Abstract
For the first time in Ukraine, the invasive aphid species Tinocallis nevskyi is reported for the “Olexandria”
State Dendrological Park, Kyiv region. It was detected on Ulmus parvifolia and U. scabra.

The pale Japanese elm aphid, Tinocallis
(Sappocallis) nevskyi Remaudière, Quednau
& Heie, 1988, belongs to the subfamily
Calaphidinae Oestlund, 1919. This species was
first described by Remaudière et al. (1988), who
distinguished it from T. saltans (Nevsky, 1929)
with which it had previously been confused.
Tinocallis nevskyi originated in Central and
South-West Asia but has spread across much
of Europe. It occurs in central, western, and
northern parts of Europe (Kanturski et al.,
2018). In some European countries, T. nevskyi
is now among the most common aphid species.
Examination of external sources (GBIF, 2025;
iNaturalist, 2025; InfluentialPoints, 2025)
showed that it has not been reported in
Ukraine to date.
We discovered T. nevskyi (Fig. 1) in the
“Olexandria” State Dendrological Park
plantings in June 2025. The identification
of this species was based on morphological
descriptions provided by Kanturski et al.
(2018). The range of its food plants, its
prevalence and abundance in park plantings,
and some features of its seasonal development
were studied. It has been established that
this species inhabits two types of elm trees:
Ulmus parvifolia Jacq. and U. scabra Mill. The
aphid population is very small on both plant
types. This species of aphids is found only in
the eastern part of the arboretum, bordering
urban plantings, where its population is
slightly higher. The damage caused by this
phytophagous insect to elm trees is very
insignificant. Another invasive species of
this genus, T. takachihoensis Higuchi, 1972, is
much more common in park plantings. It is
interesting to note the absence of the local
species T. platani Kaltenbach, 1843, in park
plantings at the same time.

When studying the characteristics of
seasonal development, two forms of winged
viviparous females were identified. The first
form (Fig. 2 A) with less sclerotization of the
body was found in summer and in the first
half of autumn. The second, more sclerotic
form of winged females (Fig. 2 B) appeared
in the fall. Wingless oviparae appeared in
October. Oviposition occurred at the end of
October.
