| description | The object of the study is the process of thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass in a combined pyrolysis-gasification unit with integrated zones for reduction, cleaning, and enrichment of syn-gas. The aim of the work is the thermotechnical substantiation of the operating modes of the dry pyrolysis chamber and the reduction zone, taking into account the formation of water vapor and the course of high-temperature heterogeneous reactions. It has been established that during the pyrolysis of 1 kilogram of pellets, approximately 0.269 kg of water vapor is formed, which corresponds to 27% of the mass of the initial feedstock. About 52% of the total amount of water vapor is released within the temperature range of 100–130°C, which determines the maximum thermal load on the reduction zone. The water vapor enters the reaction volume at a temperature close to 100°C and requires additional heat input to be heated to the operating range of 800–1000°C. An assessment of the heat consumption for the water vapor and ensuring the progress of endothermic reactions upon its interaction with carbon has been carried out. The reserve of internal energy of the heated charcoal layer has been determined for an allowable temperature decrease from 1000 to 820°C. The additional power required to compensate for peak thermal loads in the reduction zone has been calculated. It has been shown that a total electric heating power of 6.5 kW ensures the maintenance of a stable temperature regime.
The required thickness of the thermal insulation layer made of charcoal has been substantiated. The minimum calculated thickness is 70 mm. In the design implementation, a thickness of 100 mm was adopted, taking into account an operational safety margin. The calculated heating rate of pellets in the dry pyrolysis chamber is 5.08°C/min. Experimental verification demonstrated high agreement between calculated and experimental data; the coefficient of determination is 0.989. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of stable production of syn-gas with increased heating value through the integration of pyrolysis and reduction processes within a unified technological scheme. |

гій піролізу і газифікації;
синтез-газу;
синтез-газу;

16 МДж/кг);
нято = 0.6 − 0.8).

𝑉газ = 0.5
нм3
кг
𝑚, (2)
нм3/год;
𝑚 – масова витрата палива, кг/год;
max
𝑥𝜖
𝑖=1 , 𝑛 = 8. (3)
який формує табличні показники 𝑦𝑖(𝑥);
оцінок bi за окремими критеріями;
𝑏𝑖(𝑦𝑖) = 1 + 9
𝑦𝑖−𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑎𝑥 −𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑖𝑛
, 𝑖𝜖{1,2,5, 7}. (5)
де 𝑦𝑖 – фактичне значення і-го показника;

𝑄𝑝 = 𝑐𝑝 · 𝑚𝑝 · ∆𝑇, (15)
де ср – питома теплоємність водяної пари, кДж/(кг·К);
mp – маса водяної пари, кг;
𝑃𝑝 = 𝑄𝑝/𝑡, (16)
𝑄𝑣 = 𝑐𝑣 · 𝑚𝑣 · ∆𝑇, (17)
новлення для її розігрівання до 1000С, кДж;
cv – питома теплоємність вуглецю, кДж/(кг·К);
mv – маса вуглецю, кг;
𝑃𝑣 = 𝑄𝑣/𝑡𝑣 , (18)
зігрівання зони відновлення, Вт;
𝑄𝑅 = ∆𝐻° · (𝑚𝐻2𝑂/𝑀𝐻2𝑂), (19)
акції утворення водяного газу, кДж (Дж);
𝑚𝐻2𝑂 – маса води, кг;
𝑀𝐻2𝑂 – молярна маса води, кг/моль;
𝑄𝑣𝑠 = 𝑐𝑣900 · 𝑚𝑣 · ∆𝑇, (20)
кДж;
дньої температури процесу (≈900 C), кДж/(кг·К);
𝑚𝑣 – маса деревного вугілля в зоні відновлення, кг;
𝑄 = 𝑄𝑝 + 𝑄𝑅 − 𝑄𝑣𝑠, (21)
сти до зони відновлення, кДж;
356
вання пари до 900 С, кДж;
утворення водяного газу, кДж;
𝑃 = 𝑄/𝑡, (22)
де Р – потужність теплового потоку, Вт;
до зони відновлення, кДж;
𝑞 =
𝑃
2·𝑆
, (23)
q – щільність теплового потоку, Вт/м2;
Р – сумарна потужність електронагрівачів, Вт;
∆𝑇 = 𝑇0 − 𝑇𝑆, (24)
де ∆𝑇 – зміна температури, С;
𝑇0 – початкова температура в зоні відновлення, С;
𝑞 = · ∆𝑇/𝛿, (25)
звідси
𝛿біовуг = · ∆𝑇/𝑞, (26)
де 𝛿біовуг – товщина шару вугілля, м;
q – щільність теплового потоку, Вт/м2;
λ – коефіцієнт теплопровідності шару вугілля, Вт/(м·К);
∆T – зміна температури, С;
𝑅 = 𝛿/, (27)
де δ – товщина шару, м;
𝑞′ = (𝑇1 − 𝑇2)/𝑅∑ , (28)
де 𝑞′ – густина реального теплового потоку, Вт/м2;
(температура шару деревного вугілля), C;
камери, C;
𝑄пел = 𝑞 · 𝑆𝑅, (29)
Вт;
лізу, С/хв;
𝑚пел – маса сухих пелет в секторі, кг;

Abstract. The object of the study is the process of thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass in a com-
bined pyrolysis-gasification unit with integrated zones for reduction, cleaning, and enrichment of syn-gas. The aim
of the work is the thermotechnical substantiation of the operating modes of the dry pyrolysis chamber and the
reduction zone, taking into account the formation of water vapor and the course of high-temperature heteroge-
neous reactions. It has been established that during the pyrolysis of 1 kilogram of pellets, approximately 0.269 kg
of water vapor is formed, which corresponds to 27% of the mass of the initial feedstock. About 52% of the total
amount of water vapor is released within the temperature range of 100–130°C, which determines the maximum
thermal load on the reduction zone. The water vapor enters the reaction volume at a temperature close to 100°C
and requires additional heat input to be heated to the operating range of 800–1000°C. An assessment of the heat
consumption for the water vapor and ensuring the progress of endothermic reactions upon its interaction with
carbon has been carried out. The reserve of internal energy of the heated charcoal layer has been determined for
an allowable temperature decrease from 1000 to 820°C. The additional power required to compensate for peak
thermal loads in the reduction zone has been calculated. It has been shown that a total electric heating power of
6.5 kW ensures the maintenance of a stable temperature regime.
The required thickness of the thermal insulation layer made of charcoal has been substantiated. The minimum
calculated thickness is 70 mm. In the design implementation, a thickness of 100 mm was adopted, taking into
account an operational safety margin. The calculated heating rate of pellets in the dry pyrolysis chamber is
5.08°C/min. Experimental verification demonstrated high agreement between calculated and experimental data;
the coefficient of determination is 0.989. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of stable production of syn-
gas with increased heating value through the integration of pyrolysis and reduction processes within a unified
technological scheme.

