description A comprehensive mathematical model of the electromechanical system of a small hydropower plant has been substantiated for the purpose of investigating its energy efficiency under varying parameters: the opening degree of the axial guide vane apparatus, the current frequency of the induction generator, and the static head. A methodology for conducting numerical experiments aimed at studying the domain of effective application of frequency control of turbine-generator units has been developed. The search for optimal operating conditions is carried out according to the criterion of maximum energy efficiency—the ratio of generated power to water consumption—determined from the steady-state operating parameters obtained by solving the system of differential equations of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equilibrium until the steady state is reached, with consideration of the mutual influence of system components and the nonlinearity of their equations. The first stage of the numerical experiment is intended to determine the optimal values of the asynchronous generator current frequency variation under constant static head. It is shown that the expediency of applying frequency control to turbine-generator units increases as the operating point approaches the boundary of the turbine’s energy-efficient operating region. The second stage of the numerical experiment is related to identifying the conditions for efficient operation of the hydropower plant with frequency control under a natural flow regime. It has been determined that, under optimal frequency control modes, water discharge is reduced, thereby increasing the reservoir water level and, consequently, the hydropower plant's energy output. A specific case study demonstrates that, in natural flow conditions, the application of frequency control resulted in a 53% increase in generated power.

A methodology for conducting numerical experiments aimed at studying the do- main of effective application of frequency control of turbine-generator units has been developed. The first stage of the numerical experiment is intended to determine the optimal values of the asyn- chronous generator current frequency variation under constant static head. It is shown that the expediency of applying frequency control to turbine-generator units increases as the operating point approaches the boundary of the turbine’s energy-efficient operating region. The second stage of the numerical experiment is related to iden- tifying the conditions for efficient operation of the hydropower plant with frequency control under a natural flow regime. Keywords: small hydropower plant, simulation model, electromechanical system, dynamic mathematical models, steady-state operating modes, energy efficiency, frequency control. List of symbols and abbreviations HPP – hydro power plant; TA – turbine assembly; IG – induction generator; ηT – turbine efficiency; EMS – electromechanical system; H – static head; Qg – flow rate; Pe – generated power; f – frequency; Рg – heating losses of the IG; a0 – opening of the axial guide vane apparatus Small-scale hydropower in Ukraine [1–5] utilizes water re- sources that are an essential component of other produc- tion sectors and significantly affect the environment. Under these conditions, the energy volume produced alone can- not determine the optimal operational regime of hydroe- lectric reservoirs. The selection of such a regime should be based on comprehensive efficiency criteria, taking into ac- count multiple influencing factors [6]. This comprehensive assessment requires specialized studies and corresponding tools to determine the operational parameters of hydroe- lectric power plants (HPPs), which may substantially devi- ate from the project-design optimal values. Determining an effective strategy for water resource utili- zation requires a comparative evaluation of the outcomes of different organizational approaches. In particular, it is es- sential to maintain a balance between achieving maximum energy efficiency and minimizing water-level fluctuations in the reservoir, in order to prevent ecological issues and en- sure stable operation of other technical systems dependent on water level [7–11]. Examples of such systems include water intake facilities for municipal water supply and solar energy installations located on the water surface. The de- ployment of floating solar panels on reservoirs is justified by several factors: improved cooling for higher energy 1 Dr. of Science (Tech.) https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9238-5782 2 Cand. of Science (Tech.) https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5250-6981 1, 2 Institute of renewable energy, NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine; Institute of Electrodynamics, NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine 257 Відновлювана енергетика. № 4/2025 | Гідро-воднева енергетика efficiency, availability of large flat surfaces, and reduced water heating, which minimizes evaporation losses and mitigates negative impacts on the aquatic biocenosis. Operation of HPPs under natural flow regimes often results in significant deviations of turbine performance from its op- timal state. To improve this performance, it is advisable to develop and justify additional regulation methods [12, 13], including frequency control of turbine-generator units [14, 15]. This approach increases the dimensionality of the parameter space for searching optimal operational set- tings. In modern practice, numerical optimization meth- ods—such as gradient-based approaches and global search algorithms (genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimiza- tion, etc.)