description Modeling the Response of the Power Grid to Frequency Deviations in a Hybrid Energy Network Combining Conventional Generation and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) via the Addition of a variable-parameter virtual BESS was performed.  The analytics cover stability assessment, extended frequency pro-file analysis, RoCoF (Rate of Change of Frequency), spectral characteristics, and are also used to study the behavior of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and the role of RES in frequency regulation within the IPG, including performance during islanded operation. The need for implementing virtual machine (VSM) technologies to provide synthetic inertia and damping to effectively smooth high-risk disturbances, as well as to combat daily low-level turbulence, is justified. The simulation results and analysis show that under the considered scenario, the integrated power system with a high share of RES demonstrates an acceptable margin of “dynamic stability”. The results of the study can be applied in real time for monitoring, as well as in the optimization processes of network or autonomous microgrid configurations.

Top min frequencies (≥ 47 Hz) - 49.301 Hz at 09-Apr-2024 04:41:48. Top max frequencies (≤ 51.5 Hz) – 50.144 Hz at 18-Jan-2024 07:00:44 Найнижче зафіксоване значення в діапазоні 49.301 Hz –49.828 Hz. RoCoF (Rate of Change of Frequency) Modeling the Response of the Power Grid to Frequency Deviations in a Hybrid Energy Network Combin- ing Conventional Generation and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) via the Addition of a variable-parameter virtual BESS was performed. The analytics cover stability assessment, extended frequency pro-file analysis, RoCoF (Rate of Change of Frequency), spectral characteristics, and are also used to study the behavior of Battery Energy Stor- age Systems (BESS) and the role of RES in frequency regulation within the IPG, including performance during is- landed operation. The results of the study can be ap- plied in real time for monitoring, as well as in the optimization processes of network or autonomous microgrid configurations. PSD (Welch) — Power Spectral Density via Welch’s Method Introduction Modern power systems are rapidly transforming under the impact of high penetration of renewable energy sources (RES), decarbonization, and the transition from centralized generation to decentralized hybrid networks. In Ukraine, these processes are additionally complicated by wartime risks, infrastructure damage, instability of generation sched- ules, and substantial constraints imposed by the Transmis- sion System Operator (TSO) NPC “Ukrenergo”). Frequency stability is a fundamental criterion of power system reliability. In systems with a high share of RES, sys- tem inertia decreases, leading to a higher Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF), more frequent excursions beyond the deadband, and the emergence of long-term trends in frequency deviation from nominal values. Under such con- ditions, energy storage systems (ESS) (BESS) become one of the key balancing instruments. This paper summarizes the results of modeling an ESS that responds to real frequency fluctuations in the Integrated Power System of Ukraine over one year, including SoC dy- namics, cycling characteristics, stress profile, energy defi- cit, and compliance with ENTSO-E requirements. Methods The proposed study considers a method for modeling the response of the Power Grid (PG) to frequency variations [1] in a hybrid power network that combines conventional generation and renewable energy sources (RES) by intro- ducing a virtual Energy Storage System (ESS) with different parameter sets. A software tool was developed in MATLAB to analyze the PG response to frequency deviations under specified droop settings, deadband, rated power, energy capacity, and initial state of charge (SoC). The analytics in- cludes stability assessment, extended analysis of the fre- quency profile, Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF), and spectral characteristics, and is further applied to investi- gate the behavior of ESS, to determine the role of RES in frequency regulation within the IPS, and to study system behavior under islanded operation [3]. The increasing penetration of RES in the power system re- duces the inertial characteristics of the IPS, thereby de- creasing the system’s ability to damp frequency oscilla- tions. This makes it essential to study the IPS response to short-term and long-term frequency disturbances. In addi- tion, it is particularly relevant to examine the capability of RES to support system frequency in coordination with en- ergy storage systems under islanded operating conditions [2], [4], [5]. Modeling data The model is based on the following parameters: the max- imum response power of the Power Grid (MW); the fre- quency deadband (Hz); droop (Hz/100%); the initial SoC (%); and