Introduction. The current stage of development of power
generation systems is characterized by a transition to de-
centralized electricity production based on renewable en-
ergy sources. Centralized power plants operating on fossil
fuels are gradually reducing their share in the energy mar-
ket, while small- and medium-scale units utilizing renewa-
ble energy sources are becoming increasingly widespread
[1]. The liberalization of the regulatory framework in the
field of small-scale energy and the growing demand for a
reliable and sustainable energy supply have led to an in-
creased demand for equipment for energy generation and
storage in general, and for electricity production in particu-
lar [2].
The stochastic nature of electricity generation from cli-
mate-dependent renewable sources (in particular, solar
and wind energy) does not ensure guaranteed stability of
power supply. At the same time, the use of small-capacity
steam and gas turbines (up to 200 kW installed capacity) is
constrained by high capital expenditures, and the limited
commercial availability of such equipment [3]. As a result,
industrial enterprises are actively implementing electric
power generation and cogeneration units based on piston
ICE operating on fossil fuels. The economically attractive
utilization of biomass-derived fuels is hindered by the high
cost of equipment, the complexity of existing technological
solutions, and the lack of affordable alternatives, which
leads to a low level of their large-scale deployment [4].
The current stage of transformation of the global energy
sector is characterized not only by an increase in absolute
electricity consumption, but also by a growing role of re-
newable energy resources in the structure of primary en-
ergy consumption and electricity generation [5]. According
to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electricity
demand in 2024 increased by approximately 4.3% com-
pared to 2023, significantly exceeding the average growth
rates of the previous decade and reflecting an acceleration
of the transition to electricity consumption across major
economic sectors on a global scale. Similar dynamics have
been observed in most regions of the world, including the
European Union, where electricity consumption in 2024 in-
creased by about 1.5% compared with the previous year
[6]. According to published forecasts, further growth in

global electricity consumption is expected at an average an-
nual rate of 3.7% in 2026, exceeding the growth rate of to-
tal world energy consumption [7]. These data confirm the
dominant role of the electricity sector in the structure of
final energy consumption.
As noted in [8], approximately 70% of the projected in-
crease in global primary energy consumption by 2040 will
be attributed to the power generation sector, while the
growth rate of electricity demand will be three times higher
than that of other forms of energy consumption. This trend
reflects a structural reorientation of the global energy bal-
ance toward electricity as the dominant energy carrier in
the system of final energy consumption.
At the same time, about 39.3% of global electricity genera-
tion is provided by coal-fired power plants, resulting in high
greenhouse gas emissions and underscoring the urgent
need for accelerated decarbonization of the power sector
through the large-scale deployment of renewable and low-
carbon technologies.
Within the structure of renewable energy sources, biomass
holds a leading position, dominating in terms of utilization
volumes among other resource types. According to [9], bi-
oenergy accounts for approximately 55% of global renewa-
ble energy production and contributes about 9% to the
global primary energy supply (approximately 56 EJ in 2023),
encompassing the production of heat and electricity as well
as liquid and gaseous biofuels.
A decisive role in this segment is played by woody biomass,
which is characterized by a high content of structural poly-
saccharides – primarily cellulose (38–50% by mass) and
hemicellulose – determining its high reactivity in thermo-
chemical conversion processes. At the same time, its lower
heating value compared to fossil fuels, as well as techno-
logical and logistical constraints associated with the use of
solid biofuels, substantiate the expediency of developing
and improving thermochemical biomass conversion meth-
ods aimed at enhancing the energetic and thermodynamic
efficiency of its utilization.
Among thermochemical biomass conversion technologies,
direct combustion has historically dominated and remains
the primary method of its energy utilization, particularly in
the heat generation sector. At the same time, the global
scale of bioenergy-based electricity generation is signifi-
cant: the installed capacity of bioenergy worldwide is esti-
mated at approximately 150 GW. Direct combustion is ac-
companied by considerable exergy losses, since the
chemical energy of the fuel is predominantly converted into
heat. The efficiency of subsequent heat-to-electricity con-
version is thermodynamically limited, resulting in reduced
electrical efficiency and overall fuel utilization efficiency
[10, 11]. In this context, gasification and pyrolysis are con-
sidered more efficient thermochemical biomass conversion
methods, capable of ensuring a more rational utilization of
its energy and exergy potential [12].
According to data from the European Bioenergy Associa-
tion (EBA), approximately 141 biomass gasification plants
are currently in operation across Europe, while an additio-
nal 54 projects are at various stages of development.
Germany holds a leading position in terms of the number
of operating facilities (61 plants). At the same time, France,
Finland, and Italy demonstrate positive dynamics in ex-
panding the corresponding generating capacities [13].
The market offers modular gasifier-based power plants with
a nominal electrical capacity of 45–50 kW, and manufactur-
ers indicate that the technology is economically feasible for
small-scale installations starting from 5 kWₑ. However, the
scaling-up of conventional gasifier units is traditionally ac-
companied by systemic limitations related to the instability
of synthesis gas composition and the complexity of its effec-
tive cleaning prior to subsequent utilization [14].
A significant limitation of gasification technology is the for-
mation of tar compounds in considerable quantities, which
substantially complicates the use of synthesis gas in modern
gas piston ICEs. The overhaul interval declared by leading
manufacturers (MWM, Jenbacher) of up to 80,000 operating
hours is achievable only under strict compliance with fuel
quality standards: tar and particulate matter content up to
50 mg/m3; alkali metals up to 1 mg/m3; chlorides up to 10
mg/m3; ammonia up to 50 mg/m3; and sulphur compounds
up to 50 mg/m3. Operational practice indicates that ensuring
such parameters for biomass-derived gas is technologically
complex and economically burdensome [15].
To bring the composition of synthesis gas produced in a
gasifier to the required standards, multistage gas cleaning
systems are employed (cyclone separators, scrubbers, Ven-
turi tubes, electrostatic precipitators, and filtration mod-
ules). This leads to increased capital and operating expend-
itures, higher pressure losses in the gas tract, and greater
auxiliary energy consumption, thereby reducing the overall
energy efficiency of the installation [16].
The operation of 50 kW cogeneration modules demon-
strates a reduction in available electrical power and devia-
tions from rated characteristics due to the accumulation of
tar and ash deposits on filter components. Thus, the stabil-
ity of synthesis gas composition represents a key limiting
factor in the scaling-up of conventional gasification tech-
nologies [17].
From a thermodynamic perspective, gasification is a par-
tially oxidative process accompanied by significant losses of
exergy potential due to heat and mass transfer, diffusion
process, and the progression of heterogeneous reactions.
A portion of the energy potential of biomass is consumed
for internal partial oxidation to maintain the temperature
regime in the gasification chamber, thereby reducing the
potential for its subsequent conversion into useful work.
Additional losses occur in gas cleaning systems due to pres-
sure drop and energy dissipation in the form of low-grade
heat [18].
Pyrolysis is a process of thermal decomposition of biomass
in the absence of oxygen, within which no internal partial
oxidation occurs, which is characteristic of gasification. This
ensures a higher level of preservation of the exergy poten-
tial of the initial feedstock. During biomass pyrolysis under
oxygen-free conditions, three main products are formed:
biochar, pyrolysis oil, and pyrolysis gas [19].
364
To maximize the yield of pyrolysis gas, elevated process
temperatures and intensified heating regimes are applied,
promoting secondary thermal cracking reactions of vapor–
gas products and reducing the fraction of condensed prod-
ucts. The process is endothermic in nature and requires
heat input in the range of 0.5–3.0 MJ per kilogram of bio-
mass [20]. Heat consumption is determined by the process
temperature, the heating rate of the biomass, and the spe-
cific design features of the reactor. At temperatures above
450°C, the heating value of the pyrolysis gas can be used to
meet internal thermal demands, thereby offsetting heating
costs and reducing the need for external energy input [20].
From the standpoint of exergy analysis, pyrolysis demon-
strates a higher degree of preservation of the potential for
performing useful work compared to oxidative processes,
since a significant portion of the exergy potential of the
original biomass is concentrated in the solid carbonaceous
residue represented by thermally stable aromatic struc-
tures [21, 22]. The accumulation of energy potential in bio-
char enables its subsequent use either as an energy mate-
rial or as a stable form of long-term carbon sequestration,
thereby enhancing the environmental and thermodynamic
justification of the process [23].
The multiproduct nature of pyrolysis ensures increased
functional flexibility of the energy-technological system:
pyrolysis oil can be utilized as a liquid fuel or as chemical
feedstock, while pyrolysis gas can be used to meet the in-
ternal heat demand of the installation, which allows mini-
mization of external energy input and improves the overall
energy efficiency of the process [24, 25].
Based on the analysis of studies [1–25], it can be stated that
each thermochemical biomass conversion technology (gas-
ification, pyrolysis) has its own technical limitations. In par-
ticular, gasification is oriented toward obtaining a single
target product—synthesis gas—the quality of which must
comply with stringent requirements regarding tar and par-
ticulate content, necessitating the use of complex gas
cleaning systems and increasing operating costs [26, 27]. In
contrast to gasification, pyrolysis provides a differentiated
distribution of the energy potential of biomass among
three pyrolysis products and reduces the probability of tar
compounds entering equipment components. Under com-
parable conditions, the level of exergy preservation in the
pyrolysis process is higher than in gasification, since there
is no partial oxidation of the fuel to maintain the tempera-
ture regime [28].
Therefore, there is a well-founded need to develop a com-
bined installation with electric heating of the pyrolysis
zone. The use of electric heating as a controllable heat
source enables the pyrolysis unit to maintain the required
temperature regime without combusting part of the fuel,
thereby ensuring the stability of the composition and heat-
ing value of the synthesis gas. The integration of electric
heating with the utilization of pyrolysis gas heat for pre-
heating the feedstock will reduce the need for external en-
ergy supply and enhance the overall energy efficiency of
the process.
Problem statement. The aim of this work is to substantiate
the electric heating power of a combined pyrolysis-gasifica-
tion unit with integrated synthesis gas cleaning and enrich-
ment processes as a function of its design and process pa-
rameters. To achieve this aim, the following tasks must be
addressed:
– to perform a comparative analysis of the efficiency of py-
rolysis and gasification technologies;
– to justify the design and process parameters of a com-
bined pyrolysis-gasification unit with integrated synthesis
gas cleaning and enrichment processes;
– to determine the required electric heating power for the
reaction zone, as well as for the synthesis gas cleaning and
enrichment zones;
– to experimentally validate the accuracy and reliability of
the analytical calculations.
Materials and Methods
The object of the study is a combined pyrolysis-gasification
unit with integrated processes of synthesis gas cleaning and
enrichment.
The subject of the study comprises the relationships be-
tween the design and process parameters of the combined
pyrolysis-gasification unit and the required electric heating
power of its reaction zone, as well as the synthesis gas
cleaning and enrichment zones (working zones).
The research hypothesis assumes that by establishing func-
tional relationships between the design and process pa-
rameters of the combined pyrolysis-gasification unit and
the required electric heating power of the working zones, it
is possible to substantiate rational values of electric heating
power. The obtained results will serve as a basis for further
improvement of the design and operating modes of com-
bined pyrolysis-gasification units intended for the thermo-
chemical conversion of biomass into synthetic fuels.
During the study, a number of simplifying assumptions
were adopted. The temperature distribution within the
working zones was assumed to be uniform, without ac-
counting for local hot and cold spots. The heat transfer co-
efficient between the heating element and the fuel was
considered constant, regardless of the combustion or py-
rolysis regime.
For modelling purposes, averaged physicochemical proper-
ties of biomass were used, including moisture content, den-
sity, and heating value. The reaction zone was treated as a
homogeneous volume, without considering the complex
geometry or contact zones with the electric heating ele-
ments. It was assumed that the properties of the heater
materials remained unchanged throughout the experi-
ment, and that external conditions, in particular ambient
temperature and humidity, were constant.
The study was conducted using a pyrolysis-gasification unit
with integrated processes of synthesis gas cleaning and en-
richment (Fig. 1). The installation (Fig. 1) consists of a steel
casing made of grade 45 steel in the form of a seamless hot-
rolled pipe with a wall thickness of 8 mm. For sealing and
365