—are widely used for evaluating the energy effi- ciency of complex technical systems. However, when ana- lyzing small-scale HPPs modeled using complex nonlinear representations of turbines, induction generators, and hy- draulic systems, these methods may not always be practi- cal. Specifically, due to the complex model structure char- acterized by discrete parameters, strong nonlinearity, and the absence of analytical expressions for objective function gradients, automated optimization methods often prove either unstable or computationally inefficient. In this context, the present work employs a brute-force search method for extremum identification, which has practical applicability [16]. A stepwise manual optimization approach has been implemented—systematic iteration through possible combinations of variable parameters, fol- lowed by analysis of their impact on the energy efficiency criterion. This approach enables a reliable and controlled search for the domain of optimal operational regimes, maintaining solution stability and assessment accuracy. This is especially important when using a simulation model that captures the system's dynamic behavior until it reaches a steady-state regime. The chosen research struc- ture effectively prevents convergence issues commonly en- countered in numerical algorithms applied to nonlinear and non-analytical dependencies. The objective of this study is to obtain a quantitative assess- ment of the energy feasibility of implementing frequency control of the induction generator (IG) currents. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive mathematical model is devel- oped for the investigation of operational regimes of the small-scale HPP’s electromechanical system (EMS) under varying conditions of axial guide vane opening, IG current frequency, and static head. Additionally, a methodology for this numerical experiment is proposed, and the effective application domain of turbine-generator frequency regula- tion is investigated, including the determination of its pa- rameters and potential reserves for improving energy effi- ciency. The research conditions are similar to those applied in the comprehensive mathematical model of HPPs [17] and in the simulation model of the hydraulic turbine [18]. Opera- tional regimes are studied considering the mutual interac- tions among the hydraulic turbine, the induction generator with its control system, and the HPP’s hydraulic system. The functional diagram of the small-scale HPP EMS, shown in Fig. 1, reflects the system structure and the mechanism of interaction between its components. Fig. 1. Functional diagram of the EMC of a small hydropower plant: ВС – water reservoir; ГМ – hydraulic network; ГТ – hydraulic turbine; МП – multiplier; АГ – asynchronous generator; ПР – converter of electric power parameters; СК – con- trol system; Qnat – water inflow to the reservoir; Qg – water flow at the HPP; H – static head; HГТ – head of the HT; ΔHГМ – head loss in the hydraulic network; RГМ – hydraulic network resistance; МГТ, МАГ – torque on the shaft of the GT and AG; ωГТ, ωr – angular velocity of the GT and AG shaft; i - transmission ratio of the MP; Ре , РСП – electric power of the AG and directed to the consumer; f, UАГ – frequency and voltage of the AG; a0 - opening of the blades of the axial guide apparatus of the GT The magnitude of the static head (taking into account losses in the hydraulic network) determines the turbine head, which, depending on the turbine speed and the state of the guide vane apparatus, dictates the water flow and torque on the shaft. The turbine torque, through a multi- plier, is applied to the IG shaft and, in interaction with the electromagnetic torque of the IG (which depends on rotor slip, frequency, and current magnitude), determines the ro- tational speed of all shafts and, consequently, affects the water flow. Considering the interconnections of EMS components (Fig. 1), the equations of electrical, mechanical, andhydraulic equilibrium [17, 18] provide the determination of steady- state operational parameters in accordance with the control system’s influence on the turbine guide vane and the conver- sion of electrical energy parameters within the IG circuits. Frequency variation affects the angular velocity of the shafts and ensures the establishment of the desired operational re- gime. Under natural flow conditions, the control system en- sures the equality of HPP inflow and outflow and establishes operating mode 258 Відновлювана енергетика. № 4/2025 | Гідро-воднева енергетика the corresponding static head regime. The electrical power generated by the IG, after conversion, is supplied to consum- ers. The search for optimal operational conditions is carried out according to the criterion of maximum energy