The typical defects of XLPE insulation which result from the production, design, laying and operation of the cables are shown and explained. The causes of damages and defects of the insulation are analyzed. The significance of electrical operating conditions of the cable and the need to use non-destructive testing methods for the long service life of XLPE insulation are revealed.