thermal insulation purposes, the casing is additionally insu-
lated with basalt fibre (16). The thickness of the insulation
layer is 100 mm.
Inside the casing, a dry pyrolysis chamber (1) is concentri-
cally arranged. The pyrolysis chamber is made of 09G2S
steel (0.09% carbon, approximately 2% manganese, less
than 1% silicon). The wall thickness of the chamber is 8 mm.
The design provides for an annular space between the cas-
ing and chamber (1), which is filled with wood biochar (2).
For heating purposes, electric heaters are installed verti-
cally (12) and horizontally (15) within the biochar layer
(quartz tubes with a tungsten spiral inside, model KGT-220-
1300). The unit is equipped with a grate (3), includes an in-
jector (4), a vertical pipe (14), and a bottom section (6). The
injector (4) is installed beneath the grate (3). The unit is
tightly sealed at the top with a lid (5).
The vertical pipe (14) is rigidly mounted to the outer wall of
the pyrolysis chamber (1). Its lower end is connected to the
injector (4), while its upper end extends into the internal
volume of the pyrolysis chamber (1). The connection to the
injector ensures the supply of gaseous products for further
decomposition.
The design (Fig. 1) provides efficient conditions for carrying
out gasification/pyrolysis and integrated processes of syn-
thesis gas cleaning and enrichment from biomass, enabling
its application in the development of decentralized heat and
power supply systems based on gas piston ICEs. The unit
makes it possible to produce tar-free gas from biomass.
For purification of the produced synthesis gas, it is passed
through a charcoal filter heated to a temperature of
1000C, where tar vapours undergo cracking into simple
non-condensable compounds, and water decomposition
into carbon monoxide and hydrogen takes place.
A critical issue with the installation (Fig. 1) is the difficulty
of maintaining a high-temperature regime in the reduction
zone, where thermal and chemical processes of synthesis
gas cleaning and enrichment occur simultaneously. Signifi-
cant energy consumption is also associated with heating
the dry pyrolysis chamber (1). Heating of the pyrolysis
chamber (1) is carried out by electric heaters (12), while the
temperature regime in the reduction zone is maintained by
horizontally installed electric heaters (15).
The installation also includes two hatches (7) for loading
charcoal, a pipe (8) for the withdrawal of produced synthe-
sis gas, and a hatch (11) for kindling the unit and cleaning
ash. A terminal box (13) is provided for connecting the elec-
tric heaters.
In the direct gasification mode, to increase the hydrogen
concentration in the synthesis gas, a water supply tube (9)
is provided. As water flows through the annular channel, it
is heated and then supplied beneath the grate in the form
of steam.
The operating principle of the installation is as follows. At
the initial stage, the unit is filled through two hatches (7)
with crushed charcoal of 5–8 mm particle size. The height
of the charcoal layer must be 10–15 cm above the level of
the electric heaters (12). The next step involves switching
on the electric heaters (12) via the terminal box (13) and
heating the charcoal bed.
Biofuel (in this case, wood pellets) is supplied into the dry
pyrolysis chamber (1). The pellets, produced from hard-
wood (beech, hornbeam, and oak), were prepared in ac-
cordance with the applicable technical standards for
pelletized biofuels. The physicochemical characteristics of
the pellets are as follows: moisture content – 14%; ash con-
tent – 7.26%; volatile matter content – 67.43%; sulphur –
0.11%; lower heating value (LHV) – 15.04 MJ/kg; higher
heating value (HHV) – 17.91 MJ/kg; chlorine content on a
dry basis – 0.085%.
During heating by means of the electric heaters (12), the
charcoal accumulates thermal energy and transfers it to the
walls of the pyrolysis chamber. Under the influence of ex-
ternally supplied heat, the temperature of the pellets
within the chamber volume gradually increases, resulting in
their thermal decomposition. As a result of pyrolytic trans-
formations, volatile pyrolysis compounds and a solid carbo-
naceous residue (biochar) are formed.
The volatile pyrolysis compounds are conveyed through the
vertical pipe (14) beneath the grate (3). To exit the installa-
tion, the volatile pyrolysis products must pass through the
reduction zone, which is heated by electric heaters (15) to
a temperature of 1000C.
In the reduction zone, thermal cracking of high-molecular-
weight hydrocarbons occurs, yielding simpler, combustible
products. Physically and chemically bound water present in
the pyrolysis products participates in the water–gas reac-
tion, leading to the formation of synthesis gas enriched
with carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Subsequently, hydro-
gen interacts with carbon to form methane, while carbon
dioxide in the reduction and enrichment zone is reduced to
carbon monoxide (CO), which increases the heating value
of the produced synthesis gas.
After passing through the reduction zone, the combustible
gases rise through the annular space, cooling down and
transferring part of their heat to the wood biochar and the
dry pyrolysis chamber.
Charcoal is replenished through two hatches (7). The syn-
thesis gas is discharged through the pipe (8). The installa-
tion can operate in two modes: continuous and batch. To
increase the overall efficiency of the unit, it is recom-
mended to install a waste heat recovery boiler down-
stream.
Temperature measurements were carried out using a k-
type thermocouple THA-2388 (T). The operating time of the
installation was measured using a mechanical stopwatch
SOSpr-26-2-000 (accuracy class 2, error ±4 s).
Since the developed installation can operate in a direct gas-
ification mode, it is equipped with an air supply channel
(10) with a nozzle (4). To increase the heating value of the
366

