth depicts location of the optimal zone of some meiobenthos species, preferring hypoxic conditions near the boundary of the hydrogen sulfide column.