a “virtual” energy capacity (MWh) that emulates the flexibility of the Integrated Power System of Ukraine. A semiannual frequency time series (n = 15,689,209 data points) with a 1-s time step, provided by Ukrenergo [1], is processed. When the frequency deviates from its nominal value, a response (generation or consumption) is acti- vated, subject to power and SoC constraints. Energy accu- mulation in response to disturbances is simulated. Virtual ESS model A MATLAB algorithm was developed to emulate frequency response according to the classical Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) characteristic, enabling the following param- eters to be considered: − selection of droop (Droop); − insensitivity zone (deadband), ±15 mHz in the default model; − power limitation P_max; − energy capacity limitation E_max; − initial state of charge of the ESS (SoC_initial); − upper and lower SoC limits (SoC_hi і SoC_lo); − frequency filtering. For the simulations presented in this paper, the following virtual ESS parameters were used: − P_max = 5 MW; − E_max = 10 MWh; − Droop = 0.2 Hz /100 %; − deadband = 0.015 Hz; − SoC_lo = 5%, SoC_hi = 95%; − SoC_initial = 50% The response algorithm comprises 15 technical blocks: 1. Import of timestamps and frequency data. 2. Data validation and noise filtering. 3. Construction of a variable-Δt\Delta tΔt grid and han- dling of duplicates/missing samples. 4. Computation of frequency deviation Δf\Delta fΔf. 5. Preliminary artifact removal (step-filtering of pseudo- spikes). 6. RoCoF calculation (raw) and additional estimators (moving mean / ENTSO-E slope / Savitzky–Golay, SG). 7. Application of the deadband to Δf\Delta fΔf to ensure zero BESS response within a small range. 8. Calculation of the droop-based power command. 9. Limitation of the command power within ±Pmax⁡\pm P_{\max}±Pmax. 10. SoC constraints (lower reserve / upper ceiling) and cal- culation of EunservedE_{\text{unserved}}Eunserved. 11. Time-domain integration of energy and SoC using varia- ble-Δt\Delta tΔt. 12. Detection of “critical events” based on the ∣Δf∣|\Delta f|∣Δf∣ threshold and computation of their metrics (ASUI, settling). 13. Detection of emergency intervals with f<47f < 47f<47 Hz (duration and occurrence-frequency analytics). 14. Cycle counting and SoC-stress indicators (CSI, daily sta- tistics). 15. Generation of plots and reports, and saving of MAT re- sults. Stability of frequency maintenance within regulatory ranges. Analysis of the simulation results, in particular those pre- sented in Table 1, allows several conclusions to be drawn. 1, Long-term frequency asymmetry and energy drift The PG (ОЕМ) “discharges” the BESS more than three times as often as it charges it (the ESS remains in a discharged state 3.17 times longer than in a charged state). A total of 22.5% of cases correspond to reaching the maximum state- of-charge limit, whereas 77.5% of cases correspond to full discharge of the virtual ESS, indicating an energy deficit. Without SoC control, the ESS inevitably “drops” to zero un- der the specified 1:2 (power-to-energy) parameter ratio. 2. Cycling behavior of the ESS A slow but persistent operation of the storage device within the system is observed. The BESS traversed the range from one extreme to the other 13 times. 3. Frequency analysis Maintaining the operating band indicates adequate perfor- mance of the frequency support means under FCR, which, in turn, evidences continuous operation of the ESS. Frequency support results demonstrate substantial stabil- ity of the IPS (ОЕМ). Deviations exceeding 0.2 Hz are ad- dressed in the subsequent analytical blocks. 4. Trend and daily seasonality analysis of frequency To identify structural components of frequency, the time series realization 𝑓(𝑡) was decomposed into three compo- nents: trend, daily seasonality, and the residual stochastic component (Fig. 2). The trend (24-h moving mean) reflects slow-frequency varia- tions driven by generation–load imbalance and by fluctuations in imports/exports. Quasi-periodic waves with durations of 3– 7 days are observed, which is typical for an IPS (ОЕМ) with a high share of RES. Daily seasonality exhibits a recurring 24- hour pattern with an amplitude of approximately ±5⋅10−3 Hz. Frequency reaches its minimum during evening peak-load hours and increases during nighttime hours as demand de- creases. Anomalous events (the March frequency dip) are clearly identified in the trend component but do not affect the shape of daily seasonality. This decomposition is important be- cause it separates structural frequency variations (trend + sea- sonality) from stochastic fluctuations to which the ESS re- sponds in primary frequency control. Fig. 2. Plot of frequency trend and seasonality analysis 103 Відновлювана енергетика. 