gas during operation in gasifier mode, an annular channel
(9) is provided for supplying steam to the reaction zone. In
the dry pyrolysis mode, pipes (9) and (10) are hermetically
sealed and do not participate in the technological process.

Results and Discussion
The simplest method of obtaining combustible gas from lig-
nocellulosic biomass (pellets) for fuelling internal combus-
tion engines and generating electricity is the production of
synthesis gas in gasifier units [33]. For this purpose,
downdraft gasifiers are commonly used, in which a portion
of the biomass is combusted to establish the required ther-
mal regime. Subsequently, the gaseous products of com-
bustion and thermal decomposition, passing through the
reduction zone, are converted into combustible gas.
However, synthesis gas production has several significant
drawbacks, including a relatively low heating value and in-
creased energy consumption required to sustain the
process, which reduces its overall efficiency. At the same
time, gasifier units are characterized by low sensitivity to
fuel quality and are capable of operating on biomass with
elevated moisture content.
The steam entering the reduction zone participates in reac-
tions leading to the formation of CO and H2, thereby in-
creasing the heating value of the synthesis gas. Neverthe-
less, these reactions are accompanied by additional heat
consumption required for steam heating and for sustaining
endothermic transformations. Water vapor lowers the
temperature in the reduction zone, that may result in cyclic
gasifier operation that requires additional time and energy
for reheating the reduction zone, while the heating value of
the produced gas may fluctuate significantly.
Another method of thermochemical biomass conversion is
pyrolysis—the process of decomposition in the absence of
367

an oxidizing agent. During pyrolysis, high-molecular-weight
biomass components undergo thermal decomposition with
the formation of three main products: non-condensable
gases, pyrolysis liquid, and biochar. The yield of the main
pyrolysis products depends on the type of biomass, the
heating rate, and the temperature regime. To maximize the
yield of pyrolysis liquid, fast pyrolysis is applied, with heat-
ing rates exceeding 50C/min and temperatures of 450–
600C. To predominantly obtain combustible gases, slow or
moderate pyrolysis is employed, with heating rates below
10°C/min at temperatures of 700–900C.
Within the temperature range of 700–900C, the pyrolysis
process may acquire an autothermal character, accompa-
nied by intensive evolution of gaseous products and a re-
duced biochar yield. A major advantage of received gas pro-
duced in a pyrolysis unit is the absence of ballast nitrogen,
which is characteristic of synthesis gas. At the same time,
such gas contains carbon dioxide and a fraction of volatile
non-combustible components, which reduce its heating
value.
Water vapor is also present in the pyrolysis products. Part
of it originates from the initial moisture content of the bio-
mass, while another part is formed as a result of thermal
degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin—the
main structural components of biomass. Water vapor is
characterized by high heat capacity and absorbs a signifi-
cant portion of the supplied heat, thereby adversely affect-
ing the thermal balance of the process. Its presence in gas-
eous and liquid pyrolysis products reduces their heating
values and degrades the overall energy performance of the
unit.
A comparative analysis of pyrolysis and gasification tech-
nologies in terms of energy, technological, and techno-eco-
nomic indicators is carried out to determine their relative
efficiency and feasibility for application in autonomous en-
ergy-technological systems (Table 1).

In order to ensure a correct and methodologically sub-
stantiated direct comparison between gasifier and pyrol-
ysis units, a unified approach to the formation of the
evaluation criteria system (b₁–b₈) and the integral effi-
ciency indicator was applied in this study. Such an
approach makes it possible to transform the techno-eco-
nomic characteristics of processes with different physi-
cal natures into a single dimensionless scale and to en-
sure their comparability within a common methodo-
logical framework.