efficiency, defined as the ratio of the produced output to the con- sumed resources [6]. For small-scale HPPs, this ratio corre- sponds to the generated power versus water consumption, considered both as an instantaneous indicator and as the integral of these quantities over operational cycles [17]. This comprehensive mathematical model is intended for the study of steady-state operating regimes, allowing the assessment of energy efficiency while neglecting the influ- ence of transient processes. Under these conditions, based on the numerical experiment, the operational parameters and the corresponding values of the efficiency criterion are determined. Given the complex, nonlinear models of EMS components in HPPs, steady-state operating parameters are determined by solving the system of differential equa- tions for electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equilibrium until a steady state is reached, using simulation tools. Un- like the algebraic approach for steady-state operating regimes, this method avoids convergence issues in systems with nonlinear coefficients [19, 20]. The mathematical model for comprehensive EMS analysis of HPPs with propeller hydraulic turbines Pr 15/1100-5-25, with a diameter of D1 = 1.2 m, and induction generators based on series 4A355M2 motors [17, 18, 21], has been re- fined to account for turbine-generator frequency control. It allows for variation of the IG current frequency and, accord- ingly, the voltage according to the law U/f. The model [17] also allows adjustment of the number of identical turbine- generator units operating in parallel. Mechanical energy from each turbine is transmitted to two induction genera- tors, which supply electrical energy to consumers in paral- lel. To improve the loading factor of the IGs, the model in- cludes the option to electrically disconnect one generator. The IG model for simulation purposes is built considering steel losses using appropriate equivalent circuits [22]. The comprehensive mathematical model of the EMS of a small-scale HPP for investigating operational regimes with variable IG current frequency in a simulation system is shown in Fig. 2. It corresponds to the functional diagram in Fig. 1. In the upper third of Fig. 2, blocks for solving the differential equations of hydraulic and mechanical equilibrium [18] are placed, determining the water flow and rotor angular velocity of the turbine. A propeller hydraulic turbine Pr 15/1100-5-25 [18] is used in this block for simulation. In the middle part of Fig. 2, the simulation model of the in- duction generator (IG) with equivalent steel-loss circuits [22] is located. This model is based on an induction gener- ator model for electromechanical systems with an arbitrary stator winding structure. In the simulation system, the sta- tor winding branches are represented by controlled current Fig. 2. In this block, using the input rotor angular ve- locity and instantaneous voltage values (the voltage matrix consists of three zero values for the short-circuited equiva- lent steel loss circuits and two-line voltages for the IG “star” connection scheme), the instantaneous values of currents (three equivalent circuits and three stator phases), electro- magnetic torque, and air-gap flux density are calculated. The calculation of IG parameters is performed in the Param_AD block, equivalent circuit parameters in r_st, and IG power losses in del_P. In the lower third of Fig. 2, output blocks and blocks for calculating operational regime indica- tors are placed. An example of calculating the operational regime parameters of the small-scale HPP EMS until reach- ing steady state is shown in Fig. 3. The dimensions are indi- cated in the curve labels: static head, H; water flow, Qg ; axial guide vane opening, a0; generated power of the IG, Pe; IG losses, Pg; and efficiency indicator, Pe/Q. Fig. 3. Calculation of operating mode parameters to steady state In this study, a refined comprehensive mathematical model is used to search for optimal operational parameter values according to the criterion of maximizing the ratio of gener- ated power (Pe) to HPP water flow (Qg). The variables con- sidered are the static head (H), the axial guide vane opening (a0), and the IG current frequency (f). The mathematical model, implemented in the MATLAB simulation environ- ment, solves the system of differential equations of electri- cal, mechanical, and hydraulic equilibrium until the steady- state operational parameters are reached, based on the specified initial conditions. The resulting steady-state val- ues allow the determination of the efficiency criterion and indicate the desired direction for adjusting the variable pa- rameters in the search for the optimal configuration. According to the turbine design characteristics, the axial guide vane opening changes discretely, whereas the head and frequency can vary continuously. MATLAB provides the capability to modify variable parameters during the calcu- lation; however, in the current model, this feature applies only to the head, as the specified frequency value is used during model initialization to set the parameters of stand- ard calculation blocks. Based on this approach, the search for optimal operational parameters (according to the maximum Pe/Q criterion) was conducted through a series of computational trials with variations in the initial conditions of frequency, axial guide vane opening, and reservoir static head, allowing for head adjustment during the calculation process. To minimize the number of computational attempts, the numerical experi- ment was conducted in several stages. The first stage of the numerical experiment begins with de- termining the optimal IG current frequency values while keeping the static head (H, from 3 to 8 m with a step of 1 m) and the axial guide vane opening (a0, from 23 to 31 mm with a step of 1 mm) constant. As an example, the results of the numerical experiment for a head of H=5 m are shown in Fig. 4. In each row, corresponding to a specific a0 value, the variation of operational parameters with changing fre- quency f [Hz] is presented: Pe/Q, 0.01 MW/(m³/s) = 0.01 MJ/m³; ηT – turbine efficiency; Pg, kW – IG heat losses, which are 16.77 kW under nominal conditions (the multi- plier indicates the number of simultaneously operating IGs per turbine); Qg, m³/s – HPP water flow; Pe, kW – gener- ated power. For each a0 value, frequency variation was per- formed to identify conditions of maximum efficiency. As a result of analyzing the obtained data over the range of a0, it was determined that for a head of H=5 m, the optimal values are: a0=26 mm and f=45 Hz. m 0,1m m³/s MJ/m³ MW kW Fig. 4. Changing the mode parameters with a fre- quency of H = 5 m and changing a0 260 Відновлювана енергетика. A similar investigation was carried out for other head val- ues within the specified range. For each head, the opera- tional regimes corresponding to the maximum value of the system efficiency criterion were determined. The results are summarized in Table 1, where for each specified head value, the parameters of the optimal regime are presented for a fixed frequency of 50 Hz [17] (first column) and for a variable frequency (analogous to Fig. 4). Table 1. Parameters of optimal operating conditions at a constant head The last row of Table 1 shows, in percentage terms and at constant head, the increase in the efficiency criterion achieved through IG frequency control. It can be seen that when the turbine operates within the region of maximum efficiency [18, 21], the application of frequency regulation does not yield positive results. The effectiveness of regula- tion increases as the operating regimes shift toward the boundaries of the turbine’s energy-efficient operating re- gion. For example, at a head of 3 m, reducing the current frequency to 34 Hz can increase energy efficiency by 14%. The second stage of the numerical experiment concerns determining the conditions for efficient HPP operation with frequency regulation across specific operational modes. To reduce the negative environmental impact, it is currently important to ensure the natural water outflow from reser- voirs while minimizing water level fluctuations. In [17], such a mode was investigated, and as a result of the numerical experiment under industrial IG frequency, it was deter- mined that the maximum energy efficiency for a natural outflow of Q=4.875 m3/s occurs under the conditions: a0=23 mm; H=4.078m, with the following operational pa- rameters: Pe=114.8 kW; Pg=6.8 kW; Pe/Q=2.354×10−2 MJ/m3. The application of frequency regulation to the hydro unit introduces an additional optimization parameter, which significantly complicates the search for the optimum. To re- duce the number of calculation attempts, this search is ini- tiated from the conditions of optimal operation at constant heads, as specified in Table 1. Based on these data, fre- quency–head dependencies as a function of flow rate were constructed, as shown in Fig. 5. In this case, the optimal value of the axial guide vane opening remains practically unchanged at 25–26 mm. These dependencies make it pos- sible to determine which constant head corresponds to the given water flow and the frequency should be applied to achieve maximum energy efficiency under these condi- tions. When searching for optimal conditions for the natu- ral outflow regime, the decisive factor is the constant res- ervoir discharge of the HPP, rather than a constant head, which was the basis for constructing the dependencies in Fig. 5. Therefore, these dependencies provide only the ini- tial conditions for further optimization. For a natural out- flow of Q=4.875 m3/s, the dependencies of Fig. 5 yielded the following initial values for the optimization study: H=3.78 m; f=38.68 Hz. Fig. 5. Changes in the optimal frequency and head in the flow function according to Table 1 The numerical experiment to refine the parameters of the optimal operating regime for natural outflow was carried out through a series of calculation attempts, each performed at specified values of a0 and f. Under these conditions, the de- veloped mathematical model was used to solve the system of differential equations until a steady state was reached. At the same time, the calculated discharge was compared with the prescribed natural outflow value. Each computational at- tempt continued until equality between the calculated and prescribed discharge was achieved, which was accomplished by gradually adjusting