5. RoCoF (Rate of Change of Frequency) analysis The methodology, which includes processing of raw data, smoothing (moving mean), application of a standard win- dow (ENTSO-E slope), and the Savitzky–Golay derivative, enables an in-depth understanding of the system's inertial properties. The 95th and 99th percentiles (p95, p99) are in the range of 0.003–0.005 Hz/s. These values are two orders of magnitude lower than ENTSO-E indicative limits (typical bounds of ±0.5…±1.0 Hz/s), evidencing high frequency sta- bility. This confirms that, in the analyzed time series, RES do not introduce significant high-frequency turbulence. Interpretation of extreme values (Min, Max): despite low statistical levels, exceptionally high peak RoCoF values were recorded, specifically max=24.78709 Hz/s and min=−16.68428 Hz/s. These peaks do not represent sys- temic instability; rather, they are isolated, short-lived spikes occurring at moments of critical disturbances (e.g., switching operations, tripping of large units, or emergency events). 6. RoCoF analysis in comparison with ENTSO-E and Phasor Measurement Unit measurements RoCoF is assessed for compliance with ENTSO-E recom- mendations regarding frequency dynamics. Percentiles are used to quantify the RoCoF distribution computed by the ENTSO-E method (fixed 2-second window). The result is denoted as ENTSO-E Slope (p95/p99). In addition, an analysis is performed by smoothing the fre- quency 𝑓 using a moving average with a 100 ms window, followed by differentiation of the smoothed series, which emulates a PMU. The result is denoted as Virtual PMU RoCoF. Further analysis is conducted by determining the share of time during which the absolute value of RoCoF does not exceed critical limits (±0.5 Hz/s and ±1.0 Hz/s). The simulation results demonstrate extremely low frequency turbulence. This confirms that, in a hybrid power system, RES do not create critical high-frequency turbulence. Low RoCoF values indicate that primary and secondary fre- quency control (FCR/aFRR) is effective and that the control quality of NPC “Ukrenergo” is high. The indicators “±0.5 Hz/s” and “±1.0 Hz/s” (100%) are the most important for demonstrating reliability. They imply that no RoCoF event, measured according to regulatory standards (even with 100 ms smoothing), exceeded the critical thresholds of ±0.5 Hz/s and ±1.0 Hz/s. The extreme peak RoCoF values observed in the raw series constitute quantitative evidence of reduced inertial characteristics of the system. This substantiates the need to implement Vir- tual Synchronous Machine (VSM) technologies to provide synthetic inertia and damping aimed at effectively mitigat- ing these rare but high-risk disturbances, rather than ad- dressing day-to-day low-level turbulence. 7. Minimum and maximum frequency values (considering permissible limits) The analysis of frequency extrema shows that the range of the lowest and highest recorded values remains within nor- mative deviations maintained by RES and ESS equipment. 8. Distribution of frequency across regulatory zones The distribution of frequency across the regulatory ranges (47–47.5 Hz, 47.5–49.0 Hz, etc.) according to the Transmis- sion System Code (TSC) demonstrates a high level of stabil- ity in maintaining frequency within the normative bands. 9. Continuous residence time in zones with a minimum 30- minute requirement The analysis of deviation durations in accordance with TSC requirements on frequency residence time shows that, in all ranges, the requirements are fully met. Frequency val- ues below 47 Hz occurred for only 64 seconds; the events were short (4–52 s). Only four cases of critically low fre- quency were identified. While equipment operation is not guaranteed under such conditions, automatic re-connec- tion depends on the resynchronization procedure with the grid. The examination of these cases highlights issues re- lated to the use of RES generation when equipment has a narrow allowable frequency and voltage operating range, whose impacts require further investigation. 10. Settling Time The following are investigated: the average time for fre- quency to return to the deadband; the number of events exceeding the deadband; and the number of events re- stored within normative limits. For the selected event threshold ∣Δ𝑓∣>0.2 Hz, four significant frequency disturb- ances were identified over the modeling period, with a to- tal time spent in this zone of approximately 1.1 min. The integral quality indicator—the Acceptable Shortfall Index (ASUI) (індекс допустимого непостачання частоти)— equals 4⋅10−6, indicating an extremely small fraction of time during which frequency leaves permissible limits. The aver- age recovery time, defined as the interval from the onset of the ∣Δ𝑓∣>0.2 Hz event to the moment of continuous resi- dence in the deadband ±0.015 Hz for at least 10 s, is ap- proximately 44 s. This is consistent with the ENTSO-E framework codes, which state that frequency should be re- turned to the normal operating band within tens of seconds after major disturbances, while residence time in extreme frequency ranges should be significantly limited. The simu- lation results and analytics show that, under the considered scenario, an integrated power system with a high share of RES (ВДЕ) exhibits an acceptable margin of “dynamic stabil- ity” with respect to frequency: the number of deep fre- quency events is small, and the average recovery time re- mains within typical ENTSO-E benchmarks. 