In establishing the criteria, it was taken into account that
for most industrial pyrolysis units, pyrolysis gas serves as an
internal (secondary) energy carrier and is primarily used to
maintain the thermal balance of the pyrolysis chamber ra-
ther than being considered an independent commercial
product. This fundamentally distinguishes pyrolysis units
from conventional gasifiers, in which synthesis gas consti-
tutes the main target product.
Due to the limited availability and heterogeneity of tech-
nical specifications provided by manufacturers of pyrolysis
equipment, typical specific process characteristics obtained
from generalized literature sources were applied for cer-
tain parameters, followed by their conversion into a unified
calculation format. This ensures methodological con-
sistency of the analysis and enables a correct multicriteria
ranking of the units within a single evaluation model.
Since pyrolysis units in their typical configuration do not
generate electricity, it was assumed that Nₑₗ=0 kW, and cri-
terion b₁ is constant within the sample (1 point) and there-
fore does not influence the ranking.
For conversion to indicators b2–b8, generalized assump-
tions were applied (uniform for the entire sub-sample):
the calculated thermal power of the unit was determined
based on the lower heating value of biomass and the as-
sumed heat recovery efficiency (which differs for various
technological classes);
𝑄 =
𝑚·𝐿𝐻𝑉·
3.6
, (1)
where LHV is the lower heating value of the fuel (assumed
to be 16 MJ/kg);
η is the heat utilization efficiency coefficient (assumed
within the range η=0.6–0.8).
2) the gas production rate of the unit, 𝑉𝑔𝑎𝑠 was estimated
based on the specific yield of synthesis gas:
𝑉𝑔𝑎𝑠 = 0.5
𝑁𝑚3
𝑘𝑔
𝑚, (2)
where 𝑉𝑔𝑎𝑠 – is the production rate of synthesis gas, Nm3/h;
𝑚 – is the fuel mass flow rate, kg/h;
0.5 Nm3/kg – specific yield of synthesis gas per 1 kg of fuel
(dry biomass).
Electricity consumption was determined based on typical
specific energy consumption indicators of auxiliary systems
(conveyors, grinding equipment, drive units, etc.). The as-
sessment was carried out using the installed capacity for in-
ternal needs at a given feedstock throughput, ensuring a
correct comparison of alternative technological solutions.
The specific capital cost of the installation was defined
within the range of typical investment parameters for in-
dustrial equipment of the corresponding technological
class. Such an approach enables comparative ranking
within the studied sample without violating the relative
structure of the criterion or distorting the evaluation logic.
The generalized equation of multiparametric optimization
of the energy-technological system has the following form:
max
𝑥𝜖
𝑏𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙.(𝑥) = ∑ 𝑎𝑖𝑏𝑖(𝑦𝑖(𝑥))𝑛
𝑖=1 , 𝑛 = 8. (3)
where 𝑥 – a set of controlled parameters of the pyrolysis–
gasification unit that determine its techno-economic char-
acteristics. Within the scope of the analysis, x serves as an
argument that defines (forms) the tabulated performance
indicators 𝑦𝑖(𝑥);
– the feasible solution domain defining the set of compa-
rable system configurations:
𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑖𝑛 ≤ 𝑦𝑖(𝑥) ≤ 𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑎𝑥 , 𝑖 = 1, … ,8. (4)
𝑏𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙.(𝑥) – the normalized energy-economic efficiency
indicator of the unit, expressed in a point-based form. It
represents the result of weighted aggregation of partial
score values 𝑏𝑖 according to individual evaluation criteria;
𝑏𝑖(𝑦𝑖) – normalized score values within the interval [1; 10],
obtained from the tabulated values (𝑦𝑖) through linear nor-
malization within the analysed sample.
For indicators whose increase reflects an improvement in
the unit efficiency (electrical and thermal power, gas pro-
duction rate, permissible fuel moisture content), linear nor-
malization based on the principle of monotonic increase is
applied. The score value is determined according to the fol-
lowing relationship:
𝑏𝑖(𝑦𝑖) = 1 + 9
𝑦𝑖−𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑎𝑥 −𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑖𝑛
, 𝑖𝜖{1,2,5, 7}. (5)
where 𝑦𝑖 – actual value of the i-th indicator;
𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑎𝑥 , 𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑖𝑛 – minimum and maximum values of the cor-
responding indicator within the analysed sample.
For indicators whose decrease corresponds to an improve-
ment in the unit efficiency (total and specific fuel consump-
tion, specific capital cost of the unit, and electricity con-
sumption for internal needs), linear normalization based on
the principle of monotonic decrease is applied.
𝑏𝑖(𝑦𝑖) = 1 + 9
𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑎𝑥 −𝑦𝑖
𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑎𝑥 −𝑦𝑖,𝑚𝑖𝑛
, 𝑖𝜖{3,4,6, 8}. (6)
𝑎𝑖 – weighting coefficients of the criteria reflecting their rel-
ative contribution to the overall efficiency. They are deter-
mined in accordance with the evaluation priorities and sat-
isfy the following conditions:
𝑎𝑖0, ∑ 𝑎𝑖 = 1, 𝑛 = 8.𝑛
𝑖=1 (7)
The priority is defined as follows: 𝑎4𝑎7 𝑎8 𝑎6, meaning
that the highest weight is assigned to the minimization of
specific fuel consumption, followed by the unit’s ability to
operate on high-moisture fuel, then the minimization of
electricity consumption for internal needs, and finally the
minimization of the specific capital cost of the unit.
In our case, the vector of tabulated indicators 𝑦𝑖(𝑥) is
given by:
{𝑦
𝑖
(𝑥)}𝑖=1
𝑛 = {𝑁𝑒𝑙(𝑥), 𝑄(𝑥), 𝑚(𝑥), 𝑚𝑠𝑝(𝑥), 𝑉𝑔𝑎𝑠(𝑥), 𝐶𝑠𝑝(𝑥), 𝑊(𝑥), 𝐸𝑎𝑢𝑥(𝑥)}. (8)
𝑏𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙.(𝑥) = 𝑎1𝑏1(𝑁𝑒𝑙(𝑥)) + 𝑎2𝑏2( 𝑄(𝑥)) + 𝑎3𝑏3(𝑚(𝑥)) + 𝑎4𝑏4 ( 𝑚𝑠𝑝(𝑥)) + 𝑎5𝑏5 (𝑉𝑔𝑎𝑠(𝑥)) + 𝑎6𝑏6 (𝐶𝑠𝑝(𝑥)) +
𝑎7𝑏7(𝑊(𝑥)) + 𝑎8𝑏8(𝐸𝑎𝑢𝑥(𝑥)), (9)

𝑚 – fuel consumption rate, kg/h;
𝑚𝑠𝑝 – specific fuel consumption (per unit of useful power),
kg/kW;
𝑉𝑔𝑎𝑠 – gas production rate of the unit, m³/h;
Csp – specific capital cost of the unit, UAH/kW;
W – permissible fuel moisture content, %;
𝐸𝑎𝑢𝑥 – electricity consumption for sustaining the gas gen-
eration process, kW.
b1, b2, b3, b4, b5, b6, b7, b8 – normalized score values corre-
sponding respectively to: electrical power of the unit (kW);
thermal power of the unit (kW); fuel consumption rate

pability of operation with the specified type of feedstock
and moisture content (%); electricity consumption for in-
ternal energy needs of the process (kW).
Relative efficiency coefficient of the unit:
𝐾 = 0.1 + 0.9
(𝑏𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙−𝑏𝑚𝑖𝑛)
(𝑏𝑚𝑎𝑥−𝑏𝑚𝑖𝑛)
(10)
where 𝑏𝑚𝑖𝑛 – the minimum value of the integral indicator
within the analysed sample (corresponding to the least effi-
cient unit among those considered), 𝑏𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 𝑚𝑖𝑛(𝑏𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑗);
𝑏𝑚𝑎𝑥 – the maximum value of the integral indicator (corre-
sponding to the most efficient unit among those consid-
ered), 𝑏𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 𝑚𝑎𝑥(𝑏𝑛𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑗).
Gasifier units are characterized by stable synthesis gas pro-
duction and the ability to use it directly for electricity gen-
eration in cogeneration systems. The technology operates
efficiently in small- and medium-capacity installations (50–
500 kW) and can be relatively easily integrated into the ex-
isting thermal infrastructure of a facility without complex
additional heat exchange solutions. At the same time, the
efficiency of gasification significantly depends on the phys-
icochemical properties of biomass, which necessitates its
preliminary preparation. The main limitations of the tech-
nology include increased tar formation during the gasifica-
tion of certain fuel types, sensitivity of the process to fluc-
tuations in feedstock composition and moisture content,
and the absence of additional by-products that could en-
hance the economic performance of the unit.
Pyrolysis units are capable of processing feedstock with el-
evated moisture content and, in addition to pyrolysis gas,
produce such value-added products as biochar and bio-oil.
Properly organized internal heat utilization (recirculation of
process heat) reduces tar formation, and the system oper-
ation is environmentally safer. However, electricity is not
generated directly from pyrolysis gas. The installation of
such units requires significant capital investment, a more
complex heat-exchange system, and technical solutions for
the utilization or disposal of pyrolysis gas.
The average score values of the evaluation criteria for py-
rolysis and gasification technologies are presented in Fig. 2.