the head value without interrupting the computational process. The set of consecutively obtained results is presented in Ta- ble 2. Each subsequent computational attempt was perfor- Mode parameters H, m 8 7 6 5 4 3 50Hz 53Hz 50Hz 50Hz 50Hz 50Hz 50Hz 45Hz 50Hz 40Hz 50Hz 34Hz Q, m3/s 6,75 6,8 6, 4 6,4 6,25 6,25 5,95 5,62 5,8 5,02 5,63 4,36 a0, mm 24,5 25 25 25 26 26 27 26 29 26 31 26 Pe, 0,1МW 4,2 4,3 3,5 3,5 2,9 2,9 2,35 2,2 1,75 1,57 1,2 1,02 Ре/Q, 0,01 МJ/m3 6,14 6,22 5,5 5,5 4,75 4,75 3,9 3,916 3 3,13 2,05 2,34 Δ(Ре/Q), % 1,3 0 0 0,41 4,33 14,15 261 Відновлювана енергетика. № 4/2025 | Гідро-воднева енергетика med using the output data from the end of the previous at- tempt, with adjustment of the IG current frequency in the direction that ensured an increase in the HPP’s energy effi- ciency. The first row of Table 2 indicates the number of the com- putational attempt. Each attempt ended with the same dis- charge value. Based on the results of 15 computational attempts (within the permissible range of guide vane openings according to the turbine’s technical specifications), the conditions for maximum energy effi- ciency of the HPP with IG frequency regulation were deter- mined as follows: a0=23 mm; H=4.78 m; f=34.75 Hz; Pe=176.2 kW. The outcome of the study under these condi- tions is shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. The results obtained from Table 2 are presented in graphical form in Fig. 6. The results of the refined optimization study of the natural flow regime provide better outcomes compared to those obtained under conditions of constant head optimization (Fig. 5). This can be explained by the fact that a reduction in the optimal frequency value for maximum energy effi- ciency is accompanied by a decrease in discharge, while its increase up to the value of the natural flow is sustained un- der a higher head. As a result, according to Fig. 6, the head is 1 m greater than that in Fig. 5, which leads to a significant increase in the potential energy of water and, accordingly, in the generated power. In the examined case, it is shown that frequency regulation, compared to operation at the in- dustrial grid frequency, provides an increase in energy effi- ciency by a factor of 176 / 114.8 = 1.53. Conclusions. The comprehensive mathematical model of the electromechanical system of a small HPP ensures a comparative analysis of the efficiency of induction genera- tor frequency-controlled modes by determining the param- eters of steady-state operating conditions at various fre- quencies. The improved accuracy of the study is achieved through solving the system of differential equations of elec- trical, mechanical, and hydraulic equilibrium up to steady state, taking into account the mutual interaction of system components and the nonlinear nature of their equations. A manual version of the numerical experiment for optimum search, structured into several logical stages with a sequen- tial narrowing and detailing of the parameter domain, proved to be not only feasible but also practically justified as a way of obtaining reliable and physically sound results regarding the conditions for maximum energy efficiency of a small HPP in variable operating modes. The minimization of the number of computational trials in the numerical ex- periment for optimum search (with the criterion of maxim- izing the ratio of generated power to discharge, by varying the opening of the axial guide vane, the frequency of the induction generator currents, and the static head) is achieved by the preliminary search for optimum modes un- der constant head, followed by refinement that takes into account the requirements of the HPP regime under study. The feasibility of applying frequency regulation of induction generator turbine units in small hydropower plants de- pends on the ratio between the parameters of the required energy-efficient operating mode (head, discharge, and opening of the axial guide vane), determined by varying the generator current frequency, and the optimal turbine pa- rameters at a given head and industrial frequency. When these parameters coincide, the feasibility is minimal. It in- creases as the operating point approaches the boundary of the turbine’s energy-efficient utilization range. The feasibility of applying frequency control to turbine units in small hydropower plants increases under natural flow conditions, which are characterized by operation at low heads. Under optimal frequency-regulated modes, dis- charges are reduced, which allows for a higher reservoir water level and greater HPP energy output. For example, for the turbine Pr 15/1100-5-25 with a diam- eter D1 = 1.2 m and an induction generator based on the motor 4A355M2, under natural flow with Q = 4.875 m³/s, reducing the frequency from 50 to 34.75 Hz (with optimal adjustment of other controllable parameters) results in a balance between HPP discharge and natural inflow, Fig. 6. A comprehensive mathematical model of the electromechanical system of a small hydropower plant has been substantiated for the purpose of investigating its energy efficiency under varying parameters: the opening degree of the axial guide vane apparatus, the current frequency of the induction generator, and the static head.