11. Autocorrelation An analysis of the autocorrelation properties of frequency in the network is performed, allowing assessment of: − the presence of recurring temporal structures in fre- quency deviations; − the length of the system’s statistical “memory”; − the impact of reduced inertia on IPS (ОЕС) stability; − the nature of frequency oscillations that must be com- pensated by the ESS (УЗЕ; BESS) during primary fre- quency control. Autocorrelation analysis (ACF/PACF) is a key method for identifying the characteristics of frequency oscillations and for developing appropriate Δf(t)\Delta f(t)Δf(t) models in MATLAB (Figs. 3–4). The Autocorrelation Function (ACF) of the hourly-averaged frequency exhibits slow decay, with lags extending to sev- eral hundred hours. This implies that: − the system retains long-term correlated frequency shifts; − if the frequency has been below nominal for several hours, it is highly likely to remain depressed; − the lack of inertial support and a substantial share of re- newable energy sources (RES) contribute to a long-act- ing energy imbalance. A physical implication for ESS modeling is that the BESS must have sufficient energy reserves to compensate for prolonged offsets, not only short-term disturbances. A 1:2 ratio is insufficient for frequency regulation Fig. 3. Hourly-averaged frequency autocorrelation Fig. 4. Daily-averaged frequency autocorrelation The diurnal ACF profile (Fig. 4) does not reveal a stable pe- riodic pattern: the values fluctuate around zero. This indi- cates that: − there is no pronounced diurnal periodicity in frequency behavior; − the influence of RES is dominant and stochastic in nature; − daily load schedules do not reproduce a repeatable fre- quency pattern due to generation–load imbalances. Practical implication: in modeling, simple sinusoidal repre- sentations of the daily frequency cycle cannot be used; in- stead, stochastic models of Δf(t)\Delta f(t)Δf(t) are re- quired. The ACF of fast (second-scale) frequency deviations shows a sharp decay of autocorrelation to zero within 40–80 s, with residual fluctuations behaving nearly as white noise. This indicates that short-term frequency variations are driven by the stochasticity of RES (ВДЕ), rapid load changes, low inertia, and limited FCR. For ESS/BESS, this confirms the need for fast (sub-second and second-level) Frequency Reg- ulation (FR) control algorithms. The Partial Autocorrelation Function (PACF) exhibits dis- tinct peaks at lags 1–3 and an absence of significant corre- lations at larger lags (Fig. 5). This implies that the fre- quency-deviation process Δf(t)\Delta f(t)Δf(t) can be represented by an AR(1–3) model; the system does not ex- hibit deep correlated structures; and the stochastic nature of Δf(t)\Delta f(t)Δf(t) is dominant. Fig. 5. PACF-based identification of the AR process order For MATLAB-based modeling, the Partial Autocorrelation Function (PACF) enables the generation of synthetic fre- quency time series with statistically consistent properties for testing ESS algorithms. Key findings of the autocorrelation analysis: 1. The frequency signal exhibits a combination of slow and fast components. The hourly ACF indicates slow trend shifts driven by the generation–load balance. The sec- ond-by-second ACF reflects fast noise due to the sto- chastic nature of RES. 2. Persistent Δ𝑓Δf offsets explain long SoC variations in BESS modeling. The 1:2 ratio (10 MWh energy capacity) proves insufficient: the system may remain in an offset state for days, thereby depleting the stored energy. 3. ACF/PACF constitute the basis for constructing stochas- tic frequency models. This enables proper testing of Fre- quency Regulation (FR) algorithms for the ESS in MATLAB. Thus, the autocorrelation analysis of frequency reveals the presence of long-term structural offsets, the absence of stable daily periodicity, short memory of second-scale dis- turbances, and a low order of the AR process. This explains the formation of the ESS energy deficit in the simulations and confirms the need for both adequate energy reserves and fast, highly maneuverable primary frequency-control resources. 12. Stability indices (ESI, ELR, CSI) 1. The Energy Stability Index (ESI) of the ESS (УЗЕ) quanti- fies what fraction of the primary regulating energy re- quested by the system the ESS was able to actually de- liver: 𝐸𝑆𝐼=1−𝐸unserved/𝐸demand. In the present case, the fraction of undelivered energy is 6.03%, hence 𝐸𝑆𝐼=0.9397. The ESS demonstrated high, though not perfect, energy stability by providing approximately 94% of the requested frequency-regula- tion work. The remaining ~6% was lost due to depletion of stored energy at 𝑆𝑜𝐶𝑙𝑜 or saturation at 𝑆𝑜𝐶ℎ𝑖. This confirms the need for SoC management and the infea- sibility of fully autonomous ESS operation (without scheduled interruptions for discharge and/or recharge). 