The integration of pyrolysis and gasification processes
within a single unit makes it possible to first perform the
thermal decomposition of biomass and subsequently utilize
the resulting gas either in the gasification chamber or di-
rectly for electricity generation. Such a configuration en-
sures an increase in the overall energy utilization coeffi-
cient up to K=0.9 (Kgas=0.664, Kpyr=0.683) due to internal
heat recuperation, reduction of specific fuel consumption,
and expansion of the permissible feedstock moisture
range. An additional advantage is the production of bio-
char/bio-oil as by-products, which improves the economic
performance of the installation. Theoretically, this creates
conditions for satisfying the inequality Kpyr-gasmax(Kpyr,
Kgas), since the combination of these technologies allows for
reduced specific fuel consumption, lower energy demand
for fuel drying, and rational utilization of heat between in-
dividual process stages.
According to the results of the integral assessment, pyroly-
sis and gasification technologies exhibit similar values of
the generalized efficiency indicator (Fig. 2), although their
techno-economic structures differ. In order to improve the
quality of gas produced during pyrolysis, it is proposed to
combine pyrolysis with the subsequent passage of pyrolysis
gases through a reduction zone, analogous to a gasifier unit
[29]. During passage through the reduction zone, CO2 is re-
duced to CO; thermally unstable organic compounds de-
compose to form simpler combustible components; tar
substances undergo cracking; and water vapor reacts with
heated carbon to form CO and H2, with part of the H2 sub-
sequently reacting with carbon to form CH4.
One of the main drawbacks of such a process is the neces-
sity to maintain a high temperature in the reduction zone,
particularly during the reactions between water vapor and
carbon, which are endothermic and require significant heat
input. A decrease in the temperature of the reaction zone
leads to incomplete progression of these reactions, sub-
stantially deteriorating the composition and heating value
of the gas.
Gas removal from the pyrolysis chamber and from the unit
as a whole occurs by natural draft. The reduction process in
the above-grate zone proceeds under minimal excess pres-
sure, the magnitude of which is determined by the re-
sistance of the charcoal bed to the flow of synthesis gases
formed as a result of thermolysis. Considering the bulk den-
sity of charcoal in the annular space between the casing
and the pyrolysis chamber, this excess pressure only slightly
differs from atmospheric. Therefore, mass and heat trans-
fer processes may reasonably be considered to occur under
conditions close to constant atmospheric pressure. Since
the reaction between water vapor and carbon requires
heat input, the process proceeds at temperatures of 800–
1000C and at a pressure close to atmospheric:
C+H2O(g)⇌ CO+H2+ΔH≈+131 kJ/mol. (11)
Therefore, when calculating the heat balance required for
the water-gas reaction, it is necessary to account for the
heat input for preheating the water vapor and charcoal to
900C, as well as the heat consumption associated with the
chemical reaction itself, since it is endothermic.
It should also be taken into account that a portion of the
carbon monoxide (CO) formed as a result of reaction (1)
may directly react with water vapor, leading to the water-
gas shift reaction:
CO+H2O ⇌ CO2+H2 – ΔH≈-41,2 kJ/mol. (12)
This reaction is exothermic and is accompanied by the re-
lease of 41.2 kJ/mol of heat, resulting in the formation of
carbon dioxide (CO2). In the reduction zone, CO2 reacts with
carbon to form carbon monoxide (CO) according to the
Boudouard reaction, which is endothermic:
C+CO2 ⇌ 2CO+ΔH≈+172 kJ/mol. (13)
Taking into account the course of the chemical process, up
to 50% of Н2О vapor may participate in the formation of
carbon dioxide (CO2). However, when comparing the en-
thalpy of the water-gas reaction C+H2O⇌CO+H2 with the
total enthalpy of the reaction sequence (water-gas shift re-
action CO+H2O⇌CO2+H2 combined with the simultaneous
Boudouard reaction C+CO2⇌2CO), the overall enthalpy
change in both cases is identical and amounts to ΔH≈+131
kJ/mol. Since both transformation pathways provide the
same overall thermal effect and result in an equivalent gas-
phase composition, in subsequent energy calculations, it is
reasonable to determine the heat balance based on the wa-
ter–gas reaction for the total amount of water vapor con-
tained in the pyrolysis products.
Since free hydrogen is formed during passage through the
reduction zone, the presence of carbon may lead to the oc-
currence of the hydrogasification reaction, which is exo-
thermic:
C+2H2 ⇌ CH4 – ΔH≈-74,8 kJ/mol. (14)
The hydrogasification reaction proceeds within the temper-
ature range of 800–1000C. As the temperature increases,
the equilibrium shifts toward methane decomposition into
carbon and hydrogen. Consequently, methane formation
may occur outside the reduction zone, namely in the cool-
ing zone of the pyrolysis products, which simultaneously
provides heating of the dry pyrolysis chamber. Therefore,
in subsequent calculations of the heat required to maintain
the temperature of the reduction zone, the heat released
during the hydrogasification reaction is not included.
The supply of water vapor to the reduction zone is non-uni-
form and is characterized by peak values corresponding to
the progression of physical and chemical processes in the
dry pyrolysis chamber. The first stage is associated with
moisture evaporation from the material undergoing pyrol-
ysis and is determined by the residual physical moisture
content of the wood pellets.
Subsequent calculations were performed for 1 kg of pellets
with a moisture content of 14%. The dry matter consists of
42% cellulose, 31% hemicellulose, 23% lignin, 3% extrac-
tives, and 1% ash.
372

The second stage of water release is associated with the
thermal decomposition of hemicellulose. This process oc-
curs within the temperature range of 220–315C, with the
maximum decomposition rate observed at approximately
290C. As a result of hemicellulose decomposition, water
vapor may be formed in an amount of up to 18% of its initial
mass.
The third stage of water formation corresponds to the de-
composition of cellulose. It occurs within a relatively broad
temperature range of 250–400C, and the amount of water
released may reach up to 18% of the initial mass of cellu-
lose.
The fourth stage of water formation is associated with the
thermal decomposition of lignin. The process occurs within
the temperature range of 200–400C, and the amount of wa-
ter released may reach up to 8% of the initial mass of lignin.
The results of the calculation of the amount of water vapor
formed at individual stages of the thermal decomposition
of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are summarized in
Table 2.

Analysis of the data presented in Table 2 indicates that ap-
proximately 269 g of water vapor is formed during the py-
rolysis of 1 kg of pellets, which corresponds to 27% of the
initial feedstock mass. About 52% of this amount of vapor
is released within the temperature range of 100–130C. A
second pronounced maximum occurs in the range of 290–
310C and accounts for approximately 42% of the total
mass of generated moisture.
The performed analysis demonstrates that the reduction
zone experiences the maximum thermal load during the
evaporation of moisture from the pellets, since it is at this
stage that the largest amount of energy must be supplied
to the zone. At this stage, the water vapor has a tempera-
ture of approximately 100C; therefore, additional heat
must be supplied to raise its temperature to the level at
which the water–gas reaction occurs.
Since the heat capacity of water vapor increases with tem-
perature, in the calculations its value at 1000C is adopted,
namely cₚ=2,32 kJ/(kg·K).
Let us calculate the required amount of heat to compen-
sate for heating the steam to 900C:
𝑄𝑝 = 𝑐𝑝 · 𝑚𝑝 · ∆𝑇, (15)
where ср – specific heat capacity of water vapour, kJ/(kg·K);
mp – mass of water vapor, kg;
∆T – temperature change, С.
At a heating rate of 10C/min, the thermal power is deter-
mined by the following expression:
𝑃𝑝 = 𝑄𝑝/𝑡, (16)
where t – heating time, s.
The amount of heat that must be supplied to the reduction
zone to raise its temperature to 1000С:
𝑄𝑣 = 𝑐𝑣 · 𝑚𝑣 · ∆𝑇, (17)
where Qv – the amount of heat that must be supplied to the
reduction zone to raise its temperature to 1000С, kJ;
cv – specific heat capacity of carbon, kJ/(kg·K);
mv – mass of carbon, kg;
∆T – temperature change, С.
To heat the reduction zone to a temperature of 1000C
within 10 minutes, the required thermal power is:
𝑃𝑣 = 𝑄𝑣/𝑡𝑣 , 18)
where Pv – thermal power required to heat the reduction
zone, W;
tv – heating time, s.
The amount of heat required for the water–gas reaction to
proceed is:
𝑄𝑅 = ∆𝐻° · (𝑚𝐻2𝑂/𝑀𝐻2𝑂), (19)
where QR – the amount of heat required for the water–gas
reaction to proceed, kJ (J);
𝑚𝐻2𝑂 – mass of water, kg;
𝑀𝐻2𝑂 – molar mass of water, kg/mol;
∆𝐻° – enthalpy change of the water–gas reaction, kJ/mol.
The water-gas reaction is characterized by the formation of
CO and H2 in the temperature range of 800–1000C. There-
fore, at the initial stage of steam supply to the reduction
zone, provided that this zone has been preheated to
1000C, there exists a reserve of internal energy stored in
the heated charcoal bed. This reserve can be used to heat
the water vapor and to sustain the water-gas reaction.
Let us assume an allowable decrease in the temperature of
the reduction zone to 820C and calculate the energy re-
serve that can be utilized to drive H₂ formation.
373
𝑄𝑣𝑠 = 𝑐𝑣900 · 𝑚𝑣 · ∆𝑇, (20)
where 𝑄𝑣𝑠 – heat reserve of the reduction reaction zone,
kJ;
𝑐𝑣900 – specific heat capacity of charcoal at the average pro-
cess temperature (≈900C), kJ/(kg·K);
𝑚𝑣 – mass of charcoal in the reduction zone, kg;
∆𝑇 – temperature change, С.
The additional amount of heat that must be supplied to the
reduction zone is determined as the difference between
the total heat required for heating the water vapor and sus-
taining the water-gas reaction, and the available heat re-
serve of the preheated carbon:
𝑄 = 𝑄𝑝 + 𝑄𝑅 − 𝑄𝑣𝑠 , (21)
where 𝑄 – additional heat that must be supplied to the re-
duction zone, kJ;
𝑄𝑝 – heat required to compensate for heating the steam to
900°C, kJ;
𝑄𝑅 – heat required for the water–gas reaction to proceed,
kJ;
𝑄𝑣𝑠 – heat reserve of the reduction reaction zone, kJ.
Since the peak phase of the process lasts approximately 1
minute, the required thermal power to compensate for the
energy demand in the reduction zone is determined by the
following expression:
𝑃 = 𝑄/𝑡, (22)
where Р – thermal power, W;
𝑄 – additional heat that must be supplied to the reduction
zone, kJ;
t – duration of the peak phase of the process, s.
Let us consider the issue of the structural arrangement of
the reduction zone. At temperatures close to 1000C, heat
transfer from the reduction zone to the environment oc-
curs predominantly through thermal radiation. In the ab-
sence of thermal insulation, radiative losses would be sig-
nificant. Therefore, the reduction zone must be insulated
with layers of material having low thermal conductivity.
In the proposed design, a layer of charcoal is used as the
thermal insulation medium. The surface area, determined
from the geometric parameters of the unit, is S=0.138 m2.
The temperature in the reduction zone is assumed to be
approximately 1000C. Electric heaters are uniformly dis-
tributed within the layer.
Based on the thermochemical processes occurring in the
reduction zone, its height is assumed to be 100 mm.
The limiting temperature of the outer surface is assumed to
be no higher than 200–250°C. At this temperature level, the
intensity of thermal radiation from the surface amounts to
approximately 2–3% of that at 1000°C, thereby substan-
tially reducing radiative heat losses.
For a bulk layer of charcoal at elevated temperatures, the
effective thermal conductivity is λ=0,15…0,20 W/(m·K); in
the calculations λ=0,2 W/(m·K).
The average heat flux through the layer is determined as
follows:
𝑞 =
𝑃
2·𝑆
, (23)
q – heat flux density, W/m2;
Р – total power of the electric heaters, W;
S – heat transfer surface area, m2.
Required temperature difference:
∆𝑇 = 𝑇0 − 𝑇𝑆, (24)
where ∆𝑇 – temperature difference, С;
𝑇0 – initial temperature in the reduction zone, С;
𝑇𝑆 – temperature of the charcoal layer, С.
The required thickness of the charcoal layer, according to
Fourier’s law, is:
𝑞 = · ∆𝑇/𝛿, (25)
from which it follows
𝛿𝑏𝑖𝑜𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟 = · ∆𝑇/𝑞, (26)
where 𝛿𝑏𝑖𝑜𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟 — thickness of the charcoal layer, m;
q – heat flux density, W/m2;
λ — thermal conductivity of the charcoal layer, W/(m·K);
∆T – temperature difference, С.
A separate analysis is required for the issue of heat supply
to the pellets located in the dry pyrolysis chamber. Struc-
turally, the dry pyrolysis chamber is a sealed metal cylinder
equipped with a pyrolysis gas outlet tube and installed in-
side the outer casing of the unit, which is also cylindrical in
shape. Between the outer casing and the wall of the dry py-
rolysis chamber, a closed inter-casing space is formed, pro-
vided with an external pipe for gas discharge. In the lower
part of the outer casing, beneath the dry pyrolysis chamber,
the reduction, cleaning, and enrichment zone of the fuel
gas is located. The fuel gases are conveyed through the out-
let tube to the lower section of the outer casing. Thus, in
order to exit the unit, the fuel gas must pass through the
reduction zone, and its movement ensures convective heat
transfer between the reduction zone and the wall of the dry
pyrolysis chamber during the pyrolysis process of the pel-
lets.
The initial heating of the dry pyrolysis chamber is carried
out by KGT-type electric heaters with a rated power of 1300
W each, installed in the inter-casing space between the
outer casing and the chamber wall. This space is filled with
bulk charcoal, which serves as both a heat-accumulating
and insulating layer.
The electric heaters are uniformly arranged along the pe-
rimeter of the chamber casing, forming four equivalent
heating sectors and ensuring a symmetrical distribution of
the heat flux. The volume of the dry pyrolysis chamber al-
lows loading approximately 9 kg of pellets in bulk.
For the purpose of thermal calculations, the following as-
sumptions are adopted: one heated sector is considered as
a flat rectangular wall with a height of 350 mm and a width
of 173 mm. Between the heating element and the metal
374
casing of the dry pyrolysis chamber, there is a 50 mm-thick
layer of charcoal, followed by a metal plate with a thickness
of 8 mm. On the inner side of the wall, there is a 45 mm
thick layer of pellets with a mass of 2.25 kg.
In the calculations, it is assumed that 50% of the electric
heater power is uniformly transferred to the charcoal layer.
Heat transfer from the electric heater, heated to 1000C,
occurs predominantly by radiation over a full 360 solid an-
gle.
Taking into account the heat capacity of the charcoal layer
and the inevitable thermal losses within the structure, it is
further assumed that only half of the installed electric
heater power is effectively utilized for heating the dry py-
rolysis chamber.
For subsequent calculations, it is assumed that the area of
the rectangular wall with a height h=0.35 m and a width
b=0.173 m is SR=0,350,173=0,0606 m2. The thermal con-
ductivity of porous charcoal is λbiochar≈0,2 W/m·K, and that
of steel is – λsteel≈45 W/m·K.
The thermal resistance of the layers is determined accord-
ing to the following mathematical relationship:
𝑅 = 𝛿/, (27)
where δ – is the layer thickness, m;
– is the thermal conductivity of the material, W/(m·K).
For a 50 mm thick charcoal layer with a thermal conductiv-
ity of 0.2 W/(m·K), the thermal resistance is
Rbichar=0,05/0,2≈0,25 m2 K/W. For an 8 mm thick metal wall
with a thermal conductivity of 45 W/(m·K), the thermal re-
sistance is Rsteel=0,008/45≈0,00017 m2 K/W.
The analysis of the obtained values indicates that, in the
considered heat-transfer system, the thermal resistance of
the charcoal layer is dominant, whereas the resistance of
the metal wall is several orders of magnitude smaller and
practically does not affect the overall heat-transfer process.
The density of the actual heat flux is determined by the fol-
lowing relationship:
𝑞′ = (𝑇1 − 𝑇2)/𝑅∑ , (28)
where 𝑞′ – density of the actual heat flux, W/m2;
Т1 – temperature of the inner surface of the heating zone
(temperature of the charcoal layer), C;
Т2 – temperature of the inner surface of the metal wall of
the chamber, C;
RΣ – total thermal resistance of the heat-conducting layers,
m²·K/W.
The total heat flow (power) transferred to the pellets is:
𝑄𝑝𝑒𝑙 = 𝑞 · 𝑆𝑅, (29)
𝑄𝑝𝑒𝑙 – total heat flow transferred to the pellets, W;
𝑆𝑅 – heat transfer area, m2.
The heating rate of the pellets in the dry pyrolysis chamber
is determined by the following formula:
𝑑𝑇
𝑑𝑡
=
𝑄̇𝑝𝑒𝑙
𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑙∙𝑐𝑝𝑒𝑙
(30)
where
𝑑𝑇
𝑑𝑡
– heating rate of pellets in the dry pyrolysis cham-
ber, С/min;
𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑙 – mass of dry pellets in the sector, kg;
𝑐𝑝𝑒𝑙 – specific heat capacity of pellets, kJ/(kg·K).

