description The purpose of this article is to analyze the electrical characteristics of a photovoltaic module with a solar radiation concentrator. The object of the study is a simple commercially available photovoltaic module with the simplest solar radiation concentrator without additional cooling systems, which makes this solution technically simple and commercially attractive. The task is to evaluate the technical feasibility of such a solution. The study provides comparative characteristics of the dependence of power on voltage and monthly electricity generation of the mentioned concentrator system compared to a traditional solution – a set of photovoltaic modules connected in series. To assess the impact of the concentrator itself on the characteristics of the module, a comparison with a certain idealized solution is also made. As a conclusion, the feasibility of solar energy concentrators with conventional photovoltaic modules is demonstrated, since despite a 35% drop in electricity generation per unit area, the cost of such a solution is expected to be lower, because one module with a concentrator will be able to generate as much energy as 8 modules without radiation concentration. Author for correspondence: Kuznietsov Mykola, e-mail: kuznietsov.m.m@gmail.com Abstract. The purpose of this article is to analyze the electrical characteristics of a photovoltaic module with a solar radiation concentrator. Bibliography 14. Keywords: renewable energy sources, solar power plant, solar radiation concentrator, electricity generation forecast. List of symbols and abbreviations used PV module – photovoltaic module MPPT – max power point tracker Introduction Concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies occupy a sig- nificant position within the broader field of solar energy. Nevertheless, these technologies have been primarily ori- ented toward the generation of thermal energy [1, 2] and hybrid thermal–photovoltaic systems [3, 4], while substan- tially less attention has been devoted to purely photovol- taic applications. In such cases, preference is typically given to the implementation of high-efficiency solar cells [4–7] in combination with forced cooling systems [8]. The use of commercially available, standard single-junction crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules equipped with solar radiation concentrators has received comparatively limited consider- ation. Given that the cost of photovoltaic electricity re- mains higher than that derived from fossil fuels, it is in- creasingly important to identify technical solutions capable of reducing the capital cost of photovoltaic power plants. Employing solar concentration in conjunction with existing commercially available photovoltaic (PV) modules repre- sents a promising pathway, as the cost per unit area of sim- ple optical concentrators – such as Fresnel lenses or para- bolic concentrators – appears to be lower than that of the PV modules themselves. Objective The objective of this study is to conduct a comparative anal- ysis of the electrical characteristics of a typical photovoltaic module equipped with a solar radiation concentrator and those of an array of analogous photovoltaic modules whose total area is equivalent to the aperture area of the concen- trator. This comparison will subsequently enable techno- economic assessments of the feasibility of such systems. As a representative PV module, the A10Green Technology A10J-S72-175 model with a nominal power of 175 W is se- lected. The investigation of the specific design features of individual types of solar concentrators lies beyond the scope of this work; however, given the concept of using a low-cost photovoltaic module, the optical characteristics of the concentrator are chosen to correspond to the simplest available configurations – namely, a Fresnel lens or a para- bolic concentrator. Calculation of the Solar Radiation Concentrator A natural limitation for a PV module operating with a solar concentrator is the temperature of the PV cell. A typical maximum operating temperature for such modules is 85 °C. To estimate the maximum solar radiation for a single Ph.D. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0286-5652 Institute of Renewable Energy, NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine 142 Відновлювана енергетика. № 4/2025 | Сонячна енергетика photovoltaic module, a simple linear approximation is used [9,10]: 𝑇 = 𝑇𝑎 + 𝐺 𝐺𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 (𝑇𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇 − 𝑇𝑎,𝑁𝑂𝐶𝑇) (1) where T is the module temperature (⁰С) at solar irradiance G (W/m2) and ambient temperature Ta (⁰С); TNOCT is the nominal operating cell temperature specified by the manu- facturer; GNOCT = 800 W/m2 and Ta,NOCT = 20 ⁰С correspond to the nominal terrestrial environment (NTE) conditions. The optical efficiency of concentrators based on Fresnel lenses or a simple parabolic concentrator is approximately 70% [7]. Although existing technologies can achieve con- centrator optical efficiencies of 84 – 98% [7, 11], their techno-economic suitability for use with conventional pho- tovoltaic modules appears questionable. The selection of a concentrator must consider the local so- lar irradiance at the installation site. In this study, the cli- matic conditions of Kyiv city in 2019 are used: the maximum recorded irradiance was 918 W/m2, and the highest ambi- ent temperature reached 35 ⁰С [12]. As noted above, with- out forced cooling, the module temperature must not ex- ceed 85 ⁰С. Substituting a typical value of TNOCT = 25 0С and Ta = 35 0С into Equation (1), the maximum permissible irra- diance Gmax on the module surface that does not lead to overheating is obtained: 85 = 35 + 𝐺𝑚𝑎𝑥 800 (25 − 20) → 𝐺𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 8000(𝑊/𝑚2) (2) Since this work does not focus on concentrator design de- tails, only two parameters are treated as essential: the solar concentration ratio X, expressed in “suns” [13], and the ge- ometric concentration ratio Cg [7]: 𝑋 = 𝐺𝑥 𝐺 , 𝐶𝑔 = 𝐴 𝑎 , (3) where Gx is the average concentrated irradiance, G is the average non-concentrated irradiance, A is the concentrator aperture area, and a is the receiver area (the cross-section of the concentrated radiation beam). For the climatic conditions described above and consider- ing Equation (2) and the concentrator’s optical efficiency of 0.7, the concentration ratio must not exceed X=8000/918=8.71 suns, and the corresponding geometric concentration ratio should not exceed Cg = 8.71/0.7 = 12.44. A concentration ratio of X = 8.71 falls within the range of low-concentration photovoltaic systems, for which standard crystalline silicon solar cells are suitable [13]. To simplify the subsequent comparative analysis, a concentra- tor with a geometric concentration ratio of Cg = 12 is se- lected, meaning that the concentrator aperture area equals the total active area of twelve identical photovoltaic mod- ules operating without concentration. Comparison of the Electrical Characteristics of a Single PV Module with a Concentrator and an Array of PV Modules A comparative analysis is presented below for the electrical characteristics and energy generation of a single photovol- taic module equipped with a concentrator with a geometric concentration ratio Cg = 12 and an optical efficiency of 0.7, and of an array consisting of twelve identical PV modules. In both cases, the total active area is the same. From an electrical connection perspective, the twelve modules can be arranged in various configurations that primarily affect nominal voltage and current values; however, the total nominal power remains unchanged. A series configuration is selected as the most common arrangement. The following figures present the families of power-voltage characteristic curves for the two mentioned configurations under various solar irradiance and temperature conditions. The photovoltaic module considered is the A10Green Tech- nology A10J-S72-175 with a nominal power of 175 W. The characteristics were obtained through simulations con- ducted in MATLAB/Simulink. The “PV Array” block from the “Simscape” library was used to model the PV modules in all the cases. The model accounts for the dependence of mod- ule temperature on irradiance, as given in Equation (1). The solar concentrator was modeled with a geometric concen- tration ratio of Cg = 12 and an optical efficiency of 0.7, cor- responding to a solar concentration factor (number of suns) of X = 8.4. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the maximum output power of the twelve-module array is generally approximately twice that of the single module equipped with a concentrator. Moreover, the lower the temperature and irradiance, the smaller the difference between the power of the concen- trating-module configuration and that of the module array. This behavior is explained by both optical losses in the con- centrator and degradation of PV module performance at el- evated temperatures. To evaluate potential loss reductions, Fig. 3 presents the power characteristics of a module equipped with a concen- trator having an optical efficiency of 0.95 – representative of the most advanced existing solutions [7, 11] – and em- ploying a cooling system that maintains the module tem- perature equal to that of a non-concentrating module un- der the same irradiance and ambient temperature conditions. It can be observed that the performance of such an enhanced concentrator-based system is significantly better than that of the previously considered concentrator configuration; however, it still underperforms the module array at high irradiance levels and approaches the array performance only at low irradiance. It is also noteworthy that the slope of the power curve at the maximum power point is flatter for the module with a concentrator. This reduces the accuracy requirements for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system and may potentially decrease losses associated with non-opti- mal operating-point detection. Fig. 1. The following configura- tions were examined: 1) a PV module with a concentrator having a geometric concentration ratio of Cg = 12 and an optical efficiency of 0.7 (X = 8.4 suns), without a cooling system (hereafter referred to as the “low-efficiency con- centrator”); 2) a PV module with a concentrator having a geometric concentration ratio of Cg = 12 and an optical ef- ficiency of 0.95 (X = 11.4 suns), combined with a cooling system that compensates for the thermal effects of in- creased irradiance (the “high-efficiency concentrator”); 3) an array of twelve photovoltaic modules connected in se- ries. The module model corresponds to the A10Green Technol- ogy A10J-S72-175. Climatic data for the simulation were ob- tained from [12] and include hourly direct normal irradi- ance value s on a horizontal surface and ambient temperatures for the geographic coordinates of Kyiv city in 2019. The results are summarized in Table. Table. Furthermore, the lower the ambient temperature and irradiance, the higher the relative effec- tiveness of the PV module with a concentrator. It can be estimated that a module equipped with a conventional (low-efficiency) concentrator produces approximately the same amount of energy as eight identical non-concentrat- ing PV modules. Thus, the energy yield per unit of active area for a simple concentrator without supplemental cool- ing is roughly 1.5 times lower than that of an array of pho- tovoltaic modules with the same total active area. Although financial assessments fall outside the scope of this work, it is reasonable to assume that, given the adoption of a sim- ple, low-cost concentrator without a cooling system, such a configuration may be considered viable in applications where installation cost is of greater concern than available surface area. Conclusion The use of a standard commercially available photovoltaic module equipped with a solar concentrator with approxi- mately 0.7 optical efficiency and a geometric concentration ratio of 12 yields energy comparable to that of eight identi- cal non-concentrating modules. This configuration does not require a cooling system and employs a concentrator aper- ture area equivalent to the overall active area of twelve analogous photovoltaic modules. Consequently, the energy generation per unit area drops by approximately 35%; how- ever, the installation cost is expected to be significantly lower due to the comparatively low cost of the concentra- tor. In addition, the flatter slope of the output characteris- tics for the module with a concentrator reduces the accu- racy requirements for maximum power point tracking 145 Відновлювана енергетика. (MPPT) and decreases the potential power losses arising from suboptimal operating point detection. When a concentrator with optical efficiency comparable to the best current technology is employed, together with a cooling system capable of maintaining reduced module temperatures, the resulting energy generation is only about 10% lower than that of an array of photovoltaic mod- ules. Nevertheless, the commercial feasibility of such a so- lution is difficult to assess due to the increased complexity of the concentrator and the required cooling infrastructure. REFERENCES 1. The purpose of this article is to analyze the electrical characteristics of a photovoltaic module with a solar radiation concentrator. Bibliography 14.