2. The Energy Loss Ratio (ELR) is defined as ELR = (E_un- served/ E_ served); here, 𝐸𝐿𝑅=0.0641. Unlike ESI, ELR reflects not the share of demand, but the efficiency of utilizing the actually delivered resource. It provides an alternative view of the 6.03% computed relative to 𝐸de- mand , corresponding to 6.41% of the energy volume that was actually delivered. 3. The Capacity Stress Index (CSI) characterizes the frac- tion of time the ESS remains in an “energy blockade” state, when further charging or discharging is impossi- ble. In the simulations, 4.25% of the time was spent at SoC boundaries (≤5% or ≥95%), with most of this time at minimum SoC, indicating a structural energy deficit in 106 Відновлювана енергетика. The values of 140.8 h at 𝑆𝑜𝐶𝑙𝑜 versus 44.4 h at 𝑆𝑜𝐶ℎ𝑖 indicate insufficient energy capacity, with the system frequently reaching the depleted state 𝑆𝑜𝐶𝑙𝑜. The key conclusion is that an ESS rated at 5 MW / 10 MWh operates at the limit of its capability; its en- ergy capacity is insufficient to meet the stability-index targets. Increasing the energy capacity or periodically disconnecting the ESS according to a SoC-management profile to replenish energy is required. 13. Energy deficit The total energy deficit of frequency regulation that could not be delivered by the ESS due to energy-capacity and SoC constraints amounted to 90.304 MWh. This corresponds to 6.03% of the total primary-regulation demand (𝐸de- mand=1498.220 MWh). The deficit arises from the follow- ing factors: − a structural downward shift of the mean frequency (mean Δ𝑓<0), which leads to systematic ESS discharge; − chronic generation–load imbalance, with frequent ac- tive-power shortages; − a high share of RES that provides neither inertia nor pri- mary regulation; − insufficient primary reserve volume in the power system; − insufficient ESS energy capacity relative to the fre- quency profile (confirmed by extensive operation at 𝑆𝑜𝐶𝑙𝑜: >140 h). The key conclusion is that even if an ESS with very large power capability (𝑃max) is installed, without sufficient en- ergy capacity and without a systemic energy balance, the SoC will continuously decrease. This makes it impossible to deliver part of the requested regulating energy in an auton- omous mode. For the considered profile, 10 MWh proved insufficient, as confirmed by 90.3 MWh of undelivered en- ergy, operation at SoC limits for 4.25% of the time, and the dominance of 𝑆𝑜𝐶𝑙𝑜 over 𝑆𝑜𝐶ℎ𝑖 events (914 versus 266 events). Increasing the energy capacity would substantially reduce the energy deficit and improve the ESI. 14. Spectral analysis: A spectral analysis of the time realization of frequency de- viations Δ𝑓(𝑡)=𝑓(𝑡)−50 Hz was performed using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and power spectral density estima- tion via Welch’s method (Fig. 6). The objective is to identify dominant oscillation frequencies, potential resonant modes, and to assess spectral “smearing” caused by sto- chastic influences of RES (ВДЕ) and load variations. Fig. 6. Welch-method estimate of the power spectral density The simulation results are as follows. The dominant frequency of 0.0003 Hz corresponds to oscil- lations that prevail in the frequency-deviation process of the grid. A value of 0.0003 Hz implies a period of approxi- mately 𝑇≈1/0.0003≈3333 s ≈55.5 min. This indicates that the most energetically significant component is a very low- frequency component associated not with narrowband os- cillations, but with slow trends and quasi-stationary power- balance fluctuations (daily, weather-driven, and load-re- lated variations, including the impact of the RES profile). In other words, the system frequency predominantly “drifts” slowly, without pronounced resonant peaks in the range of several hertz. This behavior supports the conclusion that the main frequency variations are not caused by high-fre- quency turbulence of inverter-based RES. The spectral centroid represents the energy “center of gravity” of the spectrum. A value of 0.1089 Hz corresponds to a characteristic time scale of approximately 𝑇≈9.2 s. This is consistent with the physics of primary frequency control and the inertial response of the system: a substantial por- tion of oscillation energy is concentrated in the 0.05–0.20 Hz band, where the aggregate effects of generators, loads, and rapid RES power changes are manifested. For the ESS, 107 Відновлювана енергетика. № 1/2026 | Комплексні проблеми енергетичних систем на основі НВДЕ this implies that the key capability is to track and mitigate oscillations precisely within this frequency band, smooth- ing Δ𝑓 without imposing excessive