Thus, to sustain the process, it is sufficient to employ five
electric heaters with a total installed power of 6.5 kW,
which ensures both rapid heating of the reduction zone and
compensation of heat consumption during the water-gas
reaction.
The calculation results (Table 3) indicate that the minimum
required thickness of the thermal insulation layer is 70 mm;
however, taking into account a structural safety margin, a
thickness of 100 mm is adopted and implemented in the
unit design.
In the experimental setup, 8 kg of pellets were loaded into
the dry pyrolysis chamber and heated to a temperature of
280C, with time and temperature being recorded. Based
on the experimental data and the calculated heating rate of
the pellets, temperature profiles of pellet heating in the dry
pyrolysis chamber were constructed (Fig. 3).

Fig. 3. Dependence of pellet temperature in the dry pyrolysis chamber on heating time
The deviation between the experimental and theoretical
data was evaluated using the coefficient of determination R2,
which for the performed calculations amounts to 0.989.
Thus, a high degree of agreement is observed between the
data obtained experimentally and analytically, particularly
within the temperature range of 40–100°C (Fig. 3). Minor de-
viations of the experimental curve from the theoretical one
are attributed to the progression of pyrolysis processes in-
volving volatile components. A portion of the supplied en-
ergy is consumed for their thermal decomposition and phase
transformation with the formation of gaseous products, ra-
ther than for increasing the temperature of the pellets.

for Higher Education", funded by the European Union.
Conclusions:
1. The integral efficiency coefficients of gasification and py-
rolysis are comparable, with Kgas=0.664, а Kpyr=0.683, indi-
cating the absence of a significant advantage of one tech-
nology over the other when applied separately. Owing to
the reduction of specific electricity consumption for inter-
nal needs and the expansion of the permissible fuel mois-
ture range, the development of a combined pyrolysis–gasi-
fication unit is technically justified as an energy-efficient
solution, providing an integral efficiency coefficient at the
level of K=0.9.
2. The reduction zone should have a height of 100 mm,
within which the temperature must be maintained in the
range of 850–1000C. To reduce radiative heat losses, a
layer of wood biochar at least 100 mm thick is provided
above and below the reduction zone. In addition, the study
substantiates and normalizes, per unit mass of fuel, the en-
ergy consumption required for the production of combus-
tible gases from steam originating from both the physical
moisture in the pellets and the water vapor formed as a re-
sult of thermal degradation of their structural components.
3. The conducted research determined the energy con-
sumption associated with the technological processes of
pyrolysis, gas cleaning, and reduction of combustible gases.
It was established that the total electric heating power of
the dry pyrolysis chamber should amount to 6.5 kW (five
electric heaters, rated at 1300 W each). To ensure a uni-
form temperature field, the electric heaters in the central
part of the reduction zone must be arranged symmetrically
and with equal spacing, thereby guaranteeing homogene-
ous heating of the working volume of the dry pyrolysis
chamber.
4. Analysis of the temperature dependence indicates that
pellet heating in the dry pyrolysis chamber proceeds uni-
formly and without sharp temperature fluctuations. The ex-
perimental curve closely follows the calculated one, con-
firming the adequacy of the adopted thermal model. Minor
deviations in certain temperature intervals are associated
with physicochemical processes occurring in the pellets, in
particular, moisture removal and the onset of thermal deg-
radation of organic components. Overall, the obtained re-
sults confirm the correctness of the determined electric
heating power and the effectiveness of the selected dry py-
rolysis chamber design.

The object of the study is the process of thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass in a combined pyrolysis-gasification unit with integrated zones for reduction, cleaning, and enrichment of syn-gas.