requirements for instan- taneous power response above 1–2 Hz. The spectral entropy equals 21.6262. A value above 21 in- dicates a spectrum that is close to broadband in nature: the energy of Δ𝑓 is distributed relatively evenly across a large number of frequency components. The absence of sharply pronounced narrow peaks implies that: − no dominant, poorly damped electromechanical gener- ator modes are observed within narrow frequency bands; − frequency fluctuations are predominantly stochastic, shaped by the cumulative impact of RES, load variabil- ity, and control actions of regulating resources. The spectral analysis results confirm that the ESS should be configured to operate effectively at low and mid-frequency components of Δ𝑓 (0.0003–0.2 Hz), providing compensa- tion for slow and quasi-periodic frequency deviations. The lack of pronounced harmonic resonances justifies the use of smooth, non-resonant controllers (classical droop control with a deadband, as implemented in this MATLAB tool), without the need to introduce narrowband filters tar- geted at specific modes. High spectral entropy combined with a low dominant fre- quency indicates that the required ESS (УЗЕ) energy capac- ity should be determined primarily by hourly-scale energy requirements rather than solely by the instantaneous power needed to respond to short-duration spikes. Thus, the spectral analysis confirms that the considered fre- quency profile is characteristic of a power system with a high share of RES and well-damped operating modes, and that an ESS configured using the implemented droop-con- trol algorithm is suitable for the role of a virtual regulating power resource specifically within this frequency range. Conclusions of the research 1. The Power Grid exhibits a persistent energy deficit, manifested as follows: − a structural downward shift of the mean frequency has been recorded (mean Δ𝑓<0); − the IPS remains in a deficit state 3.17 times longer than in a surplus state; − 22.5% of cases reach the upper extreme (maximum charge), whereas 77.5% of cases reach full discharge of the virtual ESS, indicating an energy deficit. 2. Low-frequency energetic oscillations of the system: − slow SoC cycles with a period of approximately 11.5 days indicate the presence of a low-frequency compo- nent in the system’s energy balance that is not compen- sated by other regulating resources; − the energy-oscillation cycles correspond to low-fre- quency oscillations in the energy imbalance (≈0.0010– 0.0015 Hz), reflecting long-term structural shifts in the generation–load balance; − the balance shifts (cycles) are driven by asymmetry in the Δ𝑓 profile and by the duration of power deficit or surplus. Slow SoC drift, or “frequency drift,” constitutes a long-term component of the energy balance that is not compensated by regulating reserves; this low-fre- quency SoC component is attributable to the lack of suf- ficient inertial support. 3. The obtained results indicate an insufficient volume of primary reserve in the power system. 4. Very low RoCoF values were identified, indicating the system’s inertia, but also vulnerability to long-duration disturbances. 5. The analysis shows that an ESS with an energy-to-power ratio of 1:2 is insufficient for autonomous operation, and periodic shutdown is required to restore energy ca- pacity. 6. The optimal energy capacity and/or the optimal shut- down periodicity can also be identified using the pro- posed modeling approach. An ESS without SoC manage- ment inevitably depletes to zero. 7. Renewable energy sources (RES) should be engaged in providing inertia and in primary frequency control. Conclusions of the modeling The developed model and comprehensive analytics provide an in-depth understanding of frequency dynamics under hybrid power system conditions. The resulting data are use- ful for designing energy storage systems (ESS) under condi- tions of unstable frequency, forecasting RES response in regulation modes, verifying compliance with regulatory re- quirements, and developing strategies for islanded opera- tion. The results can be applied in real time for monitoring, as well as in optimization processes for configuring grid-con- nected or autonomous microgrids. The modeling outcomes are based on a semiannual time series, include a full analytics cycle, are stored in a MAT file, and are visualized through plots covering Power, SoC, Fre- quency, RoCoF, Autocorrelation, and Spectrum. The developed model can be used to optimize system pa- rameters, determine the required ESS energy capacity for the provision of system services, assess ESS stress under fu- ture growth in RES penetration, analyze the impact of con- tingency events and islanded modes, and develop digital twins of the power system. REFERENCES 1. https://ua.energy/dopomizhni- poslugy/#1723731737254-6ae24d13-791b Second-by- second frequency values measured by WAMS at NPC “Ukrenergo” substations. 2